Whether you're telling someone how to get to your house or guiding a stranger to a local
museum, you should know how to give good directions.Giving directions, though,is harder than
just telling someone how to get to a certain location.Let's learn how to guide others better.
First, instead of directing a person from beginning to end, think of it as directing him from
landmarks()to landmarks.And mention important and hard-to-miss landmarks,such as the
Eiffel Tower in Paris. These will give the person an idea of the progress he's making and also let
the person know if he's still on the way you advised him to take.
If you can't describe the route (clearly in words, draw a map.A map allows the
person to imagine where he's going. You can also include details, such as the location of
landmarks,on your map. Also, the map can give the person something to hold on to so he won't
forget your directions.
Although it might be convenient to give someone directions to your favorite shortcut(),
it could bring trouble to the person.Instead, give the simplest directions. This will reduce the
chance of the person getting lost. When considering the simplest route, choose ones with fewer
turns, even if the person takes a bit longer,or pick routes where the person can stay on one road
for a long time.Avoid suggesting routes you haven't personally taken.
-193-
Finally, don't rush when giving directions.Take time to explain important details, such as
possible dangers. If you don't speak slowly or clearly, the person may miss an important piece of
information. At the same time, avoid using words, phrases,or names that only locals know.Any
example you use should be recognizable(可辨认的)to someone from outside your community.
()41.John must mention
when using landmarks to guide others.
A.the color of each landmark
B.the time of arrival at the place
C.the main landmarks along the way
D.the distance(距离)between each landmark
)42.What kind of route should you suggest according to Paragraph 4?
(
A.The simplest one.
B.The shortest one.
C.The one you like best.
D.The one with more turns.
)43.Why shouldn't you rush while providing directions?
A.It's not polite to do that.
B.You should show your honors(敬意).
C.You need to explain every detail.
D.That can lead to unclear directions.
(
)44.Which of the following should not be used when you guide a stranger?
A.Drive north on Renmin Road.
B.Turn right after Joe's old house.
C.Turn left at the first traffic light.
D.Go straight until you see a McDonald's.
(
)45.What's the proper title of the passage?
A.Giving Directions Politely
B.How to Follow Directions Wisely
C.How to Give Good Directions
D.Making Polite Requests Instead of Direct Ones

Giving Directions in Different Places
If you ask people from different countries "Could you tell me the way to the post office?",
you will get different answers.
In Japan, people use landmarks instead of the street names. For example, the Japanese will
say to travelers,"Go straight down to the corner.46.
The post office is across from the
bus stop.”
In Kansas,America, there are no towns or buildings within miles. So instead of landmarks,
people will tell you directions and distance. For example, people will say,"Go north two miles.
-194-
47.
People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions. They will often say,"Follow
me.”48
Sometimes if a person doesn't know the answer to your question,he or she, like a New
Yorker,might say,"Sorry,I have no idea."But in Yucatan,Mexico,no one answers "I don't
know”.49
They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one.A visitor can often get
lost in Yucatan!
50
You might not understand a person's words, but maybe you can understand his
or her body language. He or she will usually point to the correct direction.Go on in that direction
and you may find the post office!
A.Turn east, and then go another mile.
B.But one thing will help you everywhere.
C.People there think "I don't know"is not polite.
D.Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market.
E.Because they don't want to talk much with strangers.
F.Then he or she will take you through the streets of the city to the post office.

五、阅读表达(共5小题,计10分)

-195-
confused()easily when listening to someone giving directions. So pay careful attention
when listening to someone showing directions. For example,he or she may tell you,"Go down
the street and turn right at the first crossing.Walk two miles, and then you will find a movie
theater and China Bank is across from the theater."After listening to someone providing
directions in English, are you clear? Here is some advice to help you remember directions.
Be sure to ask the person giving directions to slow down or repeat politely;
Repeat each direction the person gives. This will help you remember the names of
streets,turns,and crossings;
Finally, repeat the whole set of directions again.
Of course, remember to be polite when you ask for directions. Here come two tips:
.Use greetings and polite expressions.Starting the conversation with a greeting is a must
like“Good afternoon!”or“Hello!May I ask for some help?”Remember to finish with
expressions such as“Thank you!”or“Have a nice day!'”
。Use modal verbs(情态动词).For example,it sounds more polite to say,“Excuse me,.
would you like to tell me the way to Xinhua Bookstore?"But it sounds impolite if you say,"Tell
me the way to Xinhua Bookstore.
