I lost my phone when I was on holiday four months ago. With no phone to use on my way
back to Milan,I decided to buy a book at the airport before boarding the plane. There was a discount
on Stephen Hawking's Brief Answers to the Big Questions, and while not necessarily an easy read
for the non-reader I was at the time,it touched on some of the subjects I'm most passionate about so
I decided it was worth the f5.99.I paid for it To my great surprise,I read the whole book on that
two-hour return flight-and so my love for reading began.I was confused. Before then,I used to
buy books fairly often, hoping I'd read them, knowing months would go by and I wouldn't even
open them.So I wondered.What was different this time?After carefully analyzing the situation,I
came up with an explanation.
Now I realize, most books on my reading list as a child came from one of three places:
suggested books,school books,and "to read before you die"books.As a kid,I didn't have much
experience when it came to books or reading. So when I decided to pick up a book,I thought these
were the ones I should read and I believed I would surely enjoy them. Then I ended up thinking of
myself as someone that simply didn't like reading.
It is obvious,in hindsight(在事后看来),that I actually really enjoyed reading. The few times
I got to skim through a book that felt right,I would devour the whole thing in a matter of hours.
Many people approach reading in the wrong way,so they finally end up disliking it the way I
did.Keep on reading books you don't like, and you'll eventually convince yourself it is reading you
don't like.So just make sure, you are reading books that touch on subjects you are actually
passionate about-don't be scared to create your unique bookshelf.

Have you ever had the flu ()If yes,you may remember coughing, tiredness, and body
aches.Other animals get the flu too-it's caused by a virus ()Many flu virus types infect
different animals,and sometimes a virus can "jump"between species,called spillover.This happens
because viruses change their genetic code (RNA)via mutations ()they get mutations when
copying themselves,or by exchanging RNA with other flu viruses in the same infected animal.
Tracking virus spread matters to stop outbreaks.Scientists compare viral RNA to make a
"family tree"-closely related viruses sit near each other and share a source, while distant ones
come from different places. In early 2024,U.S.dairy farmers noticed strange symptoms in cows:
flu-like discomfort, thick yellow milk, and some even stopped producing milk. This worried experts,
as bird flu had already spilled over to wild mammals like cats, foxes, and seals-so they set out to
check if it had reached cows and how it spread.
They studied 9 farms, collecting over 300 cow samples (and testing dead wild animals
found there.Lab work confirmed (bird flu. They measured virus levels by extracting RNA,
checked how long cows made infectious virus(testing samples 3,16,31days later),and analyzed
析data to trace spread.
Results showed sick cows'milk had the highest virus levels.Virus RNA lasted 31days,but it
wasn't infectious after day 3.The cow virus had unique mutations, different from known bird flu
strains.Healthy-looking cows also carried the virus, spreading it to other farms. Some farm animals
and cats were infected too-likely from drinking milk from sick cows.
This is the first time bird flu was seen spreading between mammals, like from cow to cow.If it
mutates further to target mammals,it could reach humans.Human expansion building farms,
towns, and cities into wild areas-makes it easier for diseases like bird flu to jump between species.
But there's good news:pasteurizing milk kills the virus, and teamwork between farmers, vets,
and researchers can slow or stop spread.
51.In writing Paragraph 1,the author aims to
A.make a comparison
B.reach a conclusion
C.present an argument
D.introduce a topic

B.They needed to collect enough RNA to build a family tree.
C.They were studying how the virus's infectiousness changed over time.
D.They wanted to see how long the virus could survive in the environment.
53.What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A.The results of the study on the bird flu virus in cows.
B.The methods used by scientists to study the bird flu virus in cows.
C.The impact of the bird flu virus on different farm animals and cats.
D.The reasons why healthy-looking cows carried the virus.
54.What conclusion can be drawn from Paragraph 5?
A.The threat is new and serious;however,it can be managed.
B.The primary solution is to stop drinking milk to avoid infection.
C.Human expansion into wild areas is the only reason why bird flu spreads.
D.This cow virus will finally change and make many people sick around the world.
55.What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Using Genetic Trees to Track Virus Spread in Farms
B.The Growing Threat of Bird Flu to Human Health
C.How Milk Pasteurization keeps Our Food Safe
D.Bird Flu Spillover in Dairy Cows
