Top New Year's Eve Celebrations
Chime in the New Year with festivities both large and small around the world on this动地) slipped it into my pocket. But that one day of hiding turned into a week, which turned into a month, which became years 25 of them to be exact. I spent the next two decades keeping my limb(四肢) difference hidden at all times.
Interestingly enough, it was a friendship that convinced me to stop hiding my limb difference. When I was 38 years old, tired of hiding and so lonely, I met someone special, who became my life-long friend. My feeling ready to unhide and her willingness to go through the unhiding process with me was exactly what I needed. For the first time in my life, I allowed someone to really hold my limb, look at it, take pictures of it, and touch it. Although we' re living in separate cities now and don't meet as often as before, I've kept the self-love I learned from this friendship. From then on,I've seen limb difference as something unique and beautiful about me, something that should be shown, not hidden.
Last year, I also wrote a book, Singlehandedly: Learning to Unhide and Embrace Connection. It focuses on my journey of hiding and learning to unhide, and the need for disability to be included in diversity conversations. Now, I'm building a global movement and community about unhiding.
24. What do you think of the writer's childhood?
A. Very terrible. B. Seemingly normal.
C. Unexpectedly successful. D. Quite challenging.

A. The support from the writer's parents.
B. The writer's self-awareness of changing.

D. The ignorance of the writer's own limb difference.

A. To express sympathy to the disabled.
B. To recommend a book about unhiding.
C. To share one personal growth experience.

Earlier this month, Bob Dylan released“The Philosophy of Modern Song”, a bright, surrealist(现实主义) collection of 66 songs, detailing their importance and, on occasion, explaining what a given track might mean or do. The book reminded me of the liner notes to Harry Smith's“Anthology of American Folk Music”, in which Smith intelligently summarizes each song’ s narration as if it were a newspaper headline. Dylan is less direct and more tends to allegorical(讽喻的) long speeches.
Dylan has always had a somewhat tense relationship with the writers and journalists who grammatically analyze his songs for meaning, and, while reading“The Philosophy of ModernSong”, there were moments when I grew slightly red-faced, worried that the book might be an intentional joke, making fun of all the critics who have gone thrilled trying to illustrate the greatness and beauty of his work. Yet the pattern and rhythm of his descriptions will be quite familiar to anyone who listened to“Theme Time Radio Hour”, the Sirius XM show that Dylan hosted from2006 to 2009. Ultimately, both projects repeat, in a serious way, just how difficult it is to study, investigate, and evaluate something as indescribable and brain-scrambling as popular music.
“The Philosophy of Modern Song” was to select a limited number of songs—— for Dylan to define the masterpieces that defined him—— and he did so without ambiguity. Much like Smith’ s“Anthology”, Dylan’ s book is deeply personal, despite its sweeping title. It’ s obvious that Dylan did not adjust his preferences to suit a cultural narrative or to minimize his age.
Yet that the book contains only four songs performed by women—— let that sink in!—— is both depressing and astonishing. This might lead readers to question Dylan’ s character and, more worrying, to wonder about the limits of his musical knowledge.
28. What style is Bob Dylan’ s book according to paragraph 1?
A. Realistic and descriptive. B. Brief and straightforward.
C. Detailed and metaphorical. D. Philosophical and instructive.
29. Why did the author feel slightly red-faced?
A. Because he was laughed at by Bob Dylan.
B. Because he was on bad terms with Bob Dylan.
C. Because he failed to listen to Bob Dylan's radio program.
D. Because he may have made praising comments on Bob Dylan's music.
30. What do we know about the book“The Philosophy of Modern Song”?
A. It presents a whole history of American folk music.
B. It shows a clear-cut attitude towards women's folk music.
C. It offers a review on Bob Dylan's personal music albums.
D. It follows the example of“Anthology of American Folk Music”
31. What is the author's attitude towards Bob Dylan's book?
A. Favorable. B. Indifferent. C. Objective. D. Negative

When I lectured Lao Zi at universities in the West, one of the most difficult things was to explain the concept of Dao to my students, given its ubiquitous and yet invisible nature. However, it may not be that difficult if we can relate it to some of the fundamentals in modern physics.
Lao Zi assumed:“All things in the cosmos are generated from being and being arises from non-being; Dao produces one, one produces two, two produce three and three produce everything on earth”. Stephen Hawking has theorized that time began with the Big Bang, originating from nothing. According to the theory of modern quantum cosmology (量子宇宙学), the observable universe is in that empty space where energy is at its lowest state, defined as a“constant quantity”.
Also, Lao Zi said,“All things under heaven are controlled by Dao, in the same way as all streams and torrents flow to rivers and seas”. By gathering in the sea, all rivers actually make a“field of Dao”, where energy at high levels will naturally fill the void (lowest state), which is very much like a vacuum cavity(真空场) in modern quantum field theory. This vacuum is actually full of passing virtual particle (粒子) pairs. These particles are hardly detectable even with the most delicate instruments, according to the“uncertainty principle” proposed by Heisenberg.
In this way, the“something” and“all things in the cosmos” described by Lao Zi can also be seen as equivalent(等价物) to physical particles in modern physics.“Dao produces one” is actually little more than climbing transformation, symbolized by“two” and“three” as materialized structures at more complex levels. Lao Zi's natural cosmology happens to hold the same view as the fundamental
summary of the origin of the cosmos described by modern cosmology and physics. On 1st February2003, NASA announced that the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) had found that most materials detected had so far been“dark” or“vacuum” energy, which further strengthens the scientific foundation for convincing interpretations of the ideas of Dao and Wu in Daoist philosophy.
32. Which of the following is closest to the meaning of the underlined word“ubiquitous”?
A. Available anytime. B. Constantly encountered.
C. Everywhere at once. D. Hardly understood
33. Which is the rhetorical device the author uses in paragraph 3?
A. Simile. B. Personification. C. Repetition. D. Metaphor.
34. What is the purpose of NASA's announcement in the last paragraph?
A. To exhibit the achievement of humans’ space exploration.
B. To prove Lao Zi’ s earliest discovery of physical particles.
C. To present evidence of the link between Dao and modern physics.
D. To argue against Lao Zi’ s Daoism with the latest scientific development.
35. What can be a suitable title for this passage?
A. Dao and Physics.
B. Lao Zi and Stephen Hawking.
C. Interpretations of Quantum Cosmology.
D. The Uncertainty Principle by Heisenberg.

The Beatles are back! When Paul McCartney told the BBC about the band new song made with the help of AI.“Kind of scary but exciting,” he said of reuniting his undead band once more.“Because it's the future.” Each of the applications of AI involves varying degrees of creative and mechanical intervention. Which ones you consider“kind of scary” and which ones“exciting”depends on what you mean by music.“People listen to Taylor Swift partly because of her music, but it's a lot to do with personality and celebrity and connection to the artist and all that stuff.” says Stephen Phillips of the AI music company Splash. That's the stuff AI can't replace yet. Splash already has the technology to have a crack at anything. John Lennon and Taylor Swift together at last? Let them at it, as soon as those artists’ respective IP holders agree to rent their data sets to train the machine.
This is the negotiation that industry players are waiting to have. Beautiful Life, recorded by the songwriting lecturer Greg Arnold, is an AI cooperation composed in the style of his own band.ChatGPT generated lyrics, chords, genre and tempo cues in seconds.“For the bridge,” it thoughtfully suggested,“the melody could build up to higher pitch to signify the rise above adversity.” Imagine an intelligence hungry enough for such structural wisdom to devour(如饥似渴地读) every tutorial ever committed to YouTube. Imagine it processing 100 years of methodology and philosophy. There are thousands of more academic resources out there, of course.
So, where is AI leading music in our lifetime? We’ re not sure of that future, but it seems that even in a world where music is everywhere, by everyone who cares to make it, with whatever tools and data they choose, there is zero chance of machines storming into your local to put an end to music in its essential form: it's an exchange of human frailties(脆弱). When you' re sitting in a room with some musicians, they bare their soul to you, that's a kind of magic. There's no empathy (共情)exchange with an AI. You don't see yourself in another when you' re interacting with an AI. That's the kind of magic that an AI can't copy.
36. What can be inferred from the 1st paragraph?
A. AI is sure to replace the natural intelligence musicians.
B. The music industry has a love-hate relationship with AI.
C. Splash successfully got the Beatles and Taylor Swift perform together.
D. Fans will love a singer for his/ her personality rather than music itself.
37.Why is Beautiful Life mentioned in the 2ⁿᵈ paragraph?
A. To recommend an APP for composing music.
B. To illustrate the strengths of AI in creating music.
C. To describe how an AI-generated song is produced.
D. To show AI's great potential as a replacement of humans.
38. Where does the author think AI is leading music in our lifetime?
A. QQ music with AI-generated sound tracks.
B. A market with lots of poor quality tracks to cash the AI technology.
C. A co-existence of human and AI music generators.
D. A circle of studios and stadiums and MTVs and charts and award shows.
39. Which of the following can best summarize the passage?
A. AI will not replace Taylor Swift!
B. I wanna be software, upload my mind!
C. It's not humans but music that AI threatens!
D. AI-generated musics are no worse than human-generated ones!
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Things You Learned Late Because You Were Robbed(抢夺) Of A Childhood
Journey through adulthood can feel like a crash course in“catch-up” if you were robbed of a normal childhood. Maybe you had to grow up too soon or responsibilities were piled on you before you were ready. Whatever the reason, learning things late is a shared experience for many. Here are some you might have learned well after others, and that's okay. 40
1. How to express emotions in a healthy way.
41 Expressing how you feel was probably low on your list of priorities, or maybe you were told it wasn't important. As an adult, finding the right words and courage to express yourself can be frightening. However, it's crucial for emotional health. It takes time, but recognizing your emotions and expressing them is worth the effort. Once you start understanding your emotions, you realize how instrumental they are in shaping your reality. Emotions guide decisions, influence relationships, and impact your overall well-being.
2. How to settle conflict effectively.
If your childhood was filled with conflict, you might have earned to avoid it at all costs. You might have grown up believing that conflict leads to messes rather than solutions. As an adult, you come to realize that conflict, when handled properly, can be constructive. Actually, effective conflict solutions can strengthen relationships, which involves understanding differing perspectives and requires patience, empathy, and the willingness to listen actively. 42
3. 43
Growing up, you might have been led to believe that perfection was the only way to be accepted. This mindset can be exhausting and harmful, leading to a constant fear of failure. As you mature, you learn that perfection is an illusion (幻觉). Accepting imperfection involves embracing your humanity and letting go of unattainable standards. This realization can be freeing, providing space for self-compassion and genuine growth. By accepting imperfection, you open yourself up to learning and growing at your own pace. This acceptance allows you to appreciate your efforts and achievements without the burden of unrealistic expectations.
4. How to be vulnerable (脆弱的).
For those who didn't have a safe space growing up, vulnerability might seem terrifying. You might have learned to defend yourself against hurt or disappointment. In adulthood, you discover that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness. Embracing vulnerability involves opening up and being honest with yourself and others. It's about sharing your true self, not just the polished version.Though it might feel risky, vulnerability boosts trust and empathy in relationships. 44 By embracing vulnerability, you allow for personal growth and meaningful connections.
A How to recognize who you really are.
B. How to accept your limitations and imperfections.
C. Everyone's journey is different, and catching up is part of the process.
D. This journey of self-discovery can be transformative, both personally and professionally.
E. It helps you build a supportive network where you feel accepted and valued for who you are.
F. As you practice these skills, you begin to see it as an opportunity for growth rather than a threat.
G Growing up, you may have learned to bottle up your feelings to deal with messes or to keep the peace.
