Immediately Mr Brown got home, he posted Adler’s story online. His story quickly spread online and touched many people. Many people left messages offering to help the Adler family. Some people wanted to help this sensible and responsible child by providing something necessary in life. Others thought they should let him enjoy a carefree life like other children at his age. Mr Brown wrote them all down, and he said to himself,“Why not get these loving people together to help Adler and surprise him?”With this in mind, Cervantes went into action.
One day, there was a knock at the door. Adler opened the door and saw a group of people carrying necessities and some fun toys. With tears in his eyes, he expressed his heartfelt thanks. Mr Brown then took out a ball and said,“Look at it. Familiar? Would you like us all to play ball together?”Adler replied excitedly, “Of course, thank you. I will study hard and repay you some day.” Mr Brown said, “You don’t have to pay us back. Just pay it forward and help those who need it in the future.” Adler smiled and agreed, and went off happily to play ball with the good people.

For Li Donglin, an 18-year-old senior high school student, this past summer was all about cultural relic sites. He joined the cultural relics census (普查) team in Huanghua, Hebei, becoming its youngest member. This census is part of the fourth national cultural relics census, which started in November 2023 and is set to end by June 2026. Its goal is to record and get a deep understanding of the conditions of immovable cultural heritage sites, including ancient sites and tombs across the country.
Li’s love for cultural relics began at an early age. Since childhood, he has enjoyed collecting things and now has over 100 cultural artifacts (手工艺品). Li also has repaired many artifacts, improving this skill by learning from all kinds of sources.
Despite his strong connection to ancient artifacts, this was his first time taking part in a cultural relics census. “I thought at first that the census was just about visiting sites and doing a simple investigation,” Li told Teens. However, the census work turned out to be quite opposite. In the investigation of cultural relics, measuring areas is a major task. To provide a better description of the ancient village site in Changguo Town in Huanghua, the team had to walk a long way to work out the site’s boundaries (边界). In the hot summer sun, Li made his way through overgrown corn fields to identify the boundaries in all directions, often walking up to 30,000 steps per day.
During these walks, he also needed to do some digging. “After digging, we examined the soil to find any signs of cultural relics,” Li said. “This step is key to making sure we get the boundaries right and don’t miss any relics.” Then, the team used special tools to work out the site’s total area.
“It is hard work, but being able to describe each site so that each site receives the most protection makes us very happy,” Li said.
24.What is the census team meant to do ?
A. To build a national register of cultural relics
B. To promote tourism in historical sites nationwide
C. To train young students in simple investigation skills
D. To identify the most valuable historical sites nationwide
25.Which statement about Li is correct ?
A. Experienced in relic census B. Good at designing artifacts
C. Fond of cultural relics D. Trained by experts
26. What can be learned about the census work ?
A. It required working in corn fields. B. It was far more demanding.
C. It needed simple measuring methods. D. It was finished with little effort.
27.Which of the following words can best describe Li according to the passage ?
A. Skilled and curious B. Patient and generous
C. Determined and hardworking D. Concerned and creative

Faced with the growing dangers of climate change, scientists are considering a new plan: moving endangered animals to new habitats far from their old homes. This method, called assisted migration (辅助迁徙), is designed to protect these animals from rising temperatures and habitat loss.
A recent example is the relocation of the Sooty storm-petrel, a seabird that usually lives on low-lying islands in Hawaii and Japan. Its main nesting(筑巢的) area, Tern Island, is only 1.8 meters high and is being worn away by the sea. Therefore, about 40 young birds have been taken 800 kilometers away to Oahu. The biologist Eric Vander Werf notes that climate change is making such actions increasingly necessary. It is hoped that these birds can return to their original living places if the environment improves.
This new way of protecting animals is gaining wider acceptance. There are plans to update the Endangered Species Act, making it easier to move the most threatened species to new places. Because of this, officials and scientists have identified some animals and plants that might be moved, including Florida’s Key deer, Karner blue butterfly, as well as some desert plants and lizards.
However, not everyone supports this approach. Some lawmakers argue that introducing new species into different ecosystems (生态系统) can create new risks, such as threatening native species or damaging the local environment.
The biologist Jason McLachlan points out that this is a major change in our means of saving species. He also believes that as global warming forces animals to move at an alarming rate, the traditional idea of what is regarded as a native species is not as clear as it once was. In the past, climate changes happened so slowly over thousands of years that plants and animals could fully adapt to the new environment, but today such changes are happening much too quickly for most ecosystems.
28. Why were the Sooty storm-petrels moved to Oahu ?
A. To follow wildlife laws B. To escape rising sea levels
C. To protect native species D. To return to original habitat
29. What can we know about Florida’s Key deer ?
A. They are at great risk. B. They are under good protection.
C. They have been officially moved. D. They have been settled in new places.
30. What can we infer from Jason McLachlan’s words ?
A. Animals fail to move fast enough.
B. People value native species highly.
C. Assisted migration will be well accepted.
D. The definition of native species needs reconsidering.
31.What is the text mainly about ?
A. Dangers of ecosystem changes B. Bad effects of rising sea levels
C. Rules of protecting local wildlife D. A new way to save endangered species
D
From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Most believe that music helps increase creativity, but an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that view. The study results were echoed by scientists from Lancaster University, and the University of Gavle, saying their findings show music actually weakens creativity.
To reach their conclusions, researchers had volunteers complete verbal(言语的) problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room, and then again while music played in the background. They found that background music significantly weakened the volunteers’ ability to complete tasks connected with verbal creativity. The team also tested background noises like those commonly heard in a library, but found that such noises had no influence on subjects' creativity.
The tasks were simple word games. For example, volunteers were given three words, such as dress, rise, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word connected with all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be“sun”(sundress, sunrise, sunflower). Volunteers completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while listening to two different types of music: rock music or light music.
“We found strong evidence of weakened performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions,”says co-author D. Neil McLatchie of Lancaster University. He and his colleagues find that music negatively influences the verbal working memory processes of the brain, preventing creativity. Also, as far as the library background noises having seemingly no effect, the study's authors believe that was the case because library noises create a“regular state”environment that doesn't affect concentration.
“To conclude, the findings here challenge the popular view that music increases creativity, and instead show that music, whatever type it is, is always a disadvantage for creative performance in problem solving,”the study reads.
32. The underlined word in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by .
A.doubted B.agreed C. challenged D. heard
33. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2 ?
A. Background music lowers people’s verbal creativity
B. Library noises greatly limit creative thinking
C. Quiet rooms are not good for creative tasks
D. All background sounds affect creativity
34. What were the volunteers asked to do in the study ?
A. To play music B. To create new words
C. To combine given words D. To connect words with music
35.What is the best title for the text ?
A. Music and verbal creativity B. Ways to improve creativity
C. Effects of daily background noises D. Benefits of different music types

Adler lived with his out-of-work mother and a younger brother in a small house in Durango.Like other boys of his age, the small golden-haired boy wanted to play with his friends and have fun. But fate had other plans. After watching what was happening at home, the boy decided to do something for his family. He picked up his only toy, a ball, and left the house with a clear purpose — to help his family.
Little Adler walked to the nearest store, holding his last toy in hand. He hoped he could sell it. His simple mind could only come up with this idea to help his mother, not knowing no one would buy the ball from him. While the little boy was trying to sell his toy on the street, a man named John Brown saw him. Curious, he walked up to Adler to see what was wrong with the little boy.
With tears in his eyes, the little boy said, “I just want to sell my only toy, sir. Would you like it?”When Mr Brown learned that Adler was selling his toy to help his family, he asked, “How much is it?” Adler answered, “I don’t want money, sir. I just want milk and bread for my family.”
At that moment, Mr Brown was deeply moved by how this little boy had such mature thoughts. While other children at his age were living a carefree life, Adler was worrying about his family’s financial problems. Without thinking twice, Mr Brown took the ball from the boy, gave him a hug and said, “Don’t worry, my boy. I’ll keep your ball for now, and I hope to play it with you one day.”
Mr Brown did buy milk and bread in exchange for his ball and sent him back home. The boy smiled widely and said, “Thank you so much, sir. I’m looking forward to it.”
