“How was your weekend?” “Did you see the game on TV last night?” “Isn’t the weather beautiful today?” These questions and the answers to them are examples of “small talk”—the short, friendly conversations that people have with friends and parents.
Some people avoid making small talk at work. They think they shouldn’t talk about things that aren’t important for the job, or their partners will think they aren’t serious about their work. And some people just don’t enjoy making small talk about themselves.
But small talk is important! Knowing how to make small talk is a skill that can help you a lot. By making small talk, you show that you’re friendly and interested in your partners. You become a better team member. If you don’t make small talk, others might feel uncomfortable around you and think you’re unfriendly. Peter Harper, a manager at the Apex Company in the USA, says, “We always look for friendly workers who know how to communicate with each other and with our customers.”
Here are some tips for successful small talk. You can talk about safe topics such as the weather, sports, hobbies, TV programs and famous people like movie stars, singers, etc. You can also share some information about your family such as birthday parties and other family events, but don’t share very personal information like family problems. You can talk about the news too, but avoid topics on money, age, weight and so on.
Listening is an important part of small talk. Listen carefully to what the other person is saying and ask questions. Don’t just talk about yourself. And remember to smile! Making small talk takes practice. The more you do it, the better you’ll be at making small talk!
26. The writer starts the passage with some examples to ________.

C. introduce the topic D. answer some questions
27. Which of the following will Peter Harper probably agree with?
A. Most customers don’t like small talk.

C. If a person is good at communicating, he can be a good worker.
D. Good managers should often make small talk with their family.
28. According to the passage, which of the following is OK for small talk?
A. “How old are you?”

For most people, having something important stolen feels like a disaster. Robbie Pruitt admitted when his mountain bike was stolen last September, he got mad. But soon his emotions took a turn. After letting go of his anger, he found himself on a road to sympathy (同情) instead.
As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the pickings slim. The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work?
With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it to a local Facebook group. He offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair—again for free—and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike.
The day the post went live, Pruitt was excited about a list of 30 used bicycles. And this was followed by more than 500 posts from people who either had bikes to donate or that needed fixing soon after. By the end of the month, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 bikes for donation.
Pruitt tries to give his donations to struggling families. Beyond simply satisfying a material need, he has provided an opportunity for kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes.
In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of community. “Pruitt is certainly providing a service, but it’s not the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community. It’s the impact he made on people. All the neighborhood kids are spending a lot more time doing something that’s in their power,” Pruitt’s next-door neighbor Danny told The Washington Post.
29. How did Pruitt feel after he went to the bike shop?
A. He was angry at the theft.
B. He became eager for a new bike.
C. He would rather find his old bike.
D. He tried to put himself in the thief’s shoes.
30. Why did Pruitt put out a call?
A. To find his lost bike. B. To collect old bikes.
C. To raise some money for charity. D. To advertise his bike repair shop.
31. Which of the following best describes Robbie Pruitt?
A. Caring and inspiring. B. Considerate and loyal.
C. Outgoing and brave. D. Responsible and humorous.
32. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Robbie Pruitt: A Bike Repairman
B. A Bike Thief: A Trouble Maker
C. A Kind Act: Inspiration From A Stolen Bike.
D. Bike Shopping: An Unexpected Adventure.
【答案】29. D 30. B 31. A 32. C
【解析】
【导语】本文讲述了Robbie Pruitt的自行车被盗后,他没有陷入愤怒,反而通过免费修自行车、收集旧车捐赠给有需要的人,将一次不幸转化为善意的故事。
【29题详解】
根据第二段中“The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who'd taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work?”可知,Pruitt去自行车店后发现选择有限,从而开始换位思考,体谅小偷可能面临的困境。
【30题详解】
根据第三段中“Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair—again for free—and then donate...”
(Inspiring)

Nowadays, young people are more and more interested in Chinese traditional culture. Zhang Lingling is one of them.
Every month, Zhang Lingling holds a party with her friends. It has become a regular and exciting event for them. At the party, all the people wear Hanfu—a type of dress worn by the ancient Han people. The Hanfu they choose is often in beautiful colors and special designs. And they sing songs along to traditional instruments or inspired by ancient poems.
“I’m really interested in clothes, songs and games based on traditional culture. I’m buying the items not just because they are Chinese — they just satisfy my aesthetic (审美) needs,” Zhang Lingling told China Daily.
Like Zhang, there are many young people who are attracted by Hanfu. A report given out by a popular Chinese short-video platform in February shows that over 10 million of the platform’s users loved videos showing Hanfu.
Many Hanfu are made by professional traditional clothing workshops. Caoxian is the most famous place for making Hanfu in China. Nearly 100,000 people are working in the Hanfu factories. Its online Hanfu sales reached 57.9 billion yuan.
When people wear Hanfu, they seem to travel back in time. It is not only a kind of clothing but also a symbol of national identity (身份) and cultural heritage (遗产). Nowadays, more and more young people like to wear Hanfu in festivals or cultural activities. It makes the ancient Hanfu culture come alive again and wearing Hanfu is the best way for young people to show their national identity. They want to tell the world who they are, and they are willing to show Chinese traditional culture to the world.
While some prefer inheriting (继承) traditional Chinese culture, others are putting changes on it to be closer to the young generation. 【答案】例文:
AI—a Double-edged Sword
With the development of AI technology, tools like DeepSeek and Doubao have become very useful in our life and study.
On one hand, AI brings great convenience to teenagers. It helps us solve difficult problems quickly, learn new knowledge efficiently, and even practice our spoken English. It makes learning more interesting and saves us a lot of time. On the other hand, AI also causes problems. Some teenagers depend too much on AI tools, using them to finish homework directly without thinking. This makes them lazy and lose the ability to think independently.
In my opinion, teenagers should use AI properly. We should use it as a helper, not a replacement. We need to think first before turning to AI, and use it to improve ourselves, not to be lazy. Only in this way can we make the best of AI.

A. give his opinion B. answer the topic
C. introduce the topic D. answer some questions

C. If a person is good at communicating, he can be a good worker.
D. Good managers should often make small talk with their family.
28. According to the passage, which of the following is OK for small talk?
A. “How old are you?”
B. “Who’s your favorite actor?”
C. “Why did your parents fight yesterday?”
D. “How much money did you get last month?”

Have you ever visited Longmen Grottoes (石窟) or Yungang Grottoes? Around 1,800 years ago, Chinese artists made statues in mountains. Over the years, these statues have gone through earthquakes, floods and wars. Now in the 21st century, however, they are facing an even bigger problem: tourism.

And to keep a balance between protecting relics and educating the public, some grotto sites have also created their own digital (数字的) museums.
A. Bad behaviour can cause harm to the grotto statues as well.
B. But when they are open to the public, the corrosion process speeds up.
C. Tourism has brought a lot of economic benefits to the grotto sites nearby.
D. The light from the flash can help us see the beautiful details of the statues clearly.

In clothing design, traditional Chinese clothes such as Hanfu have got a new look. Designers use new materials and modern styles to make Hanfu more beautiful. They may put on some decorations to make new-style Hanfu. Young people can wear these new Hanfu in daily life or at special events, which shows they like both tradition and fashion.
37. In February’s report, how many platform’s users loved videos showing Hanfu?
