Picking mushrooms is becoming more and more popular. Last summer, many visitors came every day to pick wild mushrooms at Cangshan Mountain in Dali. This damaged (破坏) the beautiful forests and the local environment.
Reporters find that many forest areas now show clear signs of damage from all the people walking through them. Some guides who lead mushroom tours don’t actually have proper training. They sometimes can’t give right information about which mushrooms are safe to pick. Many visitors simply dig up mushrooms, take pictures with them, and then throw them away.
On one day, more than 500 people come into the mountain through just one entrance. There are many paths (小路) where people search for mushrooms across the whole mountain. This searching and digging is harmful to the natural home where mushrooms grow.

Want to sleep under the sea? Planet Ocean has plans for an exciting underwater hotel, and it hopes to build them over the world.
The sun will shine down and provide light, because the hotel won’t be very deep under the water. The hotel won’t be large, with only 12 guest rooms and a restaurant. As you might expect, Planet Ocean wants to encourage people to eat less fish, so guests won’t find any on the menu. What’s more surprising is that the environment will be very quiet, so guests will have to imagine the sound of the ocean around them. They will almost get the feeling that they are swimming in the ocean.
The hotel’s design (设计), with clear glass walls, means guests will be able to see the sea and all the sea animals that live around, above and below them in their rooms. So guests will get great close-up views of the fish and other sea animals.
The hotel won’t be cheap to build and it won’t be cheap to stay in. But the designers are especially satisfied with the fact that it will be environmentally friendly. It will use electricity (电), of course, but it will produce (产生) its own, and won’t hurt ocean life at all.

Suddenly Jack had one of his dumb ideas!
Jack pulled the cover off the drain with a strong pole. “We could put some sticks down here,” he said.“Let’s see whose stick gets to the river first.”
So Jack and Kat dropped sticks into the drain. Then they ran to the fence. They watched the sticks shoot out of the pipe like arrows and splash into the river. “My stick was faster than yours!” shouted Jack. Jack and Kat couldn’t really tell whose stick was first. Then Kat had one of her dumb ideas. Kat got a spoon and a fork. “You can have the fork,” she said to Jack. Jack and Kat dashed to the fence. The spoon flew out first and splashed into the river. Jack didn’t like losing, so he said they had to do it again. Three spoons and forks shot out of the pipe. They disappeared into the murky river. The spoon was always first. “Find something else,” said Jack. So Kat found her mother’s old china dolls. Moths had chewed holes in their clothes and hair. “Dad can’t stand them,” said Kat. “He says they are just dust bags.” So down the pipe went the china dolls. “Mine won!” shouted Jack. “Down the drain” was a great game for Jack and Kat. The drain became a favourite place for them to dump things they didn’t want. Lunch not eaten, went down the drain. Dirty socks, went down the drain. Kat’s jacket that the kids all laughed at, went…down the drain.
The problem was that the socks and the jacket never made it to the river.
One day, Mrs Duggan was going out in her new shoes.Suddenly, she sank into the slushy ground. Then she saw water bubbling out of the drain pipe like a bath of ginger pop.
When Jack and Kat got home from school, they saw the digger and the mess. Their father was waving Jack’s dirty, wet socks and Kat’s muddy jacket! Mr and Mrs Duggan were really cross. “You could have killed the river,” they said. “Kill a river? How can you kill a river?” asked Jack.
“Rubbish in the river can take all the oxygen out,” said his dad. “When plants don’t get oxygen, they die. Then animals in the river die too, because they have no plants to eat.”
“It was a dumb idea,” mumbled Jack.
“A really dumb idea,” said his mum.
After that, Jack and Kat had to spend many weekends at the beach, picking up rubbish.
They picked up a heap of stuff-old shoes, plastic bottles, nappies, even underpants! Their mum, of course, found out about the dolls and she was mad! “They were antiques!” she said. Jack saw his father grin.
Maybe he thought that shoving those dolls down the drain wasn’t such a dumb idea!

Dear Editor,
I’m writing to tell you something about the “Zero Waste” activity in our school.
Since the beginning of this term, our school has s 61 this activity to reduce waste on campus. It has changed our d 62 life a lot. Now, every classroom has a special recycling bin for waste paper and plastic bottles. We no longer throw away the empty bottles, and we collect them to raise money for the wild animal protection centre.
Many students have changed their habits. We bring reusable lunch boxes to school, so we don’t use disposable lunch boxes anymore. We also bring reusable water bottles i 63 of buying bottled water. The food waste in the dining hall has also reduced a lot, because we take only the food we can finish. The teachers tell us not to w 64 any food, as every grain of rice comes from hard work.
We also have many interesting activities. For example, we have an “Old Things Exchange” every month. Students can bring their old books, toys and clothes to exchange with others, so these things won’t be thrown a 65 . We also have speeches to tell students the i 66 of protecting the environment and reducing waste.
Now, more and more students have j 67 the activity. We have learned that small actions can make a big difference. The school also plans to work with the community to spread this idea to more people. We hope that more schools will start s 68 activities to reduce waste.

Environmental experts explain that mushrooms play an important role in nature. They help break down (分解) dead leaves and branches, which helps plants grow. They also provide food for insects and small animals. When too many people pick too many mushrooms, it can damage the whole ecosystem.
Planet Ocean’s future designs include a moving hotel. It perhaps sounds like this will work in the same way as a big ship, but this is not true. In fact, instead of moving between countries, it will stay inside the area of a single country’s waters.

A.Its light will shine into the sea so guests can see the fish.

A.Swimming from the hotel into the ocean. B.Having ocean life in their rooms.
C.Enjoying a big meal of fresh fish. D.Being unable to hear the ocean.

C.It won’t use any electricity. D.It won’t do harm to the ocean life.
41.What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.The moving hotel B.The ocean life

Down the drain
The Duggans had moved into a new house. At the bottom of the yard, there was a river. Jack and his sister Kat liked to hang over the fence. They liked watching the leaves and sticks as they swirled past.
One day, Jack discovered the drain (下水道) pipe in the ground. His father said a drain pipe took rain water underground and down to the river.

A 69 for me, I will keep doing these things every day. I will also tell my family and friends to live a low-carbon life. Would you like to tell me some more good ideas to reduce waste? I’m looking f 70 to your reply.
Yours,
Li Ming
