At 20,I was a lifeguard and swimming teacher at the council pool in
Cambridge.I told the club coach about my dream of swimming the Channel
吉利海映).She looked me over and said,Find another dream.”
Her words hurt me deeply.I wasn't built for long-distance open-water
swims.To swim distances,you need a degree of body fat density,buoyancy (
and power.I had none of this.I realised the coach was probably right, and I let
my dream fade away. But what I couldn't have known was what would take its
place, and how rewarding it would be.
One day,I was asked to teach adults who wanted to learn swimming but
had a terrible fear of water. My first students were between 23 and 79 years old.
Flora, the oldest, had never had time to swim;others still held on to the pain
from childhood accidents or moments of shame.
It requires real courage to share those fears and even more to undress and
step into the pool. For this reason, there were no spectators.During those
evening sessions, the pool was silent and still, and the building transformed into
a peaceful temple.
By week three, they were waist-deep in the shallow end, holding floats as they
walked for 10 meters to the other side. The last one to leave was Raj,who was much
bigger than me and was terrified of the exercise most.By the seventh week,he was
swimming, grasping the float, kicking the water hard with his legs.I loved these sessions.
Watching them overcome a deep-rooted fear was deeply pleasing.
By summer,we moved to an outdoor pool surrounded by trees. The cold

water shocked them, but soon they realised they were out of the indoor pool's
calm and safety. They were doing what they'd never imagined, and it was
glorious. What it took my class to overcome something so challenging-the
hard work and willpower-stayed with me for the rest of my life.None of them
were ever going to swim the Channel, but of course,I never told them that. But
it no longer mattered.I had discovered that helping someone cross their own
private ocean of fear was a triumph far greater than any Channel swim.
56.Why did the author give up his dream of swimming the Channel?
A.He failed to get professional guidance.
B.He lacked the required physical qualities.
C.He found a more rewarding alternative.
D.He got injured in an open-water swim.

A.Smooth and efficient.
B.Competitive and goal-driven.

A.Deep friendship with his students.

In a groundbreaking new study, researchers discovered bottled water sold
in stores can contain 10 to 100 times more bits of plastic than previously
estimated一nanoplastics(纳米塑料)ares0 tiny that they cannot be seen under
a microscope.
Nanoplastics are just 1/1000th the width of an average human hair so
tiny that experts say they can migrate through the tissues of the digestive tract
(or lungs into the bloodstream, distributing potentially harmful
artificial chemieals throughout the body and into cells.
One liter of water-equal to two standard-size bottled waters-contained an
average of 20,000 plastic particles (from seven types of plastics,of which%
were identified as nanoplastics and the rest were microplastics, according to the new
study.

Microplastics are polymer fragments that can range from less than 0.2 inch
(5 millimeters)down to 1/20000th of an inch (1 micrometer).Anything smaller
is a nanoplastic that must be measured in billionths of a meter.
In the new study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the
National Academny of Sciences, researchers from Columbia University presented
a new technology that can see, count and analyze the chemical structure of
nanoparticles in bettled water.
Instead-of 300 per liter, the team behind the latest study found the actual
number of plastic bits in three popular brands of water sold in the United States
to be in between 110,000 and 370,000,not higher.
"The innovative techniques presented in the study open the door for further
research to better understand the potential risks to human health."said Jane
Houlihan,research director for Healthy Babies,Bright Futures-a nonprofit
committed to reducing babies'exposures to neurotoxic(毒害神经的)chemicals,
who was not involved in the study.
"Infants and young children may face the greatest risks,as their developing
brains and bodies are often more yulnerable to impacts from toxic exposures,"
said Houlihan in an email.
Nanoplastics are the most worrisome type of plastic pollution for human health,
experts say. That's because the particles can invade individual cells and tissues in major
organs, pctentially interrupting cellular processes and depositing harmful chemicals
such as bisphenols,phthalates,PFAS,and heavy metals.
There are things people can do to reduce their exposure to plastics, said
Houlihan."We can avoid consuming foods and drinks in plastic containers. We
can wear clothing made from natural fabrics and buy consumer products made
from natural materials,"Houlihan said."We can simply assess the plastic in our
daily lives and find alternatives whenever possible."
61.Where can nanoplastics be found in our body?
A.Almost everywhere.B.The lung.C.The stomach.
D.The blood.
62.What are the differences between nanoplastics and microplastics?
A.Nanoplastics are harmful,while microplastics aren't.
B.Nanoplastics can migrate through certain tissues, while microplastics can't.
C.Nanoplastics are relatively bigger, while microplastics are much smaller.
D.Nanoplastics exist in bottled water,while microplastics don't.
13.Why is Jane Houlihan's statement mentioned in paragraph 7?
A.To add more background information for the new study.
B.To provide an objective evaluation of the new study.
C.To provide evidence for the discussion of plastic hazard.
D.To encourage readers to focus on the new study
04.What is the meaning of the underlined word "yulnerable"in paragraph 8?

I watch documentaries,not movies.I read history books,not fiction.I use
every free moment to accomplish one of the tasks on my never-ending checklist,
and I am completely filled with thoughts of productivity. An hour sleeping is an
hour wasted. And like the rest of 21st century America,I like it.But this fixation
(on productivity is increasingly destroying character and transforming
men into robots.
New York Times columnist David Brooks warned American University
students of this cultural decline in a speech."We cut off all things spiritual and
emotional in a competitive urge to stand out",he said,"The pressure to succeed
professionally,to acquire skills,to do the things you need to do to succeed in.an
information age economy really became the overwhelming(难以应苻的)
pressure, and it sort of eclipses the thinking about character aud morality."
Many students happily go to-college,viewing it as a next step on their rise to
professional achievement.Forcing as many success-building activities into their
schedules as they can, they enjoy keeping busy with little sleep."Today's
outstanding kids are likely to spend their afternoons and weekends shuttling
from one skill-improving activity to the next,"Brooks wrote in an article,"We
fear failure more than we desire success."
A century ago, college was about character building.Today, our characters
are in decline. We are experts on economics, material things and professional
skills. We fail to discuss and understand relationships, emotions and all things
spiritual.Philosophers Karl Popper divided the world into two categories:
Clocks and Clouds.Clock problems are those that can be taken apart, examined
and solved through deductive reasoning(演绎推理).Clouds cannot be taken
apart.Cloud problems represent whole systems that need to be understood in a
different way.
"When we have a Cloud problem,we try to turn into a Clock problem,"
Brooks said.And in a reason-centered culture,adding titles to one's resume
becomes a trend. At American University,85 percent of seniors (and 89 percent
of business majors)graduate with at least one practical experience which is
often helpful to a student's future career, but can sometimes draw focus away
from academics.
To prevent the death of man's character,Brooks urges rediscovering our
human matures through falling in love. And by love he means love for a task, job,
or another person.“Synchronicity(同步性)is key to happiness,.”he said.Rather

I was in a shopping mall recently,so I decided to go and get a cup of tea.As I
was making my way to the coffee shop,I noticed an older gentleman rather
poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby.I knew from first sight that he was in
need of some kind ot reln.He uad a little lunch stretched out in front of him and
was wnoleneartediy cnjoymg it.It was also rather evident that he had a problem
with his right eye and probably couldn't see out of it.I then joined the line and
waited to be served.
Then it happened. One of the most beautiful gestures I have ever seen in my life
There was a young man in front of me in the line who was also waiting to be
served. Then the young man handed the server a twenty-dollar bill and
requested an orange juice,as well as a favour. The server looked at the young
man a little perplexed, not fully understanding the request. That was when the
young man asked her to give the juice to the older gentleman eating his lunch
outside on the bench,as well as the chauge from the girl except her tip.The
young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she
would be completely safe at all times.Subsequently, there was a wonderful
exchange between the server and the older man in need of some attention.I only
wish I had a photo of the smiles on both of their faces.
As I was pondering this event later on,I wondered to myself why the young
man didn't just perform this act of kindness himself.I suspect that deep down in
his heart he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to lo
something for this older man as well.Absolutely beautiful!
There are many ways of thinking when we encounter someone like this older
gentleman,in need of kindness and attention.Perhaps he's just simply lazy and didn't
work hard enough in his life.Or he should have gone to school and made more of
himself,But just maybe he needs a little helping hand.Thank God for this young man
who inspired the others to goodness as well.Oh,by the way,the last words this young
man told the server was,"There go I,but by the Grace of God,"
81.What did the writer notice about the older gentleman when going to the
coffee shop?(no more than 20 words)
82.What does the underlined word"perplexed"in Paragraph 3 probably

eyes?(no more than 10 words)
