“Mr. Mazzella, what’s the difference between a period (句号) and a comma (逗号)?” A student asked me the question in class when I worked as an English teacher. It was a bright morning, but inside I felt nothing but darkness.
When I looked at the textbook, I knew that even if I told this student all the different grammar rules about commas — when to use them, where to place them, he wouldn’t remember them. That day I was in a huge sadness because my mom had died just a few weeks earlier. I missed her so much, and I felt half-dead inside. All I wanted was to stay in bed to pull the covers over my head and disappear from the world, but my young family was waiting for me to support. I knew I had to take every work day I could.
I looked at the textbook again but couldn’t read it because my eyes were so full of tears. Then, all of a sudden, I had an idea.
“A period is the end of a sentence or a thought,” I said. “A comma, on the other hand, is just a short stop before the sentence continues.” When I finished speaking, my heart suddenly felt lighter. I smiled and thought of my mom continuing on somewhere much brighter and happier than where I was now.
That small moment of light helped me as I kept missing my mom in the months and years that followed.
Recently, I was reminded of it again when I saw this sentence in a book I was reading: “Death is not a period, only a comma.” Our lives are a story that goes on forever. Our time here is only part of it.

A. The student would become a good writer. B. The student would remember them easily.

A. He loved teaching grammar. B. He wanted to forget his sadness.
C. His young family needed money. D. His students were waiting for him.
( ) 33. What does the underlined word “lighter” in paragraph 4 most likely mean?
A. Sadder. B. Easier. C. Harder. D. Darker.
( ) 34. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the text?
A. The writer’s mother had been dead for a few weeks by that day.
B. The writer was an English teacher.
C. The teacher found the answer to the student’s question in the textbook.
D. The teacher thought of his mother after giving the answer.
( ) 35. What is the main idea of the story?
A. Grammar rules are hard to teach. B. A teacher should always be strict.
C. Death is the final end of a person’s story. D. Life continues in some way after death.

We often think only humans can feel and share many feelings. We believe that different feelings, such as happiness, anger or excitement, need a large brain for deep thought. However, scientific research suggests that bees can do this too. They can experience something similar to happiness and even pass this happy feelings to other bees in their group. Bee brains are much smaller, but they can still share feelings.
Scientists discovered that good feelings can spread among bees much like they do among humans. Scientists did an experiment to give one bee a surprise treat — sugar water. This made the bee feel happy. After having the sugar water, the bee became braver and landed on different kinds of flowers faster than before. Then an amazing scene appeared: other bees nearby also started acting more cheerfully, even though they didn’t get any sugar water. They, too, began to act actively and explore flowers with faster speed happily.
To make sure the bees weren’t just copying each other, scientists used something special to separate them. They found that bees could spread happiness just by seeing each other. They didn’t need to touch or smell.
This is called “happy feelings”. It shows understanding, which we usually see in animals with bigger brains. Before this study, we didn’t know that small invertebrates (无脊椎动物) like bees could do this.
This discovery is important. It shows that sharing different feelings is not just for big-brained animals. Instead, It is a key part of social life itself, even the insects with small brains.
So, when you see a bee flying in the garden, it might be spreading more than pollen (花粉) — it could be spreading joy!

B. It landed on flowers more slowly.

( ) 37. How do the bees spread their happiness according to the text?
A. By dancing. B. By touching each other.
C. By seeing each other. D. By playing together.
( ) 38. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Other bees nearby got sugar water too and then became happy.
B. The happy bee became braver after having the sugar water.
C. Scientists gave one bee sugar water to make it feel happy.
D. Bee’s brain is much smaller than human being’s.
( ) 39. What’s the correct order of the following sentences?
a. The bees nearby flew actively and happily.
b. Scientists separated the bees with special tools to find how they spread.

Good relationships with others can make our lives happier and healthier. But sometimes, we may have problems with friends, parents, or classmates. 41.

Second, learn to say “sorry” when you make a mistake. 43. No one is perfect, and accepting your fault is a sign of strength. A simple “I’m sorry” can make things better and help you keep your friendship.
Third, try to understand other people’s feelings. 44. Before you say or do something, think about how the other person might feel. This helps you act with kindness rather than anger. Control your feelings when you are upset. When you feel angry or sad, don’t shout or say bad words. Take a deep breath, calm down, and then talk about the problem in a kind way. Staying calm shows respect and helps solve problems more easily.
