II.
What do you do with clothes you don't want to wear any more? You may donate them or give them to other people. What happens next? Where do these clothes end up?
It's reported that 92 million tons of clothes end up in landfills every year. This means that every second a truck full of clothes arrives at a landfill. Sadly, the beaches of Ghana, a country in West Africa, are one of these places. Now, the beaches are covered with clothing waste.
People from all over the world donate clothes to charities. However, charity shops only sell up to 20 per cent of donated clothes. The unsold clothes are then put in large bags and travel to other countries to be sold again or treated as waste.
The Kantamanto market in Accra, the capital of Ghana, is one of the world's largest secondhand clothing markets. Every week, 20 million pieces of clothes arrive at Kantamanto. But about 40 per cent of them leave the market as waste.
Workers either burn the waste or put it underground. However, the city is near the sea, so there's not enough space for landfills. This is why a lot of clothing waste ends up on the beach. As it goes into the sea, fish and other sea life are in danger. Sea turtles can't get to land, and fish can't grow because they may get caught in the clothes.
"The waste is also hurting the economy, " Ernest Ijawan, a worker at a landfill in Ghana, told Forbes. Fishermen can't catch as many fish as before since most of the things they catch are clothes.
According to another survey, many fast fashion clothes are worn only 7 to 10 times, and then they are thrown away. Around 15 years ago, this number was 10 to 15 times. People may not have realized that our clothes can be bad for the environment. But that's the fact. So please think twice before we buy clothes or throw them away.

Last year, there was a charity bazaar in Sunshine Middle School. It was really successful because we not only raised enough money but also made more people understand the meaning of helping others.
For the charity bazaar, each class chose a theme or designed a slogan that they wanted to show. Then students decorated their booths. Students prepared many things for the charity sale. Some brought their toys while others brought some storybooks. To be honest, parting with their lovely toys was a little hard. One of the students said, "I have owned a teddy bear for 6 years. It brought good memories to me. I sold it because I wanted to pass the feeling of joy to others."
The charity bazaar was successful. Many visitors came to the event. They said that they were excited and happy to be part of the event.
In fact, it's not the first time for most of us to help others. A student told me that his family sells off old things in their house twice a year and gives the money to the charity. What's more, our school also holds charity shows and activities every year. When asked why our school does this, the words of a teacher touched me greatly. He said that as a student, it's a good way to learn knowledge, but being kind is more important than being a student with high grades.
1. How was the charity bazaar last year?
2. What can you learn from the words of the student?
3. Why do you think Sunshine Middle School holds charity activities every year?
If you want to apply to your school for a charity activity...
4. What kind of charity activity do you want to hold?
5. What will you say to apply? (No less than 30 words)

People from all over the world donate clothes to charities... sell up to 20 per cent of donated clothes...treated as waste." Workers either burn the waste or put it underground .. not enough space for landfills."
So please think twice before we buy clothes or throw them away."
