War & Peace
A good soldier is not violent. A good fighter is not angry. A good winner is not vengeful.
There never was a good war or a bad peace.
The supreme art of war is to beat the enemy without fighting.
You cannot prevent and prepare for war at the same time.
The D-Day Landings
The Normandy Landings were a seaborne invasion of northern France that took place on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 by American, British and Canadian forces. The largest seaborne invasion in history was code-named “ Operation Overlord”, but it is more often referred to as “D-Day”. It enabled the liberation of France from German occupation, laying the foundations for the defeat of the German armies on the Western Front.

The 70th anniversary of D-Day Landings
Seventy years later, men who had fought on D-Day gathered on both sides of the English Channel, where people were coming together for memorial ceremonies. As part of this solemn and moving occasion, a former soldier read out to the crowd these lines from the poem For the Fallen, by Laurence Binyon:
10
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
"For the Fallen“
--Laurence Binyon
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.
But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;
As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.
The everlasting memory of the soldiers` brave actions
Although the survivors of the D-Day landings are fewer in number, their outstanding acts of courage mean that we will always remember them-as well as those who lost their lives on the beaches of northern France.
