For centuries, lacquer fans (漆扇) have been loved for their beauty and cultural value.
Lacquer fans are special fans from China, and their history dates back to the Han Dynasty. Later, lacquer fans became one of the top collections in the art world in the Tang Dynasty. Lacquer is a natural varnish (清漆) taken from the lacquer tree. It was first used to coat wooden objects to protect them from water and insects. Interestingly, ancient workers discovered its artistic characteristics by accident when colorful patterns naturally formed on the water. Over time, workers began to use lacquer to make and decorate fans.
Lacquer fans are made of bamboo or wooden frames. Traditionally, they are painted with different themes and patterns, such as landscapes, flowers and birds, and figures, to make them more beautiful. Although the methods of making fans continue to develop, skilled workers still use traditional techniques to create lacquer fans, keeping this ancient art alive.
Nowadays, lacquer fan painting is one of the most popular activities among young people, which is considered a new form of expression of lacquer art. Instead of using traditional tools such as brushes, lacquer fan painting is done with only the lacquer and water. The process is quite simple yet filled with artistic possibilities. First, people freely choose a fan and the colors they want to use. Then they carefully drop the colored lacquer into the water. With gentle stirring (搅拌) using a thin tool, the colors blend and dance like ink in a Chinese watercolor painting, creating special shapes. Next, put the bamboo fan in the water for a few seconds and that’s it.

In 1640, an old man returned home, weak but peaceful after his final journey. Villagers asked, “You traveled all your life. Do you regret it?” His eyes still shone brightly as he answered, “I saw China’s greatest wonders and walked where heroes like Zhang Qian once stood. How could I regret it?” This man was Xu Xiake, a traveler who left his footprints across China.
As a boy, while others studied books, Xu dreamed of mountains and rivers. At 22, he began a 30-year journey, facing dangers like robbers (强盗) and wild forests. But he never stopped, showing that strong will can overcome any difficulty.
Xu made important discoveries. Once, people argued about which Huangshan mountain top was taller—Tiandu or Lianhua. Xu climbed both through thick fog. Seeing farther—a longer distance (距离) from Lianhua’s top, he proved (证明) it was higher, mixing bravery with careful thinking.
He wrote everything in Xu Xiake’s Travel Notes, a book that lets us see China about 400 years ago. His words paint pictures of magical caves and foggy mountains, teaching us that travel isn’t running away—it’s learning to love the world more deeply.
Xu’s story shows the true meaning of travel: it changes how we see life. Every step he took reminds us that traveling is like talking with nature, helping us grow wiser. Today, when we walk his paths, we remember his lesson—real discoveries happen not just by moving forward, but by daring to explore the unknown.

①Crowds of tourists wait for hours to look at the painting of the Mona Lisa in Paris. Lots of cruise ships with thousands of passengers enter the harbour (港口) of Venice. A long line of climbers wait on the side of Mount Everest to climb to the top. These are all examples of overtourism or, in other words, more tourists than a place can deal with.
②Tourism is important for money and jobs in many countries, but large numbers of tourists can be a danger to famous places. For example, Venice in Italy has got a population of about 300,000 people, but it has over 24,000,000 visitors a year. There are problems with traffic, rubbish and damage to buildings. It’s also a problem for local people because the price of houses and food at restaurants increases in popular tourist areas, so it becomes difficult for people to live there.
③Is there a way to stop overtourism? Some places are increasing the price of tickets to famous places. Cities like Amsterdam and Paris are collecting tax to pay for solving the problems that overtourism has brought. Another way is to reduce numbers of tourists. According to an online article by Forbes, in 2016 there were 10,000 tourists a day from cruise ships on the Greek island of Santorini between May and September. Now there is a limit (限制) of 8,000 a day. The Peruvian Tourist Board reported that in 2018, there were over 1,500,000 visitors to the historic site of Machu Picchu in Peru. Now there is a time limit of four hours to control the number of people passing through it in each part of the day.
④How can we stop overtourism? For your next sightseeing trip, why not visit some small towns and places that aren’t very popular with tourists? Or plan your visit for a time when the number of visitors is low. Spend money in local restaurants and hotels. Above all, be careful not to damage ancient buildings and don’t leave rubbish.
34.How does the writer lead into the topic?
A.By listing numbers. B.By asking questions. C.By giving examples. D.By making comparisons.
35.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.The importance of tourism. B.The development of tourism.
C.The problems of overtourism. D.The solutions of overtourism.
36.What does the underlined word “tax” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Money. B.Advice. C.Experience. D.Information.
37.According to the last paragraph, what should we do to stop overtourism?
A.Stay at home. B.Go to small towns.
C.Visit ancient buildings. D.Travel during public holidays.
