Kids who volunteer aren’t just helping their community. They might also be helping themselves. That’s according to a new research published in JAMA Network Open, in May.
Kids who participated in community service were 34% more likely to be in very good physical health than those who didn’t participate, the study found. And those who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered doing well in general. Kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have anxiety than peers who didn’t. The findings come from survey data provided by the parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States aged 6 to 17. About half of those parents reported that their kids did volunteer work.
Studies like this have limitations. Parents answered questions about their kids’ health and community-service activity. But a parent might not know if their child experiences anxiety or considers themselves to be doing well in general. This type of data also can’t prove cause and effect. It can only uncover connections. So it’s not possible to say for sure that volunteering leads to better mental and physical health. It could be that people in good health are more likely to have the energy or desire to volunteer.
But the data comes at an important time for youth mental health. In recent years, rates of depression and anxiety have risen among young people. More than 40% of high school students reported experiencing feelings of sadness or hopelessness. So there’s a clear need for accessible and effective mental health resources. Giving back to the community may be one such resource. And this study isn’t the only one to reach that conclusion. Previous research has also found links between volunteering and well-being among adults. Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. And it makes them feel connected to those around them. Generosity has also been shown to boost happiness and improve physical health. It might be a practice worth doing.
24. What’s a limitation of the study mentioned in the passage?
A. Surveyed parents’ lack of knowledge. B. The single research method.
C. Narrow geographical locations. D. Narrow study subjects.
25. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A. Healthy people are less likely to volunteer.
B. Volunteering surely leads to better mental and physical health.
C. Parents know their kids’ mental and physical health very well.
D. There is a relationship between health and community-service activity.
26. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. There are various mental health resources.
B. People of all ages will serve the community.
C. Serving the community will benefit mental health.
D. High school students are suffering mental health problems.
27. Which proverb best matches the passage?
A. He laughs best who laughs last. B. The rose is in her hand, the flavor in mine.
C. The longest journey begins with the first step. D. Treat other people as you hope they will treat you.
C
More than 1,000 meters below the surface of the oceans, everything is in darkness. For animals living there, vision is unrelated; acoustic (声音的) signals, instead, are how they find their way, communicate and search for food.
That way of life has come under threat from decades of increasing human noise. A leading cause is shipping. By one research, shipping-noise productions double every 11.5 years.
With about 90% of traded goods traveling by sea, quieting the ocean through reductions in shipping itself is not tenable. Efforts to make ships more effective, and therefore less polluting, are likely to reduce noise. But experts say those measures will not do enough to bring back quiet. That is why a range of technologies are being developed, which could allow humans and other animals to co-exist in the ocean.
Much of the underwater noise a ship produces comes from its propeller (螺旋桨). The noise produced by the propeller can travel thousands of meters underwater without losing strength, messing up the movements of whales, which use these frequencies (频率) to communicate.
One solution, being developed by researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC), puts flexible polymers (聚合物) into the metal propeller, allowing its tips to bend. “This movement prevents bubbles (气泡) from forming and therefore reduces the noise,” says Rajeev Jaiman of UBC. Based on experiments, the design could reduce noise by 20 decibels.
But shipping noise does not come only from the propeller. About 20% comes from the body of the ship, as engines work and the ship will let out continuous loud noise. At low speeds, this percentage rises.
MARIN researchers have experimented with a bubble screen positioned around the outside of the ship. These make a skirt of air bubbles around the back of the ship, where most machinery sits, preventing noise from spreading.
28. What does the underlined word “tenable” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Difficult. B. Workable. C. Time-saving. D. Cost-friendly.
29. How are whales influenced by ships?
A. Their habitat is polluted by ships.
B. Ships influence how far whales’ eyes can see.
C. Ships with giant bodies block whales’ swimming passage.
D. Noise from propellers messes up whales’ communication tools.
30. What is the key to reducing the noise from the propeller?
A. Metal polymers. B. Increase of bubbles.
C. Bent tips of the propeller. D. Flexible shapes of the propeller.
31. What is the suitable title for the text?
A. Structure of Ships Leads to Great Noise
B. Human Activities Affect Sea Animals Greatly
C. Experiments Are Conducted to Test Ship Performance
D. Noise-reducing Tech Makes Ships Affect Ocean Life Less
D
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. A transplant (移植) is the only treatment available to patients with end-stage heart failure, but there is a severe shortage of heart donors. That means there’s an urgent need to develop new ways to regenerate a diseased heart. Now the good news is that the world’s first complete 3D-printed heart, made using the patient’s own cells and materials, has been created in a lab.
Until now, success has been limited to printing only simple tissues without blood vessels (血管). “This is the first time anyone has successfully printed an entire heart anywhere,” said team leader Tal Dvir.
The 3D-printed heart is only about a third the size of an actual human heart and it doesn’t actually work. But it’s a groundbreaking step toward engineering customized (定制的) organs that can be transplanted with less risk of rejection. Dvir noted that scientists have managed to print a 3D structure of a heart before, but not with cells or blood vessels. The use of biological materials from a patient is key to successful engineering of tissues and organs.
Ideally, the biomaterial should possess the same biochemical and mechanical properties of the patients’ own tissues. This way, their bodies will be less likely to reject the organ, making transplants much safer.
While the 3D-printed heart is about a third the size of a human heart, the same technology can be used to print a normal-sized one. The team’s next step is to culture (培养) printed hearts in the lab and “teach them to behave” like real hearts. Then, researchers plan to transplant the 3D-printed heart into lab animals.
“Our results demonstrate the potential of our approach to engineering personalized tissue and organ replacement in the future,” Dvir said. “Maybe in 10 years, there will be organ printers in the finest hospitals around the world, and these procedures will be conducted routinely.”
32. What can be inferred from the world’s first complete 3D-printed heart?
A. It makes organ transplants risk-free.
B. It bridges gaps in biological organ printing.
C. It solves the donor shortage for heart transplants.
D. It has the same properties as natural heart tissues.
33. What does Dvir imply about the previous 3D-printed heart structures in paragraph 3?
A. They were ready for transplant to animals.
B. They matched the size of real human hearts.
C. They lacked cell-based biological components.
D. They contained complete blood vessel networks.
34. What will Dvir’s team do in the future?
A. They will first test printed hearts on humans.
B. They will focus on curing early heart failure.
C. They will change the biological materials used.
D. They will improve the heart’s functional performance.
35. What’s Dvir’s attitude towards the 3D printing technology?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.

Teaching financial skills early isn’t optional anymore, and it’s essential. Kids are surrounded by ads, digital payments, and peer(同龄人) pressure before they even hit middle school. If they don’t learn how money works now, they’ll pay for it later. ____36____
Introduce money early with simple concepts.
Start with the basics, let them hold money, count change at the store, and watch how things are bought. This isn’t about teaching lessons. ____37____ Show how a dollar bill turns into a snack. That’s the first building block of financial confidence.
Use a piggy bank to teach saving habits.
A piggy bank isn’t just a cute decoration. It’s a child’s first savings account. ____38____ The goal is to show how money builds up over time. Watching the bank fill up becomes its own reward(回报). It teaches patience. And it starts a habit that beats unreasonable buying before it even begins.
Open a savings account in the bank.
Go with them to the bank. Let them meet the teller. Make it feel like a milestone. This introduces interest, bank statements, and the idea that money can work for them, even when they’re not touching it. ____39____ The money no longer belongs to the parents. The kids start seeing it as their own, and that shift is powerful.
____40____
Teaching the difference between needs and wants is one of the most important lessons in money management. Use real - life moments like grocery runs or online wish lists. Ask, “Do we need this, or do we just like it?” Once kids start asking themselves that question, they build self-control. And that skill pays off for life.
A. It also gives them pride in ownership.
B. Help them tell needs and wants apart.
C. Explain why you don’t buy everything they ask for.
D. Let your kid store birthday money or spare change in it.
E. It’s about connecting everyday moments to how money works.
F. They begin to understand that money can be used to make life better.
G. Here are some simple, real-life ways to help kids get smart with money.

As we sped away from Konglor Cave on our trusty motorbike, the sun was beating down like crazy in central Laos(老挝) at midday. We could still feel the coolness of the cave on our skin as we made our way back to Thakhek, where we had a flight booked for the next day. But little did we know that just about fifteen minutes after passing a tiny town on the dust y road, something unexpected was waiting for us.
All of a sudden, our motorbike stopped working as a result of a broken fuel line and we found that we were in the middle of a deserted road with no people in sight. As the minutes dragged on and on with no cars passing by, panic started to set in. But we knew despair wouldn't help us get out of this mess.
Gathering our courage, we all agreed to take turns to push the motorbike back towards the town we had passed earlier. Since we didn't have a map and were unsure about how far the town in our intended direction was, this seemed to be our best option. It was challenging to push in that heat, our clothes sticking to us and dust getting everywhere. Our feet were killing us too. As we continued pushing the motorbike under the sun, the weight of the motorbike seemed to increase with each step.
The dusty road stretched endlessly before us, disappearing into the horizon (地平线). We had no choice but to hope that the town was not too far away. We encouraged one another with words of support and occasional laughter to lighten the mood. However, as time ticked by, it became obvious that this journey would test not only our physical strength but also our mental endurance. Doubts began to creep into our minds—what if there were no towns nearby? What if we ended up going in circles?
Just when we were about to lose hope, an old dusty truck appeared on the horizon.

As we left the repair shop in town, the truck driver refused to accept the money I offered him

B 29. D 30. C 31. D

根据第三段“With about 90% of traded goods traveling by sea, quieting the ocean through reductions in shipping itself is not …. Efforts to make ships more effective, and therefore less polluting, are likely to reduce noise. (大约90%的贸易货物通过海运运输,通过减少航运本身来使海洋安静下来是不……的。努力使船舶更有效率,从而减少污染,可能会降低噪音。)”可知,大约90%的贸易货物通过海运运输,可推理出想通过减少航运来让海洋安静下来是不现实的,也就是不可行的。故选B项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Much of the underwater noise a ship produces comes from its propeller (螺旋桨). The noise produced by the propeller can travel thousands of meters underwater without losing strength, messing up the movements of whales, which use these frequencies(频率) to communicate. (船只产生的大部分水下噪音来自螺旋桨。螺旋桨产生的噪音可以在水下传播数千米而不减弱,干扰了鲸鱼的活动,鲸鱼利用这些频率进行交流。)”可知,螺旋桨产生的噪音干扰了鲸鱼利用频率进行交流的工具。故选D项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“One solution, being developed by researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC), puts flexible polymers (聚合物) into the metal propeller, allowing its tips to bend. “This movement prevents bubbles (气泡) from forming and therefore reduces the noise,” says Rajeev Jaiman of UBC. Based on experiments, the design could reduce noise by 20 decibels.
B 33. C 34. D 35. A

故填to。
故填a/one。
故填be found。

“It is + 形容词 + to do sth.” 故填to change。
“there is little doubt that...” 故填that。

As we left the repair shop in town, the truck driver refused to accept the money I offered him
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Just when we were about to lose hope, an old dusty truck appeared on the horizon. A wave of relief washed over me when it stopped next to us. After we explained our situation with gestures to the truck driver, he rearranged items at the back of the truck for our motorbike. We squeezed into the truck and headed towards the nearest town. The ride was a bit rough, but it was filled with joy as we exchanged smiles with the kind-hearted driver. Upon arrival in town, he guided us to a small repair shop, where a skilled mechanic worked for nearly two hours until our motorbike worked smoothly again.
As we left the repair shop in town, the truck driver refused to accept the money I offered him. He made it clear through his gestures that he did not expect anything in return for helping us out. To convey my heartfelt gratitude, I pressed my hands together and bowed deeply in the Lao gesture of blessing. His eyes gleamed with joy as we bid farewell. From that day on, this motorbike has often reminded me that even in tough and uncertain times, there are always moments of unexpected kindness just waiting to be discovered.
