It was a Sunday night.I circled the neighborhood a few times, looking for a place to park my car. Finally, I found one to the south of my house. It was behind a late-model Jeep.I tried to back into the space, but I failed to see the angles clearly.I heard it before I felt it, the sound of plastic on plastic, like a sheet of sandpaper along the surface of a painted piece of wood.I got out of my car to check the damage. My car was unharmed. However, there were two distinct lines on the Jeep.
Then I noticed a woman, walking her dog, who was now photographing me with her phone.“Hope you're no planning to drive away,” she said quietly.Until then, I was annoyed with myself for having been careless, but now I was mad with her for taking my picture. How dare she, I thought. She had no respect for my privacy. And how dare she assume I would do the wrong thing? But soon I calmed down because I knew she wasn't entirely incorrect.I'd made no decision to drive away without leaving anything but I'd be lying if I said the idea hadn't flashed across my mind.It was dark, and aside from her no one was watching. It happens all the time—the hit-and-run in the parking lot.
We all have those desires to behave selfishly, to go against the social contract; it is not the thought but what we do with it that counts. It is the commitment to take responsibility, to care for one another, and to think about the greater good that makes this world a better place to stay. The choice to confess was left to me.I left a note with my name and phone number under the wiper blade of the Jeep.

A.Admit. B.Occupy. C.Disappear. D.Refuse.
27.What does the author intend to tell us through his story?

C.Avoid conflicts with others. D.Apologizing sincerely matters.

Graduate students struggling to survive the cost of living crisis have been advised by their university to take on extra work, such as fruit-picking, making deliveries, or selling make-up. PhD students in a research program from University of East Anglia (UEA) were sent the suggestion on Wednesday, setting off shock and anger among the research community. The research program aims to create “leaders in the science and sustainable business of the natural environment”.
Dr Addy Lowe, a former PhD student, said, “It's insulting and as if they don't really care. I think the reality is that PhD students aren't taken very seriously in this country. They are advising governments, at the forefront of tackling climate change and developing groundbreaking medical research. In reality, they are people with a lot of responsibilities.”
Prof Jenni Barclay, the director of the research program, said, “Firstly and clearly, we are sorry for any offence caused. The primary concern here is the cost-of-living crisis and its great impact on our research students. Action is needed soon. Many students are reporting extreme financial difficulties now.”
She said the intention of the suggestion “was to provide support as a temporary measure” while the university works out how to persuade UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), which oversees (监管) the most respected research councils and is the country's largest funder.
The UKRI has proposed a 2.9% rise in student stipends (助学金)next academic year, which is below inflation (通胀率). Graduate students have warned that could push them into poverty. The Natural Environment Research Council, which funds the UEA program, said the suggestion sent to students “does not reflect” its position. A spokeswoman added, “We do recognize the effect the increased cost of living is having on students and we are looking to see if we can provide further financial support.”
32.Why were graduate students advised to undertake extra work?
A.To enrich their learning experience.
B.To gain first-hand knowledge of life.
C.To help cover the rising living costs.
D.To learn how to volunteer in society.
33.How did the research community respond to the suggestion?
A.They felt rather hopeless.
B.They didn't take it seriously.
C.They couldn't agree more with it.
D.They felt very surprised and upset.
34.What could be the real solution to helping students financially?
A.Turning to UKRI for more fund.
B.Persuading PhD students to work part-time.
C.Taking out short-term bank loans.
D.Asking the government to control inflation.
35.What can be inferred about the proposed rise in student stipend?
A.It can hardly cover students' living costs.
B.It will compensate for the low inflation.
C.It will have a sharp increase next academic year.
D.It keeps students above the poverty line.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison's upcoming birthday party.
“But I don't want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don't like her!”
“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to party but you, you'll feel left out. It would be a big mistake not to invite Lucy to the party.”
“She never even talks to me!”
Dad sighed and moved down the aisle. “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn't know one single person in the school. She left all of her to get to know everyone.”
“No, it won't. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!” Madison shrugged (耸肩) and rolled her eyes.
“Madison, I'm done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!”
On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope (缰绳).
Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy.
The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.

第二节 (满分25分)
答案:
One possible version:
Lucy's present was the very last to be opened. Worrying that it would ruin the party, Madison grabbed the present unwillingly and tore open the gift-wrap paper. Inside was a delicately hand-made lead rope! Shocked, she widened her eyes, covering her hands over her mouth. “It's a lead rope for your horse Star. I made it by myself!” Madison pulled it out of the box and placed it on her lap, amazed at its beauty. Lucy added, “I heard you talking about your horse at school. That's when I got the idea to make you a lead rope. ”
Deeply moved by what she said, Madison held the lead rope tightly in her hands. It was, by far, her very favorite birthday present of the day. She suddenly felt so bad because she had been so mean to Lucy. With tears in her eyes, she blinked hard to fight them back, feeling a mixture of regret and gratitude. “Thanks so much for this lead rope. I love it! Would you like to join us and be our friends?” Lucy nodded cheerfully. Madison put her arm around Lucy's shoulders, both smiling. With applause and laughter echoing through the house, Lucy joined the other girls to enjoy the party.

(Text 1)
M:What are you going to do after class? To the library?
W:No, I'm going to buy some school supplies. What about you?
M:Oh, I'm going to the post office.
(Text 2)
M:Mum, can I take a taxi to school? I'm late for the school bus.
W:Why don't you go in your father's car?
M:It's in the repair shop.
(Text 3)
M:How are you getting along with your research paper?
W:I've finished all my research, but I haven't been able to organize it, so I haven't begun the paper yet.
(Text 4)
W:What kind of music do you like?
M:I enjoy nearly all kinds of music, especially country music and classical music. What about you?
W:I like rock music.
(Text 5)
W:Have you been to that new health club yet?
M:Yeah. I tried the running machine last week. It was great and there was a personal fitness instructor for each member. That's the best service offered by a health club I've ever known.
(Text 6)
M:Lovely day, isn't it?
W:Hmm, yes, it's really warm, and it's supposed to get warmer. Spring is not far away.
M:Yes, that's true. However, I'm always a little sorry to see winter go.
W:Really?
M:Well, I love skating. In fact, I used to teach skating for a living.
W:Oh, that seems exciting. So what do you do now?
M:I work in Bank of America. How about you?
W:I work at a radio station. I'm just visiting here for the wedding.
(Text 7)
W:Hey, Peter, I'm sorry!
M:Hi, Diana, what's wrong?
W:We were going to Hong Kong this weekend, but I'm afraid I can't go.
M:How come?
W:I have a really big geography test and I have to study for it.
M:We can go next week instead.
W:No, I don't want to ruin your weekend. You go ahead and please take the book I bought to my friend Sally. Tell her I have to study all weekend, because I can't afford to fail the test.
M:OK, then I'll go with them. But it's a pity you can't come.
(Text 8)
M:What do you think of this apartment?
W:It's not very good. The bedroom is a little small for us.
M:It should be enough for our needs, I think.
W:And there's no hot water after ten at night. Sometimes I like to have a shower before going to bed.
M:That's true. But I love the living room. It's large and filled with sunshine.
W:I like the kitchen best. It's new.
M:Look! From here we can get a view of the park.
W:Oh, the view is great. But that bedroom is small. We can't get all of our things in it.
M:Maybe we can get some new furniture.
W:I agree.
(Text 9)
M:Uh, excuse me, you advertised for casual staff, right?
W:Yes, we advertised for an assistant cook, a kitchen hand and a cleaner. But the assistant's and the cleaner's positions have been filled already.
M:Not to worry. The kitchen hand job is fine for me. How many shifts would I have to work every week?
W:Our casual staff are generally asked to work on Sundays, but you'll also have to work on Friday—that's our biggest day of the week.
M:What about the pay?
W:The usual rate is $15 an hour. Well, for college students like you, we pay $3 more than that.
M:Thanks. When can I start?
W:You'll have to formally talk to the manager before starting.
M:What should I pay attention to when meeting with the manager?
W:Bear in mind that he'll want to know all about your work history, so you'll need to email your application form first. We'd also like to see a reference, so bring that with you.
M:What else?
W:Oh, one more thing. He'll want to know if you're permitted to work in this country, so your passport is necessary.
M:I see. Thank you.
(Text 10)
W:Good morning, everyone. Now if you're looking for something to do this weekend, why not join in the Bartlow town race on Saturday? The race starts at Bartlow Town Hall and finishes at the football stadium; that's five kilometers. And don't worry if you can't run all that way. Walkers are welcome too! The race begins at 9:15 but you should arrive at the Town Hall 45 minutes early, at 8:30, to check in and get your race number. There are money prizes for the winners in different age groups and everybody will get a free T-shirt when they finish. Adults pay $2 each to run in the race. It is only$1.50 for children and students and if the whole family decide to run there is a special price of $5 per family. Make sure to wear comfortable running shoes. And don't forget to bring some water with you—Saturday is going to be a lovely warm day and you may get thirsty. But it'll be lots of fun—see you there!
