I walked over and asked if I could play. They said yes and guided me to a team. However, as soon as the game started, I felt nervous. Everyone ran fast and passed the ball quickly. At halftime, I walked off the field. I sat on the ground with my head down.
Just then, my father’s warm voice came into my ears. “I think you’ll do fine,” he encouraged. “Your quality can be developed, so you have more potential than you think.”
His words encouraged me a lot. I took a deep breath and walked back to the field.
In the second round, I missed many times. But every time I missed, I kept running and trying. Near the end of the game, the ball came to me again. I ran with the ball and passed it to my teammate. He scored!

C(改编自湖北省中考题)
When you study, you may feel tired and stressed. We may try several ways to focus on studying such as studying in a silent place, having enough sleep or managing time properly, but following curiosity (好奇心) is one good method.
Learning can be exciting when you follow your curiosity! Scientists say curious students enjoy studying more. They can find ways to make school subjects more enjoyable. It can also make students explore the world around them like little scientists.
When you are curious, you don’t just wait for answers. You can go out and find them yourself. Have you ever wondered why birds fly south in winter? A curious student might watch the birds, read books about them, or ask your teacher. This is what exploration is all about.
How to stay curious? Here are four easy ways to start with.
· Always ask “why”. Questions make learning more active and help you understand better.
· Connect lessons to real life. English is useful when you travel abroad. Useful knowledge helps you learn more.
· Turn learning into games. Make word cards to play memory games. Learning by doing feels like play, not work.
· Learn outside school. Join a community center to learn to play a new sport.
Let your curiosity guide you. Explore, discover, and enjoy the journey of learning!
9. Which of the following is a way to focus on studying?

“Where are you from? What do you study?” A stranger in the park asked Aizada these questions. Years ago, such questions have made her nervous. Now, she answer with a smile.
Aizada grew up in Kyrgyzstan. When she was young, Chinese movies and cartons attracted her a lot. These art forms brought Chinese history and ideas to her life. She was deeply interested in Chinese culture such as paintings, traditional clothes, festivals, and so on. For her, China was like a beautiful garden she could only see from a long distance.
When Aizada started learning Chinese, she realized how deep the culture really was. Her daily homework was to spend much time reading books about Chinese culture and history. She also joined clubs at the Confucius Institute, learning about tea culture, tai chi, and Peking opera. The more she learned, the more she loved Chinese culture.
After practising Chinese well, Aizada’s teacher advised her to study in China. In September 2014, she came to Shanghai.
During her year in Shanghai, she experienced a new way of life. The streets were crowded but lively. Transportation was so convenient. Shops stayed open late, and people could walk outside safely. She was amazed by all this. The warm-hearted people also made a deep impression on her. Sometimes strangers would start talking with her. At first, she was surprised. Later, her teacher explained that was their way of connecting.
Now, Aizada smiles when strangers talk to her. She picks a flower and says, “Look at this flower.” she said “Before coming to China, I used to stand outside a garden. But now, as a Chinese learner, I can recognize each flower by name.”
13. Why does Aizada begin the text with a stranger’s questions?
A. To give an example. B. To offer an explanation.
C. To catch readers’ interest. D. To show writer’s feeling.
14. What made Aizada want to learn about China at first?
A. Chinese art forms. B. Her teacher’s advice.
C. Chinese school clubs. D. Her study in Shanghai.
15. Why did Aizada feel surprised when strangers talked to her in Shanghai?
A. Because it was strange. B. Because she was too shy.
C. Because she knew little Chinese. D. Because she felt frightened.
16. What can we infer (推断) from Aizada’s words in the last paragraph?
A. She feels like a visitor. B. She enjoys garden life.
C. She names flowers totally. D. She knows China deeply.
第二节 阅读短文,从方框内所给的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,其中有一个多余的选项。(改编自南充市中考题)
Do you know that trees can see, hear and feel? Scientists are discovering that trees can actually sense the world around them in surprising ways. 17
Trees can feel the seasons. They know exactly when to drop their leaves in autumn to save energy for winter. They also know when to grow new leaves in spring. This helps them survive through the year.
Trees can sense light. They know where the sun is, so their branches grow in that direction to catch more sunlight. That’s why trees in the north usually have more branches on the south side. 18 The more sunlight a tree gets, the more energy it can produce to grow strong and healthy.
19 When they are thirsty, they seem to enjoy the sound of running water. If the sound continues, the roots will slowly grow toward it.
But trees do much more than just sensing things. They clean our air, cool our cities, and provide homes for animals. They also give us wood, fruit, and even medicine. 20 Scientists are working hard to find out more. Maybe one day, we will discover that trees have even more secrets waiting to be uncovered.
A. Here are some surprising senses.
B. Tree roots can also sense sounds.
C. Trees can even talk to each other.
D. Trees are important to us in many ways.
E. Sunlight helps trees make food and water.
