Some people say it is not easy for a middle-
aged person to learn a foreign language. But is it
1 (real)true?
Several years ago,I worked for 2
English newspaper which was doing such a
research.They asked me to learn
a new
language for one month. Then I had to go to the
country and do some“tests”3(see)ifI
could“survive(挺过来)”in different situations.
I chose Spanish(西班牙语)and did a one
month course at a language school and
.4
(find)that some Spanish words are very similar
to English ones.5 example,hola isn't very
different from“hello”.Of course,there are
other things which are more difficult. In Spanish
you have to change the verbs(动词)for each
person.But my
6
(big)problem of all was
the
pronunciation.I found
7
was
very
difficult to pronounce some letters in Spanish,
especially r and j.So I had to download

(sentence)onto my phone and I listened and
practised them again and again.
A month later I went to Spain.A Spanish
teacher 9
)(call)Paula came and began the
test."Will I survive?"I wasn't sure enough but
10
I wished I would!

What makes good learners?Some people
may say good learners should remember what
they learned 1.Others say they can learn
what they are good at.Confucius,a great
thinker and teacher in ancient China, also shared
2 idea in The Analects of Confucius(《论
语》).He said,“I will not teach him3he's
not eager;I will not explain to him if he's not

Life has its limits(限制)but5】
has
none.A person cannot have all the knowledge,
but he can learn as much as he can.To do so,
students should be good at 6.Confucius
believes that one way to be good at learning is
to derive three from one.He hopes that when
they gain knowledge in one area, they can also
think 7 if and how they can use it to solve
problems in other areas. This way of learning
was
8
in ancient China. So is it today. Now,
there is so much information every day and
information is often put together in
9
ways.If people often try to "derive three from
one”,they can
10
their knowledge in
different areas and use it better.

W.阅读表达。
Even if there's so much about English that
can
be learned from a book or even in a
traditional classroom setting,a lot of the
language can still be learned best in
more
relaxing situations where students are having
fun.Here are some suggestions.
Communicate with strangers.If you live
in an
area
filled with English speakers,get
students out of the classroom.Put them among
other English speakers.Students may not speak
to strangers, but they will know how the words
they learned are used. For example, they'll hear
conversations taking place and may begin to
understand how the words learned in the
classroom are actually used in everyday speech.
Let their guard down. One difficult thing
for English learners is believing in themselves.
Fun activities, especially those outside of the
classroom, give students a chance to feel
relaxed.They will speak more freely.
Make use of English media.Most
recorded language instruction is pretty boring
and students will get tired when hearing the
same voice repeat the same phrases. You can let
students go to a movie in English. They will
hear
common expressions and more everyday
conversations in the movie.
1.How many suggestions are given in the passage?
2.What is the advantage of putting students among
other English speakers?
3.When students go to a movie in English, what
will they hear in the movie?
V.信息摘录。
You already take many notes, but i
now
you're wondering how to develop your note-
taking skills and start taking notes that are
better for you. Here are some note-taking ways
you can use.
Pay attention to key words. The most
important change you can make is to
pay
attention to taking down key words.Write down
the most relevant(相关的)keywords or
phrases to the topic.Don't waste time writing
down information that you have already known.
Pay attention to new information that you've
never learned before. This will be the most
valuable for your note-taking.
Use shorthand(速记).Developing y
your
own way of shorthand writing can help you to
write quickly and avoid falling behind.Try
writing things like“wd”for“would”,“cd”for
“could”and“wi”for“with”.Also,try to
shorten long words that appear again and again.
Make your notes tidier. You will not go
back and study your notes if they are difficult to
read!Always start on a fresh page.You'll find
your
notes much easier to read if you start on a
fresh page for each new class or topic. It is
helpful to use different forms in order not to
forget key ideas.

ⅥI.拓展阅读。(通辽)
The scientific method is used for simple
experiments(实验)that students may do in the
classroom or very difficult experiments that
scientists are doing throughout the world. It is a
way of thinking that helps you to avoid drawing
incorrect conclusions.There are usually four
steps in the scientific method,including
observation(观察),hypothesis(假设),
experiment and conclusion.
The first step is usually observation and
asking a question about your observation. For
example, you had a sick stomach and ate a piece
of chocolate. Two hours later, you observed that
you felt better. Here you can ask a question such as
“What makes a sick stomach feel better'”
The next
step is to
state
a
possible
hypothesis, such as "A piece of chocolate makes
a sick stomach feel better."A good hypothesis
includes three things:it can explain the
observations;it can be tested and it will usually
predict new conclusions.
The third step is the experiment,to test the
hypothesis. An experiment is a test which will
either support or challenge the hypothesis. The
hypothesis will then be true or false.
The final step is to think about what
happened when you tested the hypothesis and
draw a conclusion. The conclusion will either
clearly support the hypothesis or it will not.If
the results support the hypothesis,a conclusion
can be written. If they don't support
the
hypothesis, you may choose to change the
hypothesis or write a new one based on what
was learned during the experiment.
