About a year ago, my mother turned on the dishwasher and went to the airport to drop off my father who was headed overseas on a work trip. By the time she got back, there was water all over the kitchen floor. We called a repairman, only to be told the dishwasher would have to be replaced. A new one was ordered but it would not arrive for more than a month. As my mother had a tight schedule, I had no choice but to take on the task of washing dishes by hand after dinner.
I soon found myself faced with a pile of thankless dishes in the sink, urging me to get on with it and deliver on my duty. At the beginning, I was annoyed when doing the dishes. I was in a rush to be done with them since I had an endless list of things to finish as a high school student taking a tough course load. Gradually, I realized that, for about 15 minutes every day, I could slow down time and forget everything in the world as my mind, eyes and hands focused on a simple task that would always result in success.
We did finally get the new dishwasher placed. However, I continued to wash dishes by hand after dinner, perplexing my mother greatly.
Washing dishes by hand has been more educational than I could have ever imagined. I’m running around stressed most of the day. There are homework, projects, quizzes and tests competing for my attention and time. I’ve caged myself in a prison of my dreams and expectations, cut off from many aspects of the world.
However, standing at the same spot every day in front of the kitchen window washing dishes has allowed me to recover some of it. My mind has taken snap-shots of the changing view over the yard outside the kitchen window and reflected on the passage of time in this sliver of the universe in front of me.
4.Why did the author start washing dishes by hand?
A.His mother requested him to do so.
B.The old dishwasher broke down.
C.He attempted to please his father.
D.The new dishwasher was extremely expensive.
5.What did the author think of dish-washing originally?
A.It was a stress-reliever. B.It was stressful.
C.It was tough. D.It was a money-saver.
6.What does the underlined word “perplexing” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Offending. B.Discouraging. C.Puzzling. D.Inspiring.
7.What can we learn about the author from the last two paragraphs?
A.He regretted devoting too much time to study.
B.He decided to give up some of his goals.
C.He desired to move to a house with a larger yard.
D.He grew more sensitive to the beauty of nature.
根据第一段中“We called a repairman, only to be told the dishwasher would have to be replaced. A new one was ordered but it would not arrive for more than a month. As my mother had a tight schedule, I had no choice but to take on the task of washing dishes by hand after dinner.(我们电话联系了维修人员,却被告知必须更换洗碗机,新的已预订但是至少要一个月才能到位。我的母亲日程满满,我别无选择只能在每日饭后手工清洗)”可知,作者开始手洗碗是因为旧的洗碗机坏了。
5.细节理解题。根据第二段中“At the beginning, I was annoyed when doing the dishes. I was in a rush to be done with them since I had an endless list of things to finish as a high school student taking a tough course load.(一开始,我洗碗的时候很恼火。作为一名课业繁重的高中生,我有无穷无尽的事情要做,所以我急于完成洗碗的任务)”可知,作者一开始认为洗碗很有压力。
6.词句猜测题。根据第三段中“We did finally get the new dishwasher placed. However, I continued to wash dishes by hand after dinner, perplexing my mother immensely. (我们确实更换了新的洗碗机,但是我继续坚持饭后手洗碗筷,这perplexing我的妈妈)”可知,作者继续手洗碗的行为让母亲很困惑,所以perplexing的意思是“使困惑”,Puzzling意思一致。
7.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“However, standing at the same spot every day in front of the kitchen window washing dishes has allowed me to recover some of it. My mind has taken snap-shots of the changing view over the yard outside the kitchen window and reflected on the passage of time in this sliver of the universe in front of me.(然而,每天站在厨房窗户前的同一个地方洗碗,让我重新找回了一些。我的脑海中闪现出厨房窗外院子里不断变化的景色,并思考着我面前这片宇宙中时间的流逝)”可知,从最后两段中可以了解到作者对自然之美变得更加敏感。

It’s a familiar tale these days: A Canadian quits his exhausting day job to pursue a dream, like opening a coffee shop, and finds freedom and joy. My story is similar, with a twist (转折).
It began in 2016, during the last semester of my philosophy undergraduate, when I decided to become a writer after being inspired by modern and classic works I was reading. I earned a journalism master’s from New York University and worked at Toronto Life magazine. I had some success, interviewing important figures and even writing for The New York Times. But behind the scenes, I was constantly stressed and struggling to make rent.
Then things changed. Last summer, a friend invited me to coach a small group of 11-year-old volleyball players. I always loved volleyball but had pushed it aside because I thought it couldn’t be a career. I jumped at the chance. Every morning, I trained the kids on passing, setting and serving. I had gone from interviewing people to playing volleyball in the park with kids. Surprisingly, I felt alive again.
Volleyball reawakened a spirit of playfulness in me. I didn’t have to sit behind a computer all day. The parents paid me fairly and on time, and my work could not be replaced by artificial intelligence. So I went all in. I found gym space, started running my own clinics and created an organization called Super Volley.
Things are going decently well so far. Like many small businesses, I’m at the mercy of a rising cost of living, a harsh (严峻的) economy and consumers who might devote their Saturdays to something else. But I’ll keep going because this volleyball thing rewards me in ways that go well beyond money or journalistic fame.
8.Why does the author mention a familiar tale at the very beginning?
A.To show his big success directly.
B.To introduce his similar but different story.
C.To explain why he quits his day job.
D.To praise the trend of chasing dreams.
9.What challenge arose during the author’s writing career?
A.He failed to interview famous people.
B.He had no chance to do significant work.
C.He suffered constant stress and rent trouble.
D.He couldn’t afford the gym training cost.
10.What benefit does the author’s new job have according to Paragraph 4?
A.It cannot be replaced by technology.
B.It enables him to earn a huge fortune.
C.It brings more creative possibilities.
D.It earns him more public attention.
11.What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph?
A.He still questions if coaching is a long-term career.
B.He is sure his volleyball business will grow soon.
C.He sometimes regrets quitting his former writing job.
D.He is practical and gains deep joy from his own work.
【答案】8.B 9.C 10.A 11.D

My story is similar, with a twist
根据第二段“But behind the scenes, I was constantly stressed and struggling to make rent.(但在幕后,我压力很大,一直在为房租而挣扎。)”
根据第四段“The parents paid me fairly and on time, and my work could not be replaced by artificial intelligence.(家长们按时公平地付给我报酬,而且我的工作不能被人工智能取代。)”
根据最后一段“Things are going decently well so far. Like many small businesses, I’m at the mercy of a rising cost of living, a harsh (严峻的) economy and consumers who might devote their Saturdays to something else. But I’ll keep going because this volleyball thing rewards me in ways that go well beyond money or journalistic fame.(到目前为止,事情进展得还算顺利。像许多小企业一样,我受制于不断上涨的生活成本、严峻的经济形势以及可能将周六花在其他事情上的消费者。但我会继续下去,因为这项排球运动给我的回报远远超出了金钱或新闻界的名望。)”可知,作者清楚创业的现实困难,并且从自己的工作中获得了深深的快乐。

Scientists have known that sperm whales communicate through patterns of clicks known as codas. These sounds are not random. Instead, they form complex sequences that whales use when interacting with members of their family groups. Yet the real meaning of these signals has long remained a mystery. Hidden within the ocean’s depths is a communication system far more complicated than researchers once imagined. Many experts believe that such a system may even include something similar to a basic language, but no one has been able to fully figure it out so far.
To solve this long-standing puzzle, scientists have turned to AI for help. By feeding thousands of whale recordings into advanced computer models, scientists have begun to detect patterns that human ears alone could never recognize. Similar to the way large language models learn patterns in human speech, AI systems can analyze enormous collections of whale codas and identify repeating structures within them. In early experiments, these systems were able to predict the type of coda and even identify which whale produced it with remarkable accuracy.
Inspired by these results, researchers launched Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), an international collaboration bringing together marine biologists, linguists, engineers and computer scientists to interpret the communication system of sperm whales. By combining underwater recording devices with powerful AI models, the team hopes to map the hidden structure of whale sounds and eventually understand how whales exchange information.
If successful, the project could transform how humans understand animal intelligence. Not only might it reveal that whales possess a complicated communication system, but it could also show that language-like structures exist far beyond the human world. In this sense, AI may become more than a technological tool. Properly used, it could help humans listen, perhaps for the first time, to the voices of another species.
12.What can we learn about sperm whales’ codas from paragraph 1?
A.They can only be heard in the deep ocean.
B.They are simple signals for daily communication.
C.They carry meanings that are waiting to be explained.
D.They differ greatly from other sea animals’ sound patterns.
13.What does paragraph 2 mainly focus on?
A.The importance of large language models.
B.The process of collecting whale recordings.
C.The role AI plays in studying whale codas.
D.The achievements in whale protection research.
14.What does the author say about Project CETI?
A.It has solved the mystery of animal intelligence.
B.It aims to make whale research a separate discipline.
C.It helps develop advanced underwater recording devices.
D.It may improve human understanding of animal language.
15.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.AI: A Bridge to Sperm Whales’ Hidden Communication.
B.Sperm Whales: Creatures with Special Languages.
C.New Discoveries in Ocean Ecosystem Protection.
D.International Efforts to Study Ocean Animals.
【答案】12.C 13.C 14.D 15.A

“Becoming Chinese” is catching on for some practical reasons. Take electric vehicles (EVs) for example, 37 have evolved into mobile centers for AI-powered digital living. Millions of people around the world now drive EVs 38 (design) in China.
“Becoming Chinese” also means 39 (hug) Chinese philosophy of life: practical yet poetic, smart yet kind. Platforms like Xiaohongshu offer simple grounded advice on everyday well-being 40 spread these ideas through actions — a breathing exercise, a zero-waste tip, or a simple skincare routine.
Lately, this mindset (思维方式) 41 (adopt) by many in their daily routines as they take up small Chinese habits 42 (refresh) themselves: doing a few minutes of Ba Duan Jin in the morning, drinking warm water or goji berry tea during 43 day, and wearing slippers at home — instead of going barefoot.
In a complex world, “being Chinese” offers ways to live better to breathe cleaner, move with more calm, and think with 44 (great) clearness. In this sense, the Chinese way of life has become a new kind of global public good. Some call it “Chinamaxxing”: the Chinese atmosphere meets a global taste for 45 (sustainable), balance, and co-creation. And in that meeting, mutual inspiration emerges.
36.by 37.which 38.designed 39.hugging 40.and 41.has been adopted 42.to refresh 43.the 44.greater 45.sustainability

One possible version:
Dear fellow students,
Recently, have you ever felt upset seeing the lawns trodden and rubbish scattered in our green belts? Such thoughtless acts spoil the tidy look of our campus, making it less inviting.
Our green spaces are more than just plants — they’re our shared “breathing room”. To protect our green home, we can take small steps. First, stick to the paths and avoid walking on the grass. Second, take our trash away, throw rubbish into bins and tell our friends to do the same.
Let’s cherish every blade of grass and clean corner. Small acts add up! Together, we can keep our campus green and lovely.

47.I was never tidy. For years, I would excuse my mess as a sign of creative genius. Yet, when I arrived at senior high, I hadn’t come up with any impressive reasons for my big mess. And my roommate, Kim, did not seem to appreciate their contribution to my bright future.
From the very first day, it was clear that we were opposites. Kim was extremely organized. She labeled everything, and every item she owned had a place — and more impressively, it always stayed there. However, my table was a mess. My pencil holder was always filled with junk — paper, broken rubber and random things. There was maybe one pen, but I certainly didn’t put it there.
Neither of us was innocent. Neither of us was willing to give in. She got neater, and I got messier. She would complain about my dirty clothes, and I would complain about the smell of her cleaning spray. She would push my clothes to one side; I would leave one of my books on her tidy desk.
It finally exploded one evening. Kim came into the room and froze. One of my muddy shoes — how it got there, I still didn’t know — had somehow found its way beneath her bed. To me, it was just a shoe. To Kim, it was a disaster.
Her face tightened. Without a word, she bent down, grabbed the shoe, and threw it toward my side. The shoe missed me and instead hit my books, sending them crashing to the floor. I immediately yelled about her rudeness. She fired back similar frustrations and soon we both ended up rushing to the door, trying to be the first to leave.
I’m sure we wouldn’t have stayed another day in that room — if it hadn’t been for the phone call she received. Later that evening, after we had both returned to the room separately, I sat on my bed, angry and she sat on hers, also upset. Then the phone rang. Kim picked it up. Her voice softened, then cracked, and I could tell from her end of the conversation that her grandma had got a serious illness. Losing someone you loved was not something anyone should face alone. I knew that kind of pain.
When Kim hung up, she wouldn’t look at me. She crawled under her covers without a word. I could hear her quiet sobbing. What to do? I didn’t want to just walk over to comfort her (I was still upset), but I didn’t want to leave her either.

1.续写的词数应为150左右;

When I looked at the mess, an idea came to me. Deliberately, I began to clean. I remembered how Kim always took care of everything she owned and decided to do the same. I started by tidying up my desk and sorting through the scraps of paper. I took back the book I had carelessly placed on her desk. I picked up the socks and shirts scattered around and I made my bed. I even put some pencils into my pencil holder. Then, I swept the floor, including her side. I got so absorbed into the cleaning that I didn’t even notice that Kim had come out from under the covers. She was watching my every move in surprise, her tears dried and her expression full of disbelief. When I looked up and met Kim’s eyes, she smiled at me and said in a grateful voice “Thanks.”
After that evening, we lived peacefully through nice little actions. I woke up one morning to find my desk already tidied — Kim had done it silently. In return, I began taking the time to organize my things quietly, just to show her I was willing to meet her halfway. These small gestures became our new way of communicating. There was a silent understanding between us. The room still wasn’t perfect, and we still had our minor disagreements, but we had learned to live with each other’s differences. She taught me discipline; I taught her patience. She laughed at my “chaotic genius,” and I teased her about her “robot-like” habits. We came to realize that living together wasn’t about who was neat or messy, right or wrong. It was about understanding, helping, and holding on to each other, even when things got messy. And sometimes, that’s enough.

C
D

Around the world, an increasing number of people are accepting the idea of “becoming Chinese”. Of course, you are not “becoming Chinese” 36 birth or passport, but in practice.
