I have come to see that I always took everything my mother did for granted For a long time, I was lost in my own pain and could not see the love and strength of the person beside me.
My dad was my first hero. He always encouraged me to follow my dream of writing. When he passed away suddenly right after my 12th birthday, I was shocked and deeply sad. I was so deep in my own sadness that I did not notice how Mother was holding our family together through her own heartbreak, working hard every day to keep us safe and cared for.
One evening, I watched her come home after a long day. She had been going from house to house, selling clothes to make money for our family. Her eyes looked tired and her steps were slow, but she still smiled and asked us about our day. At that moment, I finally understood how much she was giving us. She never complained, even though she was hurting too. She became my true hero, showing me courage and love through her small, everyday acts of kindness.
This change in me was big. I stopped taking her for granted and started helping with chores and looking after my younger brothers and sisters. I learned that life is about enjoying what we have, not wishing for what we don’t. Losing my dad left an empty place in my heart, but my mum’s strength ________. Now, I know that loving her and spending time with her is the best way to honor both of my parents.

China’s biggest freshwater lake, Poyang Lake, has almost dried up. It has now reached a very low water level (水平) , according to local reports this Sunday.
At Xingzi water measuring (测量) station in Jiangxi Province, the water level descended to the “quite low” mark on Sunday morning. It only measured 8 meters deep. This year, the water in Poyang Lake first went under the 12-meter drought (干旱) warning line on August 8. This happened 87 days earlier than usual. So far, the lake has been below this warning line for 217 days. That means for almost two-thirds of this year, the lake has been very low.
To solve the water problem, a local water company is trying its best. It uses 10 machines to bring water into its factory. The workers also check and test drinking water more often, In this way, about 160,000 people can have safe water to drink.
In recent years, Poyang Lake has kept hitting new record lows. The dry seasons are starting earlier, lasting longer, and the water levels are getting lower. In 2022, the lake’s water level fell to a record low of 4.6 meters. In 2023, the dry season started on July 20—the earliest date ever recorded.
Experts are worried. They say the long period of low water will hurt hundreds of thousands of birds that spend winter there. It will also hurt water animals like the finless porpoise, making it harder to have babies. Local governments around the lake are watching the situation closely. They are taking steps to manage water use. They are also doing some work, such as cleaning waterways and adding water to help the environment, to reduce the harm.

第二段指出事件:“When he passed away suddenly right after my 12th birthday”,说明作者12岁生日后他的爸爸去世了。
27.第三段说明方式:“selling clothes to make money for our family”,表明妈妈通过卖衣服来支撑家庭。
28.第四段表达感悟:“Losing my dad left an empty place in my heart, but my mum’s strength”,结合前文妈妈带来勇气与爱,可知妈妈的力量帮作者走出悲伤、振作起来,因此选D。
30.第四段表明改变:“I stopped taking her for granted and started helping with chores and looking after my younger brothers and sisters”,说明作者开始珍惜并帮助妈妈。
31.A 32.D 33.B 34.B 35.C
根据第二段“the water level descended to the ‘quite low’ mark on Sunday morning. It only measured 8 meters deep. This year, the water in Poyang Lake first went under the 12-meter drought (干旱) warning line on August 8”可知,鄱阳湖水位降到了极低标准,还低于干旱警戒线,因此descended to的含义为“下降到”,和选项中的dropped to意思一致,可以替换。
32.根据第三段“To solve the water problem, a local water company is trying its best. It uses 10 machines to bring water into its factory. The workers also check and test drinking water more often. In this way, about 160,000 people can have safe water to drink”可知,第三段围绕民众如何获得安全饮用水,介绍了当地采取的一系列措施。
33.根据第四段“In recent years, Poyang Lake has kept hitting new record lows. The dry seasons are starting earlier, lasting longer, and the water levels are getting lower. In 2022, the lake’s water level fell to a record low of 4.6 meters. In 2023, the dry season started on July 20—the earliest date ever recorded”可知,段中列出的数字分别体现了鄱阳湖水位不断刷新历史新低、枯水期开始时间不断提前,这些信息都说明鄱阳湖的干旱情况正在不断恶化。
34.根据第五段“Experts are worried. They say the long period of low water will hurt hundreds of thousands of birds that spend winter there. It will also hurt water animals like the finless porpoise, making it harder to have babies”,结合四个选项可知,A、C、D选项的内容都是已经发生、可核实的客观事实,而“长期低水位会伤害鸟类和水生动物”是专家基于现状给出的判断预测,属于观点。

37.前文列举了B12帮助制造DNA和红细胞且说明大脑和神经发育也需要它,此处应进一步说明其作用,D项“It also helps keep your hair and skin healthy.”
38.前文说“如果没有足够的B12,红细胞就不能正常形成”,B项“This makes you feel tired and weak.”
