We should pay attention to the importance of synonyms (同义词). A synonym is a word that has the same meaning as another. If you find you are using boring words, look for interesting synonyms to take the place of them.

Kids need to learn about real money in a digital age. With the development of technology, more and more people pay online using phones or bank cards in daily life. This convenient way of payment has changed our life, but it also brings a problem: many young kids have little chance to see or use real paper money and coins.
Melanie Zhang works in Shanghai, China. Her daughter, 8, is in Grade 2 in a primary school (小学). When the girl does her math homework, she often meets many problems and asks Zhang for help. Today Zhang finds her daughter doesn’t know about paper money.
The girl knows about “yuan”, but has no idea of “jiao” and “fen”. For her, money is just numbers on the phone. That’s all her idea about money. “Before doing today’s homework, she didn’t see any paper money. When she started to know something, I remember that we always pay online in daily life,” Zhang says.
Zhang’s daughter doesn’t know much about real money, and she isn’t the only one. In a school in Wuhan, Hubei, the first-grade students don’t know what Renminbi is. They think they can cut paper money in half when they use it. This surprises their teacher.
Money matters in our daily life, so the ability to use money is essential to children. Where does money come and go? How do we use money wisely in life? Every child should get to know these little by little when they are young. Learning about real money, like paper money and coins, is a good start.
31. What problem does online payment bring to young kids?
A. They have no money to pay online.
B. They can’t finish their math homework.
C. They hardly see or use real paper money and coins.
D. They often ask their parents for help with money.
32. What do we know about Melanie Zhang’s daughter?
A. She knows nothing about “yuan” .
B. She is in Grade 3 in a primary school.
C. She often uses paper money in daily life.
D. She thinks money is numbers on the phone.
33. What do the first-grade students in Wuhan think of paper money?
A. It is made of gold. B. It is not useful at all.
C. It is the same as digital money. D. It can be cut in half when used.
34. What does the underlined word “essential” mean?
A. Important. B. Difficult. C. Interesting. D. Boring.
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The advantages of online payment.
B. Different ways to use paper money and coins.
C. The reasons why parents should give kids paper money.
D. Kids need to learn about real money in a digital age.

With the development of technology, smartphones are widely used in our life. As a result, people pay less attention to their handwriting, which has become a dying art. Some people argue that grading (打分) students’ handwriting is helpful. Others, however, say it is something to be admired but not given grades. Handwriting helps to improve the brain, but it’s not worth grading.
YES—grades make you work harder
Handwriting is important for students, both in their schoolwork and their daily life. So kids should be prepared. Also, studies have shown that writing by hand is better for the brain and helps people understand and memorize materials better. It requires them to focus on spelling and grammar because they can’t use spell-check. What’s more, if students are being graded on their handwriting, they’ll take this skill seriously. Even if they have poor handwriting at first, it can be improved with practice. Grading will only drive them to do better and feel proud of their progress.
NO—it’s a waste of time
Students shouldn’t be graded on handwriting because the content (内容) is more important, not what it looks like. We can learn from history that handwriting can’t always tell the potential (潜能). Scientist Albert Einstein and artist Pablo Picasso had great achievements, but look at their handwriting! Since students have already been under too much pressure, why give them one more thing to worry about? Besides, grading people’s handwriting would be unfair to students with physical problems. And it’s hard to grade fairly because no two people write the same way.
36. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refers (指) to _____________.
A. technology B. handwriting C. the grade D. the brain
37. There are advantages of grading handwriting except ______________.
A. paying attention to spelling B. reducing grammar mistakes
C. making the content better D. driving students to write better
38. We can know that Einstein and Picasso might have _________ handwriting.
A. clear B. poor C. pretty D. normal
39. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. People hardly write in similar ways.
B. The idea is less important than handwriting.
C. It is easy to give points to people's handwriting.
D. Students with physical problems are graded fairly.
40. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Handwriting is a Waste of Time B. Handwriting Makes You Work Harder
C. Should Handwriting be Graded? D. How to Improve Students' Handwriting?
第二节 阅读下列文章,完成1-5小题,其中1-4小题每空不超过2个单词。(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

When natural disasters like earthquakes or floods happen, knowing how to protect yourselves can save your life. Here are some important safety tips for you.
First, let’s talk about earthquakes. If you are indoors when an earthquake starts, don’t panic. The safest place is under a strong table or desk. Cover your head and neck with your hands to avoid being hit by falling objects. Stay away from windows, mirrors and heavy furniture (家具). Never use the lift (电梯), because it may stop working suddenly. If you are outdoors, move to an open area quickly, such as a playground. Keep away from tall buildings, trees and power lines.
Then, what should we do during floods? Floods often come after heavy rain. If you hear the flood warning, move to higher ground right away. Don’t walk or drive through floodwater. Fast-moving water can carry you or your car away easily. Do not try to take your things when escaping (逃跑). Your life is more important than anything else.
Remember, learning these safety tips is not difficult, but it can make a big difference when danger comes.
41. Knowing the ways to ________ can save your life if natural disasters happen.
42. You should use ________ to cover your head and neck when an earthquake happens.
43. When you get a flood warning, you must go to ________ at once.
44. Learning ________ can make a big difference when danger comes.
45. What will you do to keep safe if a disaster comes? (write two ways)

How to Manage Pocket Money
Dear friends,
As middle school students, we all get pocket money. It is important to learn how to manage it well.
When we use our pocket money, we should buy necessary things first, such as school things. We can also buy presents for our friends and parents on their birthdays. Besides, we can buy our favorite books. To develop good spending habits, we need to make a budget every month and try to spend less on junk food and useless toys. What’s more, we should think twice before buying anything. In my opinion, managing pocket money wisely is of great importance. It not only helps us form good habits, but also prepares us for the future.
Let’s start to use pocket money in a smart way from now on.
