on time“按时”是固定搭配,on符合语境。
Prepare a good timetable和break down tasks说明要聪明合理地规划,wisely“明智地”最能体现“巧妙分配时间”的核心含义,符合语境。
break down tasks into steps是循序渐进地完成,每完成一步都能make progress“取得进步”,符合语境。
后文a place where no one will talk to you or make noises说明需要quiet“安静的”空间,符合语境。
a place where no one will talk说明要主动choose“选择”这样的地方,符合语境。

My Dog Has Got No Manners by Bruce Lansky
My dog has got no manners.
I think he’s very rude.
He always whines (哀鸣) at dinnertime while we are eating food.

The traditional Beijing yard house, or siheyuan, is a special building that has experienced the test of time since the Ming dynasty. It’s not just a house, but a symbol of traditional Chinese family life. Its name, which means “four-sided yard”, comes from its design. The central yard of a siheyuan serves as the heart of the home, and is used for daily activities.
In a siheyuan, each side of the yard is a living area with a different purpose. The southern side is usually used for main gate, while the eastern and western sides are guest rooms. The northern side is often the most private, used for family bedrooms or living spaces. The siheyuan’s open design is so special that it helps bring in plenty of sunlight and fresh air. This makes the house bright. The yard provides a place of relaxation from the busy streets outside.
Nowadays, the number of siheyuans in Beijing has reduced over the years. With the city’s modernization, many yard houses were demolished to make way for apartments and business buildings.
Fortunately, there are growing actions to protect siheyuan. Many yard houses have been rebuilt and turned into hotels, museums and cultural centers, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of siheyuan. For those lucky enough to own a siheyuan, it’s a kind of memory and pride for a changing city. When modern development is making life more convenient, there’s nothing like the sense of history and community that a siheyuan brings.
21. The name “siheyuan” comes from ________.

A. To make people experience the modern life.
B. To help experts explore the traditional buildings.
C. To attract visitors to feel the beauty of siheyuan.

25. What is the author’s attitude towards the siheyuan?
A. The author strongly supports its protection.

Pre-reading
Hello, boys and girls. Have you ever thought about what you would do in an emergency Basic first aid can mean the difference between life and death. Let’s take a closer look at HelenCowan’s experience.
Save a Stranger’s Life
Helen Cowan had decided to sit in the garden one evening when she heard a loud noise. At first, she thought something had fallen from her recently renovated (翻新的) house. But as she walked to the front of the house, she saw a small crowd gathered outside.
As she walked toward the crowd, she saw a boy lying in a pool of blood near a crashed (撞坏的) motorbike. His leg was almost cut off at the knee. Luckily, when Helen asked about his condition, the young man could still talk, even though he was in great pain.
Helen had knowledge of first aid and had also taken a British Red Cross first aid course. She used her training to make a quick assessment (评估) of the situation. Then she ran back inside her home to get several thick towels (毛巾) to stop the bleeding.
As Helen returned to the scene (现场) with the towels, a voice from the crowd had called an ambulance (救护车), but the young man was still bleeding heavily. “On my return, I could see that the other people were afraid to come forward and help. I used the towel as best I could to apply (施加) pressure to the wound until help arrived.” Helen recalled. Then she successfully managed to control the bleeding and comforted the young man while waiting for help to arrive. Before long, the ambulance team arrived at the scene.
Unfortunately, doctors weren’t able to save the man’s leg, but they did save his life and Helen’s actions played a key role. Without the simple but effective (有效的) first aid skills Helen used, the results of this accident could have been far worse.
“Knowing first aid gave me the confidence to look at the situation, to stay calm, and most importantly, to step forward to help in an emergency situation when others wouldn’t. I feel so happy that my first aid knowledge helped me save a stranger’s life.” Helen said.

55. Love Notes
From the time when each of my children started school, I packed their lunches. And in each lunch that I packed for them, I put a note, often written on a napkin. The note might be a thank-you for a special moment, a reminder of something we were happily looking forward to, or a bit of encouragement for a coming test or sporting event.
In early grade school they loved their notes—they wrote something on them after school as a reply, and they even put notes in my lunches! But as the kids grew older they became self-conscious, and my older son, Marc, after being laughed at by his classmate for the notes, told me that he no longer needed my daily missives but I continued the tradition until the day when he graduated.
Marc is now a successful doctor in Washington DC. Last November, Marc called me and asked me if he could stay with us for two months. It was six years since he began to work. This year his younger sister was leaving for college, his younger brother, Sam, will be a senior in high school. Sam, too, told me that he is too old for notes. But like his elder brother and sister, he will receive those notes till the day he graduates.
I was especially excited and pleased to have Marc coming back home.
During those two months, I was still making lunch every day for his younger brother. Of course, I packed one for Marc, too, then he could have his lunch on the way back to his home. Imagine my surprise when I got a phone call from my 30-year-old son, Marc, complaining his lunch from his home. “Did I do something wrong? Aren’t I still your kid? Don’t you love me any more, Mom?” were just a few of the questions he threw at me as I laughingly asked him what was wrong.
“My note, Mom,” he answered. “Where’s my note?”

A. its cultural meaning B. its building style
C. its family history D. its special color
22. Which is most probably the picture of a siheyuan according to Paragraph 2?
A. B. C. D.
23. What does the underlined word “demolished” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. turned off B. broken out C. set up D. taken down
24. Why do the growing actions protect and rebuild siheyuan?
A. To make people experience the modern life.
B. To help experts explore the traditional buildings.
C. To attract visitors to feel the beauty of siheyuan.
D. To allow owners to celebrate the benefits of siheyuan.
25. What is the author’s attitude towards the siheyuan?
A. The author strongly supports its protection.
B. The author is mainly worried about its future.
C. The author doesn’t care about its changes.
D. The author is not sure about its value.

Why do we love old book smell?
For people who love reading, there’s nothing better than the smell of an old book. ___26___
The paper, ink and glue that are used to make books hold hundreds of chemical compounds (化合物). And one of the compounds found a lot in old books is called “lignin (木质素)”.
Lignin is a compound found in the trees that paper is made from. As a book gets older, ___27___ and they give off chemicals we can smell.
People like the smell so much. ___28___ According to a study from University College London, people think the smell of old books is similar to the smell of chocolate.
For the study, scientists created an “old book smell” using fibers (纤维) from a 1928 French book. Seventy-nine people smelled the old book smell, ___29___ They were then asked to describe it. A large number of people said it smelled like chocolate. Others said it smelled like coffee. This shouldn’t be a surprise: coffee and chocolate also come from materials having lignin.
Lignin might give books their sweet smell, ___30___ And books today use paper with less lignin. This might let them stay white longer, but won’t make them smell as sweet in the future.
