Have you ever looked at a cat’s face and wondered what it is thinking? A team of scientists from the University of California might have some answers. In a fascinating new study, researchers discovered that cats use 276 different facial expressions to show their feelings—far more than we have ever imagined!
①________
The scientists visited a local cat cafe in Los Angeles for over several months to observe (观察) 53 cats. They recorded 194 minutes of videos, carefully watching how the cats communicate with each other. Using a special system called FACS (Facial Action Coding System), which is normally used to study human expressions, they identified 26 unique facial movements in cats. These movements—like licking (舔) their nose, opening their mouth, or widening their pupils (the black part of their eyes)—combine in different ways to create all those expressions. They also found cats use 26 of these facial movements in total, which can be mixed to express how they are feeling. Dogs use 27 facial movements and humans use a total of 44.
②________
Out of the expressions they recorded, 45% were friendly and 37% were angry. “A friendly cat moves its ears and whiskers forward while closing its eyes slowly—almost like a smile! However, an angry cat often flattens its ears to its head, makes its pupils smaller and licks its lips,” said the team.
③________
Although the researchers aren’t sure what the cats were trying to communicate with each other using their faces, they plan to study cats in other places to improve their understanding. They also hope that the research could help animal shelters (收容所) improve the way they look after the cats. Some pet owners even suggest the researchers develop an app that scans a cat’s face to explain its mood—like a “cat translator”.
Next time your cat stares at you, pay attention—it might be “talking” with its face!
63. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By giving numbers. B. By telling a story. C. By showing some facts. D. By asking a question.
64. Which of the following uses the most facial movements?
A. Cats. B. Humans. C. Dogs. D. Tigers.
65. Match the title with each part.
a. Why Does This Matter? b. Friendly Faces or Angry Faces?
c. How Did They Study Cats? d. Future Research on Cat Communication.
A. ①-a ②-b ③-d B. ①-b ②-c ③-a C. ①-c ②-b ③-d D. ①-d ②-b ③-c
66. What might the scientists do next?
A. Keep on studying to know more about cats.
B. Find out why the cats try to communicate with each other.
C. Build an animal shelter to look after cats.
D. Use an app to study cats’ expressions.
67. What would be the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
D
There are many animals that glow (发光) in some way—including several kinds of insects and fish. Some kinds of mushrooms glow, too. But plants don’t glow. Now, scientists are working to change that.
When a living thing gives off a glow, it’s called bioluminescence (生物发光). Fireflies are a well-known example of bioluminescence. Though less well-known, many mushrooms are also bioluminescent. These bioluminescent creatures light up thanks to the luciferins (荧光素) in their bodies.
Plants don’t naturally have luciferins, ________. But that hasn’t stopped scientists from trying to create them. In the past, scientists have created dimly (微暗地) glowing plants by adding DNA from glowing objects. Scientists have also created glowing plants by adding luciferins to plants. But it only works as long as the chemicals last. In 2017, a team was able to cause a plant to glow for about four hours.
Now, researchers at a Russian company have come up with a new method to create glowing plants which last as long as the plants are alive. By adding certain parts of the DNA from glowing mushrooms to ordinary tobacco plants, the researchers were able to create plants that could make their own luciferins. The scientists reported that the light was about 10 times brighter than in earlier glowing plants.
The researchers believe that glowing plants could help scientists learn more about how plants work. For example, waves of light in the plants may show activities in plants that normally can’t be seen. The glowing also helps show how plants may be affected by things around them. For example, the plants glowed more strongly when a ripe (成熟的) banana skin was nearby. But the researchers don’t think the plants will just be used for science. They think many people may want glowing plants for their beauty. So they are working with a company to develop glowing plants for sale.
68. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Several kinds of insects and fish can glow. B. Some kinds of mushrooms glow.
C. Fireflies can naturally glow. D. Plants don’t give off a glow.
69. Which of the following is the best to fill in the “________” in Paragraph 3?
A. so scientists are trying hard to create some glowing plants
B. because the luciferins are so important to them
C. and scientists don’t know why it happens
D. so there are no naturally bioluminescent plants
70. What is the main idea of paragraph 5?
A. The harmful influence of glowing plants.
B. The uses of glowing plants.
C. The natural glow of all plants near fruits.
D. The efforts of researchers all over the world.
71. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A Valuable Lesson from Failure
Life is full of challenges, and I once faced a big failure. Let me share this experience.
Last term, I failed an important English exam. I studied hard but failed. I felt upset and wanted to give up. However, my teacher encouraged me, saying failure is the mother of success and helping me. I followed her advice, worked harder, and spent two extra hours on English each weekend. I also asked for help. After months of work, I made great progress.
From this experience, I’ve learnt failure isn’t terrible. What matters is facing it bravely and keeping trying. Where there is a will, there is a way. It will help me become a better person.
