Known as the “Father of China’s nuclear submarines (核潜艇)”, Huang Xuhua passed away in Wuhan on February 6th, 2025. His great spirit will always stay in our hearts.
Huang was born in Guangdong in 1926. When he was young, he saw the hard time of his country under foreign attacks (攻击). These sad memories made him decide to use his knowledge to make China stronger. In the 1950s, it was a very hard job when China started to develop nuclear submarines because there was not much technology or many resources (资源). But Huang was not afraid and he led his team to meet the challenge bravely. Without computers, they used abacuses (算盘) and rulers to do their work.
On December 26, 1970, China’s first nuclear submarine “Long March-1” sailed successfully. This was the result of their 12-year silent and hard work. Members hugged each other in tears. Team spirit shone brightest during a deadly test in 1988. To check the submarine’s safety, Huang kept on joining the group for a 300-meter deep dive—a very dangerous task. A young member said: “We trusted each other and pulled together, so we could overcome all the difficulties no matter how big they were.”
The team’s victory inspired those who came after. At a 2019 award ceremony (颁奖典礼), Huang said: “This honor belongs to my team.” Today, their story teaches us that great achievements are not from a single genius (天才), but from teamwork.

It means that when everyone works together, the result will be much better. Last month, my friends and I organized a charity event. We planned everything carefully and each of us took responsibility for different tasks. Some designed posters, some contacted sponsors, and others managed the event. Although it was a lot of work, we completed it successfully because we supported each other.
This experience made me realize that teamwork is the key to success. We should pull together whenever we work together.
