Caves, made by nature or by people, can be found all over the world. Some of them are special because of their history or the stories behind them. Here are three famous examples.
Mogao Caves
The Mogao Caves are near Dunhuang on the old Silk Road. They were built in the 4th century. The caves were a shelter for travelers and gave monks a quiet place to meditate (冥想). Artists painted colorful pictures on the walls, showing both religious and daily life scenes. In 1907, a Daoist named Wang Yuanlu showed a British researcher a small “library cave” with more than 50,000 documents in multiple languages.
Grotto of Massabielle
This small cave in Lourdes, France, became famous in 1858. A 14-year-old girl named Bernadette said she saw a goddess in her dreams. She guided Bernadette to dig a small hole there, and a spring of water came out. People believed it could cure the sick. Later, a statue of the goddess was placed in the cave, and many visitors came flooding every year to pray for good health. A film about her life, The Song of Bernadette, became an international success, earning actress Jennifer Jones an Oscar.
Lascaux Cave
In 1940, four boys in France found a cave when their dog ran inside. On the walls, they saw hundreds of paintings and engravings, mostly of animals, such as bulls and horses. Experts believe the drawings were part of religious life, not just for decoration. Too many visitors damaged the paintings, so the cave was closed in 1963. A copy of it, called Lascaux II, was built and opened to visitors in 1983, and it remains popular now.
21. What were the Mogao Caves used for?
A. Goods trade. B. Art and research. C. Language study. D. Rest and meditation.
22. What can we learn about the Grotto of Massabelle?
A. It was built by Bernadette’s family. B. It was famous for its healing spring.
C. It was found by travelers accidentally. D. It was filled with animal paintings inside.
23. Why was the Lascaux Cave closed in 1963?
A. Its decorations needed updating. B. It was reserved for religious use.
C. Too many visitors harmed the art. D. A copy of it became more popular.

Callie Clemens was close to falling asleep when an emergency message on the Facebook page she runs caught her eye. A tiny black dog had been seen crossing a road. Whimpers (呜咽声) had been heard from inside a nearby storm drain (下水道), so there was likely another dog — maybe more than one — caught there.
Clemens got out of bed and drove to the scene. Once there, she took a flashlight, pulled a metal grate (格栅) off the drain and climbed down. After lowering herself down the drain, Clemens went through about 10 feet of a narrow tunnel (管道) before reaching an area where she could search.
She pointed her flashlight at the dark place and saw two sets of eyes. Then the dogs ran off. Around midnight, volunteers arrived and joined Clemens. They worked until 3 a.m. trying to track the dogs. Although they were not able to find the two dogs that Clemens had seen, they did find a female black dog outside. There were at least two more caught below.
Clemens was not about to give up. She went home for a few hours of sleep and then back to the scene, joined by several volunteers. They finally found a tiny white dog. That left one dog underground. Clemens climbed down the storm drain several more times. But the fact that she found an exit hole and had stopped hearing the dog’s whimpers made her confident that it had found its way out.
This was not Clemens’s first time to get into a storm drain. Clemens is known in the Houston area for her rescue (营救) efforts. Over the past nine years, she’s saved at least 100 animals. Clemens’s act doesn’t surprise Tena Lundquist Faust, who runs another Houston animal rescue nonprofit. “Once she becomes focused on a rescue situation, she is unstoppable,” says Faust. “She is really a rock star.”

Diagnosed (诊断) as a baby with a disorder called Oculocutancous albinism Type l (OCA1), my very pale skin and white hair surprised my parents. Doctors explained to them that the condition would cause vision (视力) loss.
Being so pale meant I had to be covered from head to foot when I went outside. I also had sunglasses to protect my eyes. Though we did everything we could, I lost sight in both eyes at the age of 10.
My parents thought I should lead as normal a life as possible so I went to a school for the blind and learned to read and write Braille (a printing system for blind people). I also took part in athletics which I loved, and I turned out to be a pretty good runner. Keeping my head straight to stay within the lines, I often beat even sighted runners. Goalball was another sport I loved. Sports gave me courage and hope, allowing me to believe in myself.
In Year 5, I started at a mainstream school (普通学校). I was a bit nervous but luckily, on the first day, support workers gave my classmates “special lessons” on vision impairment (受损). “Close your eyes and tie your shoes,” they told the other kids, to give them some perspective (视角) on my world. I made a lot of good friends. Meanwhile, I began competing for the USA in the sport of goalball. “We’re so proud of you,” said my parents whenever I won awards for our country.
At 18, I got a place to study psychology at the University of Adelaide, SA. Unable to drive, I had to take the subway. That’s when I was given my guide dog, Rocket. He became my eyes and my lifeline.
My disability has made me who I am and I’ve never been upset by my blindness. I want to spread the word that it’s cool to be different.

When older adults fall at home, every second counts - especially when they are alone.
Professor Yu Chen and PhD student Han Sun designed the Rapid Response Elderly Safety Monitoring (RESAM) system to cut reaction times by using local computing power to analyze sensor data (分析传感器数据) and discover abnormal movements.
In a paper recently published in the IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering, they show that the RESAM system can run using a smartphone, smartwatch or pad with 99% accuracy (准确性) and a 1.22-second reaction time, positioning it among the most accurate methods available today.
Chen said the research is important: “When many people talk about high tech, they are discussing something really advanced. We observed some people — older adults — who need more help but normally fail to tell high-tech developers what they need.” By using devices (设备) already familiar to older people, rather than a full “smart home” setup, Sun thinks it gives them a better sense of control over their health. They don’t need to learn new technology for the system to be effective.
“The most dangerous place for falls is the bathroom, but nobody wants to set up a camera there,” Chen said. “So our RESAM reduces the recorded images to skeletons (骨骼), which still allows analysis of key point s such as arms and legs to know if someone has fallen.”
Another idea, which Chen is exploring with Associate Professor Shiqi Zhang, is for the system to include a robot dog or similar “pet” that would keep a closer watch as someone did their daily tasks. “You could have a conversation with the robot,” Chen said. “For example, when you are heading to the bathroom, the dog may ask you,” Would you mind if I follow you? “Having the dog move closer to check your condition is better than having only fixed sensors in the room.”
32. What is the function of the RESAM system?
A. To turn a house into a smart home.
B. To teach the old how to use smart devices.
C. To quickly discover when the old fall at home.
D. To improve the performance of home computers.
33. What is good about the RESAM system according to Sun?
A. It is simple to use. B. It saves money for its users.
C. It has high safety standards. D. It is designed for smart home products.
34. What did researchers take into consideration when designing the RESAM system?
A. Users’ age. B. Privacy protection.
C. The cost of sensors. D. Service quality.
35. What can we expect of the RESAM system?
A. It could analyze injury information. B. It could monitor the health of pets.
C. It would include fixed sensors. D. It would run on a robot pet.
D. How AI will bridge the gap between different languages.

The best ways to improve creative thinking
When it comes to creativity, one of our biggest concerns is usually how we can be more creative, or how to come up with better ideas. I’ve gathered some of the most practical studies to help improve creativity. All of these studies are useful for everyday creativity. 36
Embrace something absurd (荒谬的). 37 Absurd art makes the brain work extra hard for a moment when the mind tries to work out exactly what it is looking at or reading, which contributes to innovation to a large extent. I like reading interesting short stories like The Last Question when I am looking for some inspiration.
Create when emotions run high. While many assume happiness is the key to creativity, recent research reached an important conclusion: 38 I’m not suggesting you put yourself in a bad mood to create something, but next time you find yourself in a strong emotional state, try sitting down and focus that energy on creating something.
39 Some research suggests that exercise can actually improve creative thinking as well, due to its ability to get the heart pumping and put people in a positive mood. 40 In both cases, what matters isn’t the specific activity, but the positive emotional shift it creates. If you’re stuck in a creative job and want to take a break, try exercise while your brain is subconsciously at work. It may help to speed up your “Aha!” moment.
A. Fuel creativity through workouts.
B. Come up with more creative ideas.
C. The more intense the emotion, the greater the creativity.
D. Try a few out for yourself and see which ones work best for you.
E. We are in two very different states of mind when we are trying to create something.
F. Research suggests reading or experiencing such things can help improve creative thinking.
G. It’s similar to how other research shows that thinking about love can produce more creative thoughts.

Tina was a high school girl who loved comparing herself with others. She always cared about the latest clothes, expensive phones, and designer bags. Whenever someone showed off a new item, she’d feel jealous and immediately turn to her parents for something better. Having no idea how to deal with it, her parents had no choice but to satisfy her. With what she wanted on, peers would follow her, flattering her from head to toe. Tina smiled, with a barely perceived sense of emptiness.
At the beginning of the fall semester, Tina noticed a new face from another class. It’s Rita, who just transferred from a neighboring school. The girl was always alone, with simple clothes and an old schoolbag, but a smile hovered on her lips wherever she went. After school, Rita never got involved in classmates’ discussions about brands or luxuries. Instead, she herself spent most of her time in the classroom, studying or helping classmates with mathematics problems, or in the school library, doing voluntary jobs. One month later, Rita got straight As in a series of comprehensive tests and was awarded “the most popular student” in the school assembly. Her shining smile was brighter than ever, and young boys and girls began to gather around her.
One afternoon, Tina walked up to Rita, who was sitting under a tree and reading a book. “Hi, I’m Tina. What makes you so happy every day? You didn’t even have any friends.” Tina poured out her puzzles. Rita looked up with a familiar smile, “I feel every single day fruitful. I feel happy just because I’m on the way of being the one I want to be. That’s the secret.” Something hit Tina at that very moment. She turned back and headed home, without saying anything, not even goodbye. That night, Tina lay in bed and stared at the ceiling, replaying Rita’s words in her mind and lost in deep thought.
