①If a player runs 100 meters in less than 10 seconds, he may be an excellent runner in the world. Recently, a Chinese team has brought a robotic dog, whose speed can reach 10 meters per second! Here is the introduction to it.
②It’s called Black Panther 2.0, weighing 38 kilograms and standing 0.63 meters tall. It becomes one of the world’s fastest robots with 4 legs.
③The robotic dog was invented in Zhejiang. The researchers carefully watched black panthers and kangaroos to improve the robot’s high-speed movement. As a result, the robot can move like a real animal.
④One researcher said they used AI machines to help the robot learn. Then they changed its steps and the way of walking in different situations.
⑤Black Panther 2.0 now does better in short running than most humans, yet still falls behind fast runners on land like cheetahs (猎豹). In the future, the research team plans to further understand the gap between robots and living things.
⑥While dogs are often called “man’s best friends”, technology may have made them play different roles in the human world.
⑦Some robotic dogs are carrying heavy things on Mount Tai. They can climb the mountain without any difficulty. These robots can carry 30 to 40 kilograms of litter and climb the mountain much faster than most people.
⑧Not long ago, China’s army used a robotic dog armed with a gun during the exercise. This dog, with a gun on its back, was practicing attacking (攻击) a building. It’s said that the robotic dog could take a human’s place to serve as a protector.

For deaf and hard-of-hearing people, communicating with those who don’t understand sign language can be a big challenge. But thanks to a great invention—the AI Sign Language Translation Glove — this problem may soon be a thing of the past.
Developed by a team of engineers from Tsinghua University, the glove is a perfect combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and wearable technology. It is equipped with tiny sensors (感应器) that can sense movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists (腕关节). When a deaf person wears the glove and uses sign languages, the sensors collect data about these movements and send it to a connected smartphone app.
The AI in the app then analyzes (分析) the data in real time and translates the sign language into spoken words or text. At the same time, the app can also translate spoken words from others into text, so the deaf person can read what is being said. The whole process takes less than one second, making communication smooth and natural.
What makes this glove even more amazing is that it’s easy to carry and not expensive. Unlike traditional sign language translation devices that are big and expensive, the AI glove is lightweight and costs only about 500 yuan. This means it can be used by ordinary people, not just rich families or organizations.
Since it came out last year, the glove has helped thousands of deaf people in China. A user named Li Na said, “Before, I always had to ask my sister to translate for me when I went shopping or saw a doctor. Now, with this glove, I can talk to anyone by myself. It has changed my life completely.”
The team behind the glove is now working on improving its accuracy (精确度) and adding more languages. They hope that one day, the glove will be used all over the world, breaking down communication walls between deaf and hearing people.
18.The underlined word “devices” in this passage is close in meaning to________.
A.methods B.books C.tools D.dictionaries
19.Which of the following is true about the AI glove?
A.It was invented by engineers from a foreign university.
B.It takes more than one second to finish the translation.
C.It costs more than most traditional translation devices.
D.It is a combination of special gloves and a smartphone app.
20.Which of the following examples goes against the descriptions of the AI glove?
A.A deaf student can ask the teacher questions with the AI glove without a translator.
B.An old deaf man finds the AI glove too heavy to carry when he goes to the market.
C.A deaf patient uses the AI glove to talk with a doctor about his mother’s illness.
D.A young deaf person uses the AI glove to order food in a restaurant by himself.
21.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.The importance of communication.
B.An introduction to the AI glove.
C.The challenges faced by deaf people.
D.The working steps of the AI glove.
第四段“Unlike traditional sign language translation devices that are big and expensive”,结合上下文可知这里的devices指的是用于翻译的“设备”或“工具”。
19.文中第二段提到是由“Tsinghua University”(清华大学)的工程师开发,并非外国大学,A项错误;第三段提到“The whole process takes less than one second”(整个过程耗时不到一秒),B项错误;第四段提到它比传统设备便宜(costs only about 500 yuan),C项错误;第二段提到手套配有传感器并将数据发送到“connected smartphone app”(连接的智能手机应用程序),是手套与app的结合,D项正确。

Uncle Tom sang a song about angels and Heaven with Eva in the garden.
“Uncle Tom, sometimes I see those spirits,” said Eva. “They come to me in my sleep. I’m going there.” Eva pointed her finger to the sky and said, “To the bright spirits.”
Uncle Tom’s heart almost stopped. He looked at Eva. She didn’t look well she was often tired, her breath was short, she had a cough, and she was getting very thin.
Miss Ophelia noticed this too, and she tried to tell Eva’s father, St Clare.
“Stop that!” St Clare said. “Don’t you see that the child is only growing up? It’s what happens to children of her age.”
“But she has that cough?”
“That’s nothing. Maybe she has a little cold,” St Clare said.
Eva’s health got even worse. She became very weak and she could hardly leave the house, so St Clare sent her to the hospital.
In a week or two, it seemed that Eva’s health improved greatly. St Clare was happy and he was sure Eva would get better. But Miss Ophelia was not so sure, and neither was Eva herself. One afternoon, when St Clare called Eva to give her a present, “Papa, I am going to leave you soon.” said Eva, and she started crying.
“Oh, my dear!” said St Clare, “you’re just tired and a little weak because of the illness. You will be perfectly fine soon.”
“No, Papa” said Eva, “I won’t get better. I am not sad. I’m sorry for you, Papa, and my friends, but I want to go?”
“Why do you want to go? Are you unhappy, Eva?”
“Oh, I feel sad for our slaves (奴隶): they are all good and kind to me. I wish, Papa they were all free.”
“Don’t you think we treat them well?” said St Clare.
“But what will happen to them if anything happens to you? There are very few men like you, Papa. Some people buy the husbands but not the wives, some people buy the mothers and sell the children. What terrible things people do! Papa, isn’t there any way to make all slaves free?”
“Slavery is a very bad thing, but I don’t know what to do about it.” said St Clare.
“Promise me that Uncle Tom will be free as soon as I’m asleep.” said Eva.
—Taken from Uncle Tom’s Cabin
22.Why did Eva want to go according to the passage?
A.Because she became very weak and she could hardly leave the house.

C.Because she couldn’t sing a song with Uncle Tom any more.
D.Because she felt unhappy that St Clare didn’t treat the slaves well.

Is there a way to quickly recall information just before taking an exam? 26 Scientists from the University of Roehampton in the UK said this activity can help people improve their short-term memory.
Researchers asked 114 volunteers to watch a video. After watching the video, the volunteers were divided into three groups. 27 The second group walked 10 meters backwards. The third group stood in one place. All the groups were then asked 20 questions about what they saw in the video. The scientists found that the backward-walking group got two more answers correct on average (平均) than the other two groups.
This suggests that the link between the concepts of time and space is important in how our minds form memories. “Time is really expressed through space,” Aleksandar Aksentijevic, who led the study, told the Daily Mail. When you walk backward, you see things from a different angle. 28
And walking backward is also good for the rest of our body. 29 This can help us improve our fitness, according to New Scientist. Walking backward uses more energy in a short time and burns more calories (卡路里).
30 It could be helpful for people who often have pain in their knees, according to researchers from the University of Oregon in the US. Walking backward also keeps our spines strong, which can help to ease pain in the lower back. This might be why many old people like walking backward.
A.Walking backward might help you.
B.Your memory might just thank you for it.
C.One group was told to walk 10 meters forward.
D.Sometimes, the best way forward really is a step back.
E.In addition, walking backward is less stressful for our knees.
F.This difference helps people recall things that happened in the past.
G.Compared to walking forward, walking backward is more challenging.
【答案】26.A 27.C 28.F 29.G 30.E
A项“Walking backward might help you.”
C项“One group was told to walk 10 meters forward.”
F项“This difference helps people recall things that happened in the past.”
G项“Compared to walking forward, walking backward is more challenging.”
E项“In addition, walking backward is less stressful for our knees.”

Dreamers Dream, Doers Do
Amy was a dear little girl, but she was always wasting time getting prepared to do her tasks, instead of doing them at once as she should do.
In the village, Mr Thornton kept a store where he sold all kinds of fruits, including berries (莓子) when in season. One morning he said to Amy, “Well, Amy, I noticed some fine, ripe (成熟的) blackberries on Mr Green’s farm today. He said that anybody was welcome to them. I will pay you 13 cents a kilogram for all that you pick for me.”
Amy was excited about the thought of making some money to help her mum, so she quickly ran home to get a basket to hold the berries. Then she thought she would like to know how much money she would get if she picked five kilograms. After finding out that she would get 65 cents, she started to dream big, “If I pick a dozen kilograms, how much would I make then?”
“Dear me,” she shouted, after calculating (计算) a while. “I should make a dollar and fifty-six cents!”
It took her some time to dream bigger, and then it was so near lunchtime that she had to stay at home until the afternoon.
As soon as lunch was over, she took her basket and hurried to the farm. Some boys had been there before lunch, and all the ripe blackberries were picked. She could not find half a kilogram to fill her basket. Then she thought of what her teacher often told her, “Do your task at once; then think about it. One doer is worth 100 dreamers.”
54.Where did Mr Thornton say the blackberries could be found?
55.Why couldn’t Amy find half a kilo of blackberries in the afternoon?
56.Would you like to be a doer? Why?
54.On Mr Green’s farm. 55.Because some boys had picked all the ripe blackberries before lunch. 56.Yes, I’d like to be a doer. Because doing tasks at once helps us seize opportunities and achieve goals, while just dreaming may make us miss what we can get.

Be a Little Light
Life is full of small warm moments. Many common people act as little lights, bringing hope to others.
To me, “a little light” means small acts of kindness. A smile, a helping hand, or a few warm words can make a big difference.
Last week at our sports meeting, a boy suddenly fell and hurt his leg during the 1000-metre race. He tried to get up but failed. Just then, another boy who was running ahead turned back, helped him up,and they walked across the finishing line together. The warm scene moved everyone deeply.

Uncle Tom’s heart almost stopped. He looked at Eva. She didn’t look well she was often tired, her breath was short, she had a cough, and she was getting very thin.
Miss Ophelia noticed this too, and she tried to tell Eva’s father, St Clare.
