① Living in China has made me realize how convenient life can be. It is much better than I ever thought, and it has completely changed my way of life.
② The moment I came to this country, a wave of pleasant surprise washed over me. The public travel system, especially in big cities, is great. The underground networks cover almost every part of big cities. People can get to where they want to go much faster. High-speed trains are another example of China’s wonderful transport system. Travelling between cities by high-speed train takes only a few hours, even for trips that used to take days.
③ Another great thing that stands out in China is the availability (可用性) of services. If my bike is broken and needs a repairman, or if I want to buy some daily things, I just need to make a phone call or tap on my smartphone. Since everything is available online, I no longer have to go far to the supermarket. Even late at night, I can get food sent to my door in just 30 minutes. It is one of the key reasons I have stayed in China for so long.
④ What’s more, China’s convenience doesn’t only lie in the availability of services, but also in their user-friendliness. For example, the apps that I use for travelling are easy to use, even for people who are not good at technology. Everything, including payment methods, is simple and direct. This makes it easy for everyone to get things done without difficulties. Even my 70-year-old grandma can use the apps to pay for things when she visits me.
⑤ The convenience in China has helped me get more things done. I can save a lot of time on daily tasks and use it to do more meaningful things. I think that with technological progress and the development of basic services, life in China will become more convenient in the future.

By the Christmas tree sat a nice mini bike. For a short moment, Lily was filled with great excitement. She couldn’t imagine anything better than getting that bike. Then, she saw a baby doll sitting on the sofa.
Then she knew that the mini bike is her brother Tommy’s and that doll would be hers. It was always like this. Tommy always got cool things: skateboards, science tools. The mini bike was just the latest cool thing. Lily always got the boring gifts: a set of toy cooking tools, nice dresses, beautiful hair bands. They were amazing for other girls, but she didn’t like them at all. To Lily, this doll seemed unusually boring again.
Tommy had seen that mini-bike in the front window of Moore’s Bike Shop, but hadn’t Lily too? Tommy had asked for the bike and had said it was the only thing he wanted for Christmas. Although Lily had the same thought, she was afraid to say it out loud. She was a shy girl, even in front of her family.
Tommy’s eyes grew wide at the bike. He knew it was his — no doll for him. He ran into his parents’ room and jumped up and down on the bed, “Thank you, Dad! Thank you, mum!”
At the same time, Lily walked into the other room silently. She was upset and a bit angry. It took a while for anyone to realize she was missing.
“What’s wrong, Lily?” Dad asked nicely. “Did you see your pretty doll?”
“I saw it,” she said unhappily.
“What’s wrong, honey? You won’t believe how long your father waited in line to buy that doll! It was nearly 30 minutes.” Mum said.
Silence. Lily’s mouth was fixed. Her face was pale. “Oh, Mum, you know Lily is never excited by presents!” her brother laughed. “Come out and watch me ride!” And so they did.
However, Lily made a decision after a while. She needed to speak out what she really thought. Then, she took a deep breath, walked quickly outside..
8. Why was Lily unhappy when seeing the gifts?
A. Because she was never interested in gifts.
B. Because she liked the bike but it was not hers.
C. Because she didn’t know which gift to choose.
D. Because she couldn’t get the bike she asked for.
9. Why did Lily’s parents buy her a baby doll?
A. Because they didn’t care about her.
B. Because they loved her brother more.
C. Because Lily’s brother told them to do that.
D. Because they thought Lily was like the other girls.
10. What would Lily most probably do at the end of the story?
A. She would watch her brother riding the bike.
B. She would leave home because she was angry.
C. She would tell her family that she wanted the bike.
D. She would ask her brother to exchange Christmas gifts.
11. What’s the best title for this text?

Reading is a very important skill for school and for later life. It helps people build vocabulary and develop communication skills, and it also increases general knowledge. Reading can be fun and relaxing. But recent studies show a problem. Although children are reading more books than before, their enjoyment and understanding of what they read are falling. This suggests that reading ability cannot grow well without real interest.
A 2025 report found that the number of books children read had increased by about 25%, yet only 43% said that they enjoyed reading. Research from World Book Day showed that more than one third of children are not allowed to choose what they read for pleasure, and one fifth of them feel judged for their choices. When children lose the chance to choose, reading becomes less enjoyable. However, many studies show that children who read for pleasure achieve better school grades and have more job choices later.
Some adults believe that children should be guided because many middle school students choose books at primary level, which may reduce their reading ability. Some adults also worry that difficult books might make children give up, or that unsuitable books might upset them. For this reason, these adults think that they should pick reading materials.
Adult guidance can be helpful, but choosing everything for children can make reading feel like homework. Children often know when a book is too easy, too hard or simply not enjoyable. Allowing them to choose helps them build confidence and develop a long-term reading habit. Therefore, reading ability grows best when it is supported by interest and personal choice.
12. What problem do recent studies show about children’s reading?
A. Children read fewer books than before.
B. Children enjoy reading less than before.
C. Children read less but understand and enjoy more.
D. Children read more but understand and enjoy less.
13. How does the writer explain the problem in Paragraph 2?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By telling true stories. D. By comparing choices.
14. Why do some adults want to guide children’s reading choices?
A. Because they think they may help choose enjoyable books.
B. Because they believe children can develop good reading habits.
C. Because they think children may choose books at an unsuitable level.
D. Because they believe they can encourage children’s interest in reading.
15. What is the writing purpose of the text?
A. To introduce the importance of reading more books.
B. To explain why adult-chosen books can be helpful to children.
C. To discuss how reading for pleasure benefits teenagers’ future.
D. To show that interest and choice can help improve reading ability.
