AI and Energy: Is AI Increasing Power Demand?
AI consumes large amounts of energy: a single ChatGPT response uses around 10 times the electricity of a Google search, and its more than 400 million weekly active users increase demand. DeepSeek claimed higher energy efficiency but also faced doubts, keeping AI’s energy use a persistent concern. Here is the daily energy comparison between ChatGPT and Google search.
Operation Type
Energy Per Search
Hourly Energy Use
ChatGPT Response

Given the energy consumption, AI adoption won’t slow as firms view it as essential, so a smart strategy is needed to employ AI’s benefits while meeting sustainable goals. Luckily, industry experts are developing various solutions to address this challenge.
The AI-related energy risks have gained visibility, triggering public awareness and action. Yet focusing on energy alone cannot break the cycle of compounding environmental and operational pressures. “To address AI-energy risks and unlock long-term value, companies and investors must move beyond their narrow roles in the AI value chain. They should pursue strategies that create shared value by advancing business goals while benefiting society and the environment,” notes Lauren Smart in World Economic Forum.

For most of my life, I treated taste as fixed. There were things I liked and things I didn’t, and that was that.
Sticking to that belief had left me in a bit of a standstill. I stopped making time for new hobbies or trying anything new. Salsa lessons? No, thanks. Interactive theatre? Not for me. But my automatic “no” to anything that “wasn’t my thing” only kept me trapped in the same routine of work, sleep, eating, and that left me feeling listless and a little empty.
So, in an effort to break the boredom, I began to question whether my taste was fixed at all, or whether it might be something I could train. I had read that children need 8 to 15 tries to accept a new food. Why shouldn’t the same principle apply to social activities for adults?
I started small. When a friend invited me to a book club, I resisted the urge to dismiss it, despite my longstanding dislike of reading due to dyslexia But I went anyway. I listened to the first book on audio book and, to my surprise, enjoyed the discussion and the people. Now I spend mornings reading. Then came music and performance: jazz clubs, line dancing, contemporary performance — all things I had previously ignored.
Trying things you thought you wouldn’t enjoy, I found, became oddly addictive. I didn’t love everything straight away, but I stopped saying no before I had even begun. Most recently, I tried out my local library’s chess club. I was easily 30 years younger than everyone else, but that didn’t matter. Honestly, there was nothing quite like being wiped off the board by someone who had been playing since before your parents met. I felt more of a connection with others there than at any organized twenty-something social event I’ve attended.
Putting “try something new” in my diary once a week broke up the work-commute-collapse cycle I had accidentally built my life around. Now I simply count to five, approach the friendliest-looking person with a “hello”, and any initial awkwardness quickly fades. Next week? Who knows. Maybe magic lessons. Maybe life drawing. Maybe both.
4. How did the author’s fixed idea affect her?
A. It simplified her daily routine.
B. It left her more time for work.
C. It flattened her life into dullness.
D. It spared her unwanted socializing.
5. Why did the author accept her friend’s invitation to a book club?
A. To make a conscious shift in her life.
B. To revisit a former interest in reading.
C. To meet her friend’s repeated requests.
D. To occupy a blank in her personal calendar.
6. How did the author feel when losing the chess game?
A. Totally relieved. B. Slightly puzzled. C. Rather embarrassed. D. Somewhat delighted.
7. What message does the author try to convey?
A. Learn to say no. B. Break out of your shell.
C. Look before you leap. D. Let go of the past.

If you ever wondered what your child’s drawings might reveal, keep on reading.
Imagine how you would feel when looking at Earth from outer space. That feeling of awe is what we call the Overview Effect, a feeling most astronauts report when they return to Earth, described as a transformative experience that changes their view of our planet and humanity — an experience that builds a sense of unity, interconnectedness, and responsibility for Earth’s well-being. Recently, 40,000 children experienced a virtual reality (VR) space journey, becoming a unique group to have a chance to undergo this awesome feeling without leaving Earth.
To find out whether they had experienced the Overview Effect, we asked 100 children from this special group to draw self-images before and after the VR journey. In previous studies on adults, we found that after viewing a video to bring about the Overview Effect, participants tended to draw a smaller self. Apparently, going through the experience of awe and wonder makes one feel smaller, with a smaller drawing as the result. However, when we applied this method to children, we encountered unexpected results. The size of their drawings remained unchanged after the VR experience. This discrepancy led us to question: Were drawings by children simply not a good way to measure the Overview Effect? Did what worked for adults simply not work for children?
Upon closer analysis, we discovered that the key to measuring transformative experiences in children lies mot in the size of their drawings but in the richness of their content. Before the VR journey, the children’s drawings were simple, often showing familiar elements from their daily lives. After the journey, their drawings became far more insightful, filled with vivid descriptions indicative of what they had learned during the VR journey — for example, the Earth’s ecology. This discovery gave us a new way to understand children’s responses to transformative experiences.
I’m not proposing that we replace tests in schools with children’s drawings. But when it comes to transformative experiences, I’d recommend paying more attention to what children actually draw.
8. How can we describe the Overview Effect?
A. It expresses man’s view of Earth and humanity.
B. It helps people get deeper insights into the world.
C. It brings about awesome feelings of the outer space.
D. It is a transformative experience unique to astronauts.
9. What does the underlined word “discrepancy” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Problem. B. Progress. C. Doubt. D. Difference.
10. How did the children’s drawings change after the VR journey?
A. The self-images became larger. B. They described more details.
C. There were more familiar elements. D. They expressed richer emotions.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To suggest a way of measuring children’s learning.
B. To compare adults’ and children’s Overview Effect.
C. To analyse the role of VR technology in child education.
D. To describe the psychological experience of space travels.
D
You’re sitting in a busy café, trying to chat with a friend. The background noise makes it difficult to follow what he’s saying. It might seem like a hearing aid would fix the problem, but new research indicates that difficulty understanding speech in noisy places may also be linked to other aspects.
The researchers designed a study including participants aged 13 to 47. They first received a screening to confirm their clinically normal hearing. And then they were equipped with headphones and a computer program to attend to a primary speaker’s voice as two other “background” voices appeared. The primary speaker’s voice was always male, and the secondary voices were male and female or both male. Each voice stated a single sentence.
On the computer program, participants were tasked with selecting a colored, numbered box that matched the primary speaker’s statement, while the volume of the secondary voices gradually increased. Subsequently, participants had brief, standardized intelligence tests.
“We found a highly significant relationship between directly measured intellectual ability and performance in a multitalker environment,” said Bonnie, the study’s lead investigator. “A lot of brain processing contributes to successful listening in complex environments. You have to separate the streams of speech, figure out and selectively attend to the person you’re interested in, and part of that is suppressing (抑制) the competing noise characteristics. Then you have to understand from a language-related standpoint, coding each word. All these factors increase the mental load of communicating when it is noisy.”
The study directly addresses a common misconception that any person who has trouble listening is suffering from some hearing loss. “You don’t have to have a hearing loss to have a hard time listening in a restaurant or any other challenging real-world situation,” said Bonnie.
Individuals with lower intellectual ability could benefit from an assessment of the environments that may challenge their complex listening thresholds (阈值). For instance, this could lead to helpful classroom interventions, such as moving a child to the front row or providing hearing-assistive technology.
12. Why was the computer program used in the study?
A. To record different statements.
B. To create a complex listening challenge.
C. To monitor participants’ hearing problems.
D. To measure different age groups’ hearing ability.
13. What can we say about effective listening in noisy environments?
A. It quickens brain processing.
B. It indicates qualified hearing.
C. It is mentally demanding.
D. It calls for sharp hearing.
14. What is the potential practical application of this research?
A. Generating targeted adjustments.
B. Replacing traditional hearing tests.
C. Developing new types of hearing aids.
D. Improving the sound-related design of classrooms.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Young People Hear Better.
B. Listen in Noise: Brain over Ears.
C. Intelligence Shapes Listening Skills.
D. Background Noise: A Complex Problem.

At many points in your life, you may find that there are certain aspects of your personality that you wish you could change. However, making real and lasting changes to these traits (个性特征) can be extremely difficult. ____16____ Here’s how.
Learn new habits.
People who show positive personality traits have developed habitual responses that have stuck. Habits can be learned, so changing your habitual responses over time is one way to achieve personality change. ____17____ With enough practice, these new patterns of behavior will eventually become second nature.
____18____
If you are trying to become more outgoing, but you believe that your introversion (内向) is a fixed, permanent and unchangeable trait, then you will simply never try to become more sociable. But if you believe that your personal traits are changeable, you are more likely to make an effort to become more sociable.
Focus on your efforts.
Research has shown that praising efforts rather than ability is essential. Instead of thinking “I’m so smart” or “I’m so talented”, replace such phrases with “I worked really hard” or “I found a good way of solving that problem”. ____19____
Act the part.
Positive psychologist Christopher Peterson realized early on that his introverted personality might have a negative impact on his career. To overcome this, he decided to start acting extroverted in situations that called for it, like when giving a presentation at a meeting. ____20____ While he suggested that he was still an introvert, he learned how to become extroverted when he needed to be.
A. Challenge your self-beliefs.
B. Figure out your main personality traits.
C. Of course, forming a new habit takes time and effort.
D. The desire to reinvent yourself is surprisingly common.
E. Eventually, these behaviors simply became second nature.
F. Luckily, there are things you can do to make some changes.
G. By stressing your efforts, you may find it easier to experience real change.

Joyce is in the fourth grade and he joined the noisy children of his class as usual. “Children! Silence!” Mangat Madam suddenly entered the class. She announced next week would be math week. “I’d like each of you to work on a project. You could do it individually or in a group.” She instructed. “The topic for the project needs approving tomorrow and it has to be displayed at the math week exhibition. The best project will be awarded and there is also a surprise gift from my side,” she added.
Joyce, who is extremely good at math, sat in the corner seat of the first bench with Karan , an average. Karan asked Joyce if they could work on the math project together. Joyce replied in a prideful tone, "Ha-ha you want to join me. I think I will do the project on my own.” Joyce wanted to get awarded and the surprise gift all for himself from Mangat Madam.
After deep consideration, Joyce decided to work on a math magic quiz on the circuit board (电路板). The next day in school, Mangat Madam arrived in the classroom and all the children submitted their topics for the math exhibition. They all chose to work in a group except Joyce. In the following days, Joyce gathered all the materials for the project such as wires, bulbs (灯泡), a switch and a thin plywood board (胶合板). He worked out a few mathematical basic operations (运算) to be fixed on the board so that when the wire of the circuit touched the right answer, the bulb glowed. Joyce completed the project and was happy with the result.
The evening before the exhibition, while packing his school bags, Joyce again checked the project to see if it was working fine. Alas! All the lights that were to glow did not seem to light at all. Without finding the reason, Joyce was tensed up. However, he decided to take the same project to the school as he couldn’t change the topic at the last minute. Then came the next day, and everybody was fascinated by the exhibition.
It was Joyce’s turn to display his project.

根据第二段“But my automatic “no” to anything that “wasn’t my thing” only kept me trapped in the same routine of work, sleep, eating, and that left me feeling listless and a little empty.(但我对任何不属于自己的事物都本能地拒绝,这使我陷入了重复的工作、睡眠、饮食的循环之中,这让我感到无精打采,内心也有些空虚)”可知,这位作者的固执想法使她的生活变得毫无生气,变得枯燥乏味。
根据第三段“So, in an effort to break the boredom, I began to question whether my taste was fixed at all, or whether it might be something I could train.(因此,为了摆脱这种无聊的感觉,我开始思考自己的品味到底是否是固定不变的,还是说这或许是可以通过训练来改变的)”可知,作者接受朋友邀请参加读书俱乐部是为了有意地改变自己的生活状态。
根据倒数第二段“Honestly, there was nothing quite like being wiped off the board by someone who had been playing since before your parents met. I felt more of a connection with others there than at any organized twenty-something social event I’ve attended. (说实话,被一位早在你父母相识之前就开始玩的老手打得落花流水,那种体验真的无可比拟。在那里,我与他人产生的共鸣,比我参加过的任何一场专为二十几岁年轻人组织的社交活动都要强烈)”可知,当作者输掉那场棋局时,他当时的心情稍许感到高兴。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Putting “try something new” in my diary once a week broke up the work-commute-collapse cycle I had accidentally built my life around. Now I simply count to five, approach the friendliest-looking person with a “hello”, and any initial awkwardness quickly fades. Next week? Who knows. Maybe magic lessons. Maybe life drawing.

B 9. D 10. B 11. A
根据第二段“That feeling of awe is what we call the Overview Effect, a feeling most astronauts report when they return to Earth, described as a transformative experience that changes their view of our planet and humanity-an experience that builds a sense of unity, interconnectedness, and responsibility for Earth’s well-being.(这种敬畏的感觉就是我们所说的“概览效应”,大多数宇航员在返回地球后都会有这种感觉,这种感觉被描述为一种改变他们对我们的星球和人类的看法的变革性体验——这种体验建立了一种团结、相互联系和对地球福祉的责任感)”可知,概览效应帮助人们更深入地了解世界。
根据第三段“In previous studies on adults, we found that after viewing a video to bring about the Overview Effect, participants tended to draw a smaller self.(在之前对成年人的研究中,我们发现,在观看了一段视频后,参与者倾向于画一个更小的自己)”和“However, when we applied this method to children, we encountered unexpected results. The size of their drawings remained unchanged after the VR experience.(然而,当我们将这种方法应用到孩子身上时,却得到了意想不到的结果。VR体验后,他们画作的大小并没有变化)”可知,成年人画的和孩子画的存在差异,discrepancy意为“差异”,和Difference意思相近。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“After the journey, their drawings became far more insightful, filled with vivid descriptions indicative of what they had learned during the VR journey - for example, the Earth’s ecology.(旅程结束后,他们的画变得更有洞察力,充满了生动的描述,表明他们在VR旅程中学到了什么——例如,地球生态)”可知,在VR之旅之后,孩子们的画描述了更多细节。
根据最后一段“I’m not proposing that we replace tests in schools with children’s drawings. But when it comes to transformative experiences, I’d recommend paying more attention to what children actually draw.(我并不是建议我们用孩子们的绘画来取代学校的考试。但当涉及到变革性的经历时,我建议更多地关注孩子们实际画的是什么)”可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是提出一种衡量儿童学习能力的方法。故选A。

B 13. C 14. A 15. B
根据第二段“And then they were equipped with headphones and a computer program to attend to a primary speaker’s voice as two other “background” voices appeared. The primary speaker’s voice was always male, and the secondary voices were male and female or both male. Each voice stated a single sentence.(随后,他们戴上耳机,并使用一个电脑程序来聆听主要说话者的声音,同时出现另外两个“背景”声音。主要说话者的声音始终为男性,而次要声音为一男一女或两个都是男性。每个声音都说一句话。)”可知,研究中要使用电脑程序是为了制造一个复杂的听力挑战。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“A lot of brain processing contributes to successful listening in complex environments. You have to separate the streams of speech, figure out and selectively attend to the person you’re interested in, and part of that is suppressing the competing noise characteristics. Then you have to understand from a language-related standpoint, coding each word. All these factors increase the mental load of communicating when it is noisy.(大量的大脑处理过程有助于在复杂环境中成功地聆听。你必须分离出不同的语音流,找出并有选择地关注你感兴趣的人,而其中一部分就是抑制(干扰性的)噪音特征。然后你还需要从语言角度去理解,对每个词进行编码。所有这些因素都增加了在嘈杂环境中交流的精神负荷。)”可知,在嘈杂环境中有效聆听需要耗费脑力。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Individuals with lower intellectual ability could benefit from an assessment of the environments that may challenge their complex listening thresholds (阈值). For instance, this could lead to helpful classroom interventions, such as moving a child to the front row or providing hearing-assistive technology.(智力水平较低的人可以从对可能挑战其复杂聆听阈值的环境进行评估中受益。例如,这可以带来有益的课堂干预措施,比如将孩子调到前排座位,或提供助听辅助技术。)”可知,这项研究的潜在实际应用是进行有针对性的调整。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第四段“A lot of brain processing contributes to successful listening in complex environments. You have to separate the streams of speech, figure out and selectively attend to the person you’re interested in, and part of that is suppressing the competing noise characteristics. Then you have to understand from a language-related standpoint, coding each word. All these factors increase the mental load of communicating when it is noisy.(大量的大脑处理过程有助于在复杂环境中成功地聆听。
F 17. C 18. A 19. G 20. E
前文“However, making real and lasting changes to these traits can be extremely difficult.(然而,要真正且持久地改变这些特质可能极其困难。)” F选项“Luckily, there are things you can do to make some changes.(幸运的是,你可以做一些事情来做出改变。)”
根据前文“Habits can be learned, so changing your habitual responses over time is one way to achieve personality change.(习惯是可以培养的,因此通过逐渐改变自己的习惯性反应,是实现性格转变的一种方式。)” C选项“Of course, forming a new habit takes time and effort.(当然,养成一个新习惯需要时间和努力。)”承接了话题,同时提出“养成新习惯需要时间和精力”,呼应后文“With enough practice, these new patterns of behavior will eventually become second nature.(经过足够的练习,这些新的行为模式最终会变得自然而然。)”
根据后文“If you are trying to become more outgoing, but you believe that your introversion is a fixed, permanent and unchangeable trait, then you will simply never try to become more sociable. But if you believe that your personal traits are changeable, you are more likely to make an effort to become more sociable.(如果你正努力让自己变得更加外向,但你却认为自己的内向性格是固定不变、持久且无法改变的特质,那么你就永远都不会尝试去变得更善于交际了。但如果你认为自己的性格是可以改变的,那么你就更有可能努力去变得更善于与人交往。)”可知,该段强调“认为性格一成不变就不会改变,相信性格可改变才会努力改变”,因此,其核心为“自我观念对性格改变的影响”,即,A选项“Challenge your self-beliefs.(挑战你的自我认知。)”
【19题详解】
设空作为本段末尾,应起到呼应本段主旨,并作总结的作用。前文“Research has shown that praising efforts rather than ability is essential.(研究表明,表扬努力而非能力是至关重要的。)”说要把夸赞能力换成夸赞努力,G选项“By stressing your efforts, you may find it easier to experience real change.(通过强调你的努力,你会更容易实现真正的改变。)” 。
前文“Positive psychologist Christopher Peterson realized early on that his introverted personality might have a negative impact on his career. To overcome this, he decided to start acting extroverted in situations that called for it, like when giving a presentation at a meeting.(积极心理学家克里斯托弗·彼得森很早就意识到,自己内向的性格可能会对他的职业生涯产生不利影响。为了克服这一问题,他决定在需要表现外向的场合(比如在会议上做报告时)展现出外向的一面。)”举例说心理学家刻意在需要的场合表现外向,由此推知,设空句继续讲述他的事例,并强调其“成功转型”,以回应主旨。E选项“Eventually, these behaviors simply became second nature.(最终,这些行为已经变成了自然的反应。)”承接前文的举例,说明长期坚持后的结果,符合语境逻辑。

Making his way to the platform with heavy steps, Joyce placed all the materials for his project well and began to conduct his math magic quiz on the circuit board. He prayed in his heart that his lights would glow again but in vain. Hearing other students whispering to each other, Joyce’s face flushed with shame. He ducked his head and stepped back to his seat. And then Karan’s team showed their project. With joint efforts, they made it.
Finally, the teacher announced Karan’s team was the winner. All the children burst into thunderous applause on hearing that. Karan and his partners walked up to the front with great excitement. They were awarded and also received the surprise gift from Mangat Madam. After class, Joyce approached Karan, expressed admiration for his team’s project and congratulated them on their success sincerely. That day Joyce learnt the biggest lesson of his life: it is always better to work as a team rather than working alone.
