Watching strong, determined cholitas (女摔跤手) wrestle is a unique tourist attraction in La Paz. Dressed in traditional clothes, these native women are famous for defeating males with quick moves, exciting the cheering audience.
Who are the cholitas?
Not so long ago, the word “cholita” was a very rude term. People used it to laugh at native women and their clothes and traditions. In recent years, a movement led by the Aymara president Evo Morales has made these once looked-down-on people proud again. Now cholitas can wear their traditional pollera skirt, shawl and bowler hat freely, both in the streets of La Paz and in the wrestling ring.
The history of cholitas wrestling
Wrestling has been popular in Bolivia since the 1950s, but women joined only in the mid2000s. At that time, some native women who suffered some family problems started wrestling to make friends, reduce stress and feel powerful. Promoter Juan Mamani noticed its potential, used smart marketing and turned it into a professional sport.
Audience interaction
The show is fun and exciting, just what the audience wants. Drnks and popcorn being thrown between the performers is all just part of the show.
How and where to watch cholitas wrestling?
Cholitas wrestling is mainly in El Alto, Bolivia near La Paz’s capital. The main place is El Alto Multifunctional Center, with shows mostly on Thursdays and Sundays. The cholitas perform amazing skills like suplexes and body slams. The 4-hour show allows free entry and exits. If worried about going alone, book a guided tour with local experts to experience the wonderful cultural performances.
1. What can we learn about cholitas today?
A. They are often laughed at by men. B. They can wear traditional clothes freely.
C. They are more competitive than males. D. They no longer follow their old customs.
2. Why did women join in wrestling at first?
A. To support the wrestling promoter. B. To celebrate their country’s history.
C. To make wrestling a professional sport. D. To deal with their difficult situation.
3. What can visitors do when watching cholitas wrestling?
A. Throw drinks at other visitors. B. Compete with the athletes.
C. Come and leave as they like. D. Get a translator for free.
【答案】1. B 2. D 3. C

I have a secret: I’m a mediocre birder. I write about birds for a living, so people tend to assume I must be a skilled birder as well. But the truth is my birding style could generously be described as casual (随便的). I don’t keep lists or hunt for rare birds, and frankly I’m pretty bad at identifying birds by sound.
Or at least I was until this spring, when I decided to try out a new smartphone app designed to make birding by ear accessible to the inexperienced. This tool, part of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Merlin Bird ID app, made me aware of birdsong around me.
On this particular morning, I was once again feeling frustrated about my inability to identify some of the songs I was hearing, and about the birds I was missing as a result. Then I remembered Merlin Bird ID app. It takes advantage of Cornell Lab’s vast library of more than 1.5 million birdsong recordings to identify species in real time using machine learning. I fished my phone out of my pocket and opened the app.
Within an hour, I was awakened to the presence of many amazing birds that I’d never realized were so common near my home. The app had alerted (提醒) me to the presence of Western Wood-Pewees and Olive-sided Flycatchers, helped me remember how to distinguish (分辨) the songs of Black-headed Grosbeaks from those of robins (知更鸟), and led me to the first MacGillivray’s Warbler I’d seen in years.
I’m still learning to bird by ear. I’ve found, though, that having an app listen to and identify bird songs around me in real time has greatly improved my learning. After some practice with Merlin, for example, I no longer need to reach for my phone to tell the song of a Wilson’s Warbler apart from a Yellow Warbler. And after years as an enthusiastic (热衷的) but casual birder, finding myself back in “beginner’s mind” again has been a pleasure. Learning the sounds of my local birds has added a new dimension to my appreciation of the natural world around me.
4. What does the underlined word “mediocre” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Skilled. B. Serious.
C. Patient. D. Ordinary.
5. What did the author do on the morning when he heard some unknown bird songs?
A. He recorded and uploaded them to the internet.
B. He identified them through a phone app.
C. He searched information in a library.
D. He ignored them completely.
6. How does the author develop paragraph 4?
A. By giving examples.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By following time order.
D. By analyzing reasons.
7. What does the author think of Merlin?
A. It fails to identify rare species.
B. It makes him addicted to his phone.
C. It is intended for experienced birders.
D. It offers him a new way of birding.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. A 7. D

【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“The app had alerted (提醒) me to the presence of Western Wood-Pewees and Olive-sided Flycatchers, helped me remember how to distinguish (分辨) the songs of Black-headed Grosbeaks from those of robins (知更鸟), and led me to the first MacGillivray’s Warbler I’d seen in years. (这款应用曾提醒我发现西木霸鹟和橄榄色霸鹟,帮我分清黑头白斑翅雀与知更鸟的鸣叫声,还让我时隔多年再次见到了麦吉氏林莺。)”可知,作者列举多种鸟类实例展开段落内容。故选A项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“After some practice with Merlin, for example, I no longer need to reach for my phone to tell the song of a Wilson’s Warbler apart from a Yellow Warbler. And after years as an enthusiastic (热衷的) but casual birder, finding myself back in “beginner’s mind” again has been a pleasure. Learning the sounds of my local birds has added a new dimension to my appreciation of the natural world around me.(例如,在使用Merlin练习一段时间后,我再也不用掏出手机,就能分辨出威尔逊林莺和黄林莺的鸣叫声。多年来,我一直是一名热衷但随性的观鸟爱好者,如今重拾 “初学者心态”,反而乐在其中。了解本地鸟类的鸣叫声,为我欣赏身边的大自然增添了全新的维度。)”可知,这款软件为作者开辟了全新的观鸟途径。

On the morning of April 11, a 220-pound loggerhead sea turtle (红海龟) named Jorge dove into the Atlantic Ocean — his first swim in open water in over 40 years. After decades in a shallow aquarium tank (水族箱) in Mendoza, Argentina, Jorge was finally returning to his natural home in Brazil.
Mariela Dassis, a researcher at the National University of Mar del Plata, was in charge of his satellite monitoring. She was overseeing the final stage of a careful three-year re-education and release project to prepare Jorge, rescued as a young injured turtle in 1984, for life back in the wild. Jorge holds the record for the longest time spent in captivity (圈养) of any sea turtle in the world.
The first night, Dassis barely slept, waiting for Jorge to send out a signal. Now, more than 70 days into his oceanic voyage, she feels calmer because Jorge has already traveled over 1,700 miles and has less than 760 miles left to reach his destination.
Jorge was accidentally caught in fishing nets in 1984. For decades, he lived on hard-boiled eggs and beef in calm water and his natural survival instincts (本能) faded, leaving him unfamiliar with hunting live food or reacting to ocean currents.
Following the launch of his release project in 2021, researchers began a three-year re-education plan to restore Jorge’s lost survival instincts, starting with re-adapting him to saltwater. Then Jorge boarded the plane and flew to Mar del Plata, where a more comfortable pool awaited him, filled with seawater and kept at a controlled temperature. Throughout the process, Jorge’s diet also changed: Hard-boiled eggs and beef were replaced with live food, which the turtle had to hunt. The researchers even created currents in the pool that Jorge got used to. When Jorge was ready, scientists attached a satellite tracker to his shell and released him into the ocean.
Jorge’s journey proves that even after many years in captivity, wild animals can remember their natural instincts. Scientists hope Jorge will help them learn more about how sea turtles live and migrate (迁徙).
8. What was Mariela Dassis’s duty in the project?
A. She treated Jorge’s injuries.
B. She built an aquarium tank for Jorge.
C. She monitored Jorge’s satellite signals.
D. She trained Jorge to swim long distances.
9. How did Mariela Dassis feel on the night of April 11?
A. Stressful. B. Tired.
C. Relieved. D. Confident.
10. What did the researchers’ three-year re-education plan for Jorge begin with?
A. Creating currents in the pool.
B. Switching his diet to live food.
C. Getting him used to saltwater again.
D. Adding other animals into the pool.
11. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A study on sea turtles’ migration
B. A sea turtle’s long journey home
C. How to train sea turtles in the wild
D. How to prevent sea turtles from being hunted
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. C 11. B

【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“On the morning of April 11, a 220-pound loggerhead sea turtle (红海龟) named Jorge dove into the Atlantic Ocean — his first swim in open water in over 40 years. After decades in a shallow aquarium tank (水族箱) in Mendoza, Argentina, Jorge was finally returning to his natural home in Brazil.

A team at the University of Florida reports that optimism, regular good sleep, strong social ties and similar positive influences are closely connected to healthier brain states. Their findings show that lifestyle choices and stress management can meaningfully affect the speed of brain aging, even among people who live with chronic (慢性) pain.
The study tracked 128 adults in midlife and older adulthood, most of whom had chronic pain linked to knee osteoarthritis (关节炎). Over a time of two years, researchers used MRI scans processed through a machine learning model to work out each volunteer’s “brain age” and compare it to their actual age. The difference between the two, known as the brain age gap, offered a single measure of whole-brain health.
Certain difficulties, including chronic pain, limited education and social disadvantages, were connected with brains that appeared older. However, those connections decreased over time. Instead, protective habits such as restful sleep, healthy body weight, effective stress management, avoiding tobacco and keeping supportive relationships showed a stronger and more lasting connection to younger appearing brains.
Volunteers who reported the highest number of protective things began the study with brains that looked eight years younger than their actual age, and their brain aging continued to progress more slowly throughout the two-year follow-up.
“The message is the same across our studies. Health-promoting actions are not only connected with lower pain and better physical functioning, but they appear to actually improve health in an additive fashion at a meaningful level,” said Sibille, senior author of the report.
Although the research focused on people experiencing chronic pain, the authors find that habits such as lowering stress, building up social support and keeping healthy sleep patterns are likely to benefit brain aging in many different people. “Really for every additional health-promoting thing, there is some evidence of neurobiological (神经生物学) benefit,” Sibille said. “Our findings support the growing body of evidence that healthy lifestyle is medicine.”
12. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. The process of the study. B. The reason for brain aging.
C. The importance of machine learning. D. The influence of knee osteoarthritis.
13. What do we know about volunteers with the most protective behaviors?
A. They showed no brain age gap after the follow-up.
B. Their brain aging slowed down during the two-year study.
C. Their brain age was 8 years older than actual age at first.
D. They had no chronic pain connected to knee osteoarthritis.
14. What can be concluded about the study’s results?
A. Chronic pain has the most effect on brain aging.
B. Limited education is more harmful than chronic pain.
C. Machine learning can stop the process of brain aging.
D. Healthy lifestyles may help not just chronic pain patients.
15. What is Sibille’s attitude towards the findings?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Objective.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. C

With holidays slowly winding down, many of you may be hoping to use the last of that sweet vacation time to get out of town and visit friends and family. ____16____ Elaine Swann, who runs The Swann School of Protocol, an etiquette training program, shares her rules on how to be a guest who gets invited back.
Ask early and respect the answer.
The rule comes with a few caveats (告诫), Swann says. ____17____ Also, don’t automatically assume they can host you just because you asked “Make sure you’re prepared for the answer to be yes or no, and accept and respect whatever answer they give you,” Swann adds.
Keep your visit short and sweet.
Four days and three nights is generally ideal, Swann says. ____18____ It’s long enough to spend quality time together but short enough to be over before anyone can feel too crowded or frustrated.
____19____
Is your friend’s family the type that loves to cook for people, or should you plan to get your own meals? Make your host aware of any relevant information for your visit, like allergies or specific physical needs for your stay.
Understand “Make yourself at home” the right way.
When a host tells you to make yourself at home, that doesn’t mean you should put your feet on the couch or eat all the snacks in the kitchen. Swann says that’s generally a cue to take care of yourself — you don’t have to ask if you want a drink of water or an extra napkin. But as a houseguest, you still want to be your best, most respectful self. ____20____
A. Give your host at least three weeks’ notice.
B. Be communicative about the specifics of your stay.
C. Instead, maybe booking a nearby hotel is a good choice.

A. Skilled. B. Serious.

A. He recorded and uploaded them to the internet.

C
D
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Objective.

D. But how do you ensure that your presence in someone else’s home feels like a gift?
E. Are you hoping your friends can take some time off to hit the theme park with you?
F. Offer to do the dishes, take out the trash, treat your host to a meal — or all of them.
