I was born in a small town in Pakistan called Quetta in 1980. When I was a little boy of about ten years old. I developed an interest in calligraphy. Back then we only had a TV channel with limited programs, One of the programs was about learning calligraphy. I was absorbed and spent several years learning different calligraphy scripts (笔迹) in the Urdu language.
After graduation, I came to Dubai, UAE. Falling in love with the architecture and high-rise buildings, I wanted to shoot the amazing beauty from different angles. So I bought a camera and learned photography, joined photography groups and attended workshops. After few years, I got bored of photographing landscapes and cityscapes (城市景观) 。
Seven years ago, while going through the photography blogs and looking through others’ works. I read the term called “light painting”, a photography technique that allows you to draw in space. I started experimenting with that and soon it hit me: why not bring back my passion for calligraphy using light painting technique? Since that day, I’ve been drawing light calligraphy. To achieve the best results, I decided to build the lights myself. The best part about my work is that they are not photoshopped. I prefer to get the results straight out of the camera. I don’t even turn over the images. To achieve that, I have to write in reverse (倒置) and that took a lot of practice to get it right.
Currently, I’m working on the idea of bringing abandoned places back to life, including buildings which have lost their charm (魅力) and are hidden in darkness. Through my photography, I try to use light calligraphy by writing a word that attaches a deep meaning to those places and telling stories behind them. In this way, I hope people will revisit these places and appreciate the real reason for their construction.
4. What can be implied from the author’s experience in Quetta in paragraph1?
A. He had access to plenty art resources.
B. He was fond of calligraphy channels.
C. He grasped scripts of many languages
D. He was willing to dig into calligraphy.
5. What made the author interested in taking pictures in Dubai?
A. Visual impacts of buildings. B. Remarkable urban planning.
C. Mysterious building stories. D. Unusual angles of architecture.
6. How did the author enhance (提升) the effects of light calligraphy?
A. By learning from others. B. By sticking to originality.
C. By beautifying his photos. D. By drawing in open space.
7. What is the author’s role in practising his current idea?
A. A writer putting down real thoughts. B. An educator spreading sound values.
C. An artist regenerating forgotten sites. D. A historian looking for ignored areas.

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), eight million tons of plastic waste is being poured out into the oceans every year. That’s the equivalent (相等物) of an entire garbage truck being dumped every three minutes, and the source of the problem—the world’s cities. In Amsterdam, a simple solution has been found that could stop up to 86 percent of plastic waste ever reaching the oceans—a barrier (屏障) made of bubbles (气泡).
The way the bubble barrier system works is basically that it is a tube placed diagonally (沿对角线地) on the bottom of the waterway. “The tube (管子) has a lot of tiny holes,” according to Phillip Ehrhorn, Chief Technology Officer in the Great Bubble Barrier. “We pump air through it, and the air bubbles will rise towards the surface. The plastics are brought to the surface with the air bubbles and then: with the natural flow of the river, towards one side of the river. Then the other part of the bubble barrier system collects and removes the waste.”
“Ship traffic is a key economic driver; we won’t be able to stop that. So, we would have to find a solution which would not affect all the other existing activities and the ecosystem,” Phillip added. The bubble barrier does exactly that. While it provides no block to water traffic and sea life can pass through freely, it also catches plastic waste of all sizes.
The Great Bubble Barrier is trying to work together with Amsterdam and local Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) to evaluate what the bubble barrier system is catching so as to carry out new policies and additional measures on land. In this way, plastics entering the water could be reduced in the first place. “Our next step is a bubble barrier within Europe and we, of course, want to move to Asia because we think we can make a lot of influence there,” said Francis Zoet, the founder of the Great Bubble Barrier.
8. What contributes to the invention of the bubble barrier?
A. Suggestions from the WEF. B. Construction of the waterway.
C. Large amounts of sea waste. D. Requests from the government.
9. What is the function of the air bubbles?
A. Creating tiny holes on the tube. B. Sending plastics to the surface.
C. Removing the waste in the water. D. Changing the speed of the river flow.
10. What does the underlined word “block” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Approach. B. Foundation. C. Brick. D. Obstacle.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Plastics entering the water will increase. B. The bubble barrier will benefit more places.
C. The NGOs will move to Europe and Asia. D. The city will evaluate the bubble barrier.

Intelligence could play a role, according to a Michigan State University study that investigated the early stages of learning to play the piano. Published in the journal Intelligence, the study may be the first to examine the relationship between intelligence, music talent and growth mindset (referring to whether students believe they can improve basic abilities) in beginner pianists.
“The strongest predictor of skill acquisition (获得) is intelligence, followed by music talent,” said Alexander Burgoyne, the leader of the study. “By contrast, the relevance (相关性) between growth mindset and piano performance is about us close to zero as possible.”
In the study,161 undergraduates were taught how to play “Happy Birthday” on the piano with the help of a video guide. There were striking differences in the students’ skill acquisition process. Some learned quickly, earning perfect marks within six minutes of practice. Others performed poorly at first but improved considerably later. By comparison, some seemed to have lost their motivation and others never figured it out, performing poorly throughout the study. So why did some students fail while others succeeded? To find out, the researchers gave the students some tests that measured things like problem-solving skills and processing speed, and tests of music talent that measured. They also surveyed their growth mindset.
Burgoyne said, “The results were surprising, because people had previously claimed that mindset plays an important role when students are faced with challenges, like trying to learn a new musical instrument. And yet, it didn’t predict skill acquisition. That said, results will possibly differ from those with greater skills.” He added, “Our study examined one of the earliest stages of skill acquisition. Early experiences can be important, but I would warn against drawing conclusions about skilled musicians based on our study of beginners.”
But applied generally, the study’s findings may be helpful in education. According to a recent review of mindset research, interventions designed to gain some achievement by encouraging children to believe they can improve their basic abilities may be fruitless.
12. What does the study by Burgoyne intend to find out?
A. How students can play the piano best.
B. Why talent is essential as a beginner pianist.
C. What matters most in beginner pianists’ skill acquisition.
D. What causes the difficulty for beginners to learn the piano.
13. What does the study show about basic skill acquisition?
A. It has little relationship with mindset. B. It requires outstanding music talent.
C. It requires fast processing speed. D. It depends on problem-solving skills.
14. Which of the following might Burgoyne agree with?
A. Learning musical instrument isn’t easy. B. Interventions are necessary for learning.
C. Mindset is key to one’s musical achievements. D. His finding can’t apply to skilled musicians.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Mindset—a key role in beginner pianists B. Intelligence—a key role in beginner pianists
C. Talent—a key role in beginner pianists D. Skill—a key role in beginner pianists
