We can only move slowly, so we need a shell to protect us.”
The baby snail asked again, “The caterpillar (毛毛虫) has no bones either. Why can she live without a shell?” The mother snail answered, “That’s because a caterpillar will become a butterfly. She can fly high into the sky. The sky can protect her.”
The baby snail had one more question, “But the earthworm (蚯蚓) moves like us. He has no bones and he won’t turn into a butterfly. Why doesn’t he carry a hard and heavy shell?” His mother said, “He can dig a hole and hide in the ground, and then the earth can protect him.”
The baby snail then cried, “We are so poor! We have no protection from the sky or from the ground!” His mother smiled at him, “My dear, imagine that if we don’t have the shells, what will happen to us? Hot sun will dry out our bodies and we will have nowhere to sleep. What’s worse, we will die in the heavy rain. How terrible it is! We don’t depend on the sky or the ground for protection. Are you always tired, even when you sleep a lot? It might be because you do not get enough B vitamins (维生素). B vitamins are very important for our body. They help our body in two big ways. First, B vitamins turn food into energy. Second, they help make red blood cells (细胞), which carry oxygen (O) in our blood.
There are eight different B vitamins. They are B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, and B12. Each one has its own job, but they work together to help our body work well. If you do not get enough of these vitamins, you might feel very weak, lose your hair, or even feel pain in your body.
Many people do not get enough B vitamins every day. Vegans, who eat only vegetables and no meat, sometimes do not get enough B12 because most of it comes from meat. Because of this, vegans may feel tired and not healthy. Pregnant (怀孕的) women also need more B vitamins. They need more B9 because it is very important for their growing baby.
So, how can you get B vitamins? The best way is to eat a variety of healthy foods. You can eat green vegetables, brown bread, meat, fish, cheese, milk, and eggs. For example, a fish-and-egg sandwich gives you many of the B vitamins you need in one day.
Sometimes, doctors may suggest vitamin supplements (补充剂) if you cannot get enough from food. But try to add many different foods in your diet. This will help you have more energy and keep your body healthy.
