Everyone feels sad or worried sometimes. One useful way to deal with bad feelings is to make a “calm-down jar”. Here’s how to make and use one.
What you need:
A clean glass jar with a lid, warm water, glitter glue (闪光胶水) or loose glitter (闪光粉) and food colouring (optional)
Steps:
1. Fill the jar almost to the top with warm water.
2. Add two spoons of glitter glue or a spoon of loose glitter.
3. Add a drop of food colouring if you like.
4. Close the lid tightly and shake the jar.
How to use:
When you feel upset, shake the jar and watch the glitter swirl around. Then set it down and watch the glitter slowly fall to the bottom. As you watch, take deep breaths. This helps you calm down and think more clearly.
The calm-down jar is like your feelings—when you are upset, everything is mixed up. But if you wait and breathe, things will settle down.

“On the very first day of 2024, I saw the snows of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa,” said Xu Zhuoyuan, a 17-year-old mountaineer from Hunan.
Xu climbed the tallest peak in Africa on Jan.1st. She even stood on top of Mount Qomolangma last May, making her the youngest Chinese girl to climb to the world’s highest peak from the southern slope.
Xu’s journey began on a trip to Sichuan four years ago. Passing by Mount Siguniang in Sichuan, she felt drawn (吸引) to its beauty and climbed it. She fell in love with mountaineering right then and there. For the next few years, Xu did hard training.
She climbed peaks over 5,000 metres in Yunnan and Sichuan every month. She also did daily exercises like running, swimming and rope skipping. All that hard work got her ready for the big challenges she would face on Kilimanjaro.
Above 4,000 metres on Mount Kilimanjaro, the weather is similar to a desert, with big temperature differences. During her seven-day climb, Xu faced changeable weather such as rain and strong winds. Staying warm and avoiding heat loss were very important. Xu had to keep an eye on the temperature and change her clothes when the temperature changed.
This climb was also a learning experience for Xu. She was climbing with Xia Boyu, the first Chinese climber to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma with a prosthetic (假肢的) leg. “Every time I felt like giving up, just seeing Xia was enough to encourage me. He was almost 74 years old, but was still pushing on although he had bloodied legs from his prosthesis,” Xu said.
Looking ahead, Xu has set great goals for herself. She plans to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents (大陆) and visit the North and South Poles by the time she’s 18.
21. What made Xu fall in love with mountaineering?
A. Her father’s love for mountaineering.
B. A trip to Mount Siguniang in Sichuan.
C. The first Chinese climber Xia’s story.
22. What is the main challenge for Xu in climbing Kilimanjaro?
A. The weather. B. Thick clouds. C. Food problems.

Cooking is fun, but sometimes accidents may happen. If you burn yourself, cut your finger or pour out hot oil carelessly, don’t panic! Here are some things you should do when the accidents happen.
When you get burned by fire, hot oil or steam, cool the burn at once under cold running water for 10~15 minutes. Then cover it with a clean cloth or bandage. Don’t use ice or butter! If the burn is serious, you’d better see a doctor at once. Don’t break the blisters (水泡) or touch them often; this can make the pain worse.
If you are cut by knives or sharp (锋利的) tools, wash the cut with clean water and soap. Press a clean cloth on it to stop bleeding. Then cover it with a bandage. If the cut is deep or won’t stop bleeding, go to the hospital. Don’t use alcohol (酒精) directly on deep cuts or touch them with a dirty hand.
If something in the pan catches fire, turn off the stove at once. Cover the pan with a metal lid (锅盖). Without oxygen (氧气), the fire will go out soon. If the fire becomes bigger or covers other things, leave the kitchen and call 119 as soon as possible. Do remember, don’t pour water on an oil fire or try to carry a burning pan outside.
To stay away from cooking accidents, we must always be careful when using knives or fire. Most cooking accidents are small if we treat them in the right way. Knowing these tips will help us stay safe in the kitchen!
25. What should you do first if you burn yourself with a fire?
A. Go to see a doctor at once.
B. Cool the burn under cold water.
C. Cover it with a clean cloth or bandage.
26. What does the underlined word “them” refer to in the third paragraph?
A. Deep Cuts. B. Knives. C. Fingers.
27. What can stop the burning pan from the passage?
①Water. ②Oxygen. ③Firefighters.
④A metal lid. ⑤Turning off the stove.
A. ①③⑤ B. ②③④ C. ③④⑤
28. What would be the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C.
【答案】25. B 26. A 27. C 28. B

第三节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容填空和回答问题。(第1题至4题每空不超过3个词,第5题需用完整句子回答。)
How do you feel when you have to make a speech in front of class? How do you feel when you go to a birthday party? Do you get really shy?
Shyness means feeling nervous or frightened when you’re around other people. Experts have found that more than 80 percent of middle school students feel afraid to be the center of attention. Some kids are born shy. Some become shy later because of their life experiences.
It’s OK if it takes you a while to feel yourself again when you go to a new place or meet new people. In fact, everybody gets a little shy sometimes. It’s just a case of how much.
Most people have red faces and talk in broken sentences when they get shy. But some become so shy that they won’t go to a restaurant because they are too nervous to order and pay the bill. Some are afraid of meeting new people, so they seldom go outside. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person.
If shyness doesn’t stop you from doing something you want to do, being shy isn’t a very big problem. Some experts say shy people are quieter and cleverer because they think more and talk less. Shy people are also good at working with others because they think more for other people. Some great people in history were shy, too.
You see, being shy isn’t all bad. But remember not to let good chances pass by just because of it! If you have to sing a song at a birthday party or practise your spoken English in front of others, just do it! There’s nothing to be afraid of.

【34题详解】
第二段明确给出害羞的定义“Shyness means feeling nervous or frightened when you’re around other people”,因此答案是原文直接信息,害羞意味着感到紧张或害怕。
【35题详解】
表格中“Causes (原因)”部分,第二段提到“Some kids are born shy. Some become shy later because of their life experiences”,其中“born shy”是害羞的原因之一,与“To be the center of attention”和“To have life experiences”并列,故填be born shy。

表格中该栏下列举的内容“To have red faces”、“To talk in broken sentences”以及“To be afraid of meeting new people”均属于害羞的负面影响,第四段也指出“This kind of shyness can be bad for a person”,因此填Bad effects,与右栏“Good effects”形成对比。

17. What is the main purpose of making a calm-down jar?
A. To decorate your room. B. To help you calm down. C. To store small toys.
18. Which of the following is NOT mentioned to make the jar?
A. A small notebook. B. Warm water. C. Glitter glue.
19. What should you do after shaking the jar?
A. Shake it again quickly.
B. Open the lid and drink the water.
C. Watch the glitter and breathe deeply.
20. What does the writer compare the swirling glitter (旋流闪粉) to?
A. Happy moments. B. Mixed-up feelings. C. Falling rain.

23. Which word can best describe Xu Zhuoyuan?
A. Honest. B. Helpful. C. Brave.
24. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Xia Boyu Tops Mount Qomolangma
B. Mountaineering Draws More Young Climbers
C. A 17-year-old Girl Keeps Climbing the Highest Peaks

A. Go to see a doctor at once.
B. Cool the burn under cold water.
C. Cover it with a clean cloth or bandage.

A. Deep Cuts. B. Knives. C. Fingers.
27. What can stop the burning pan from the passage?
①Water. ②Oxygen. ③Firefighters.
④A metal lid. ⑤Turning off the stove.
A. ①③⑤ B. ②③④ C. ③④⑤
28. What would be the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C.
