Anuar Abdullah has always had a special feeling for the ocean. In the 1980s, he settled in Perhentian as a diving instructor and fell in love with corals. Twice daily, he went out to sea, staying underwater for as long as his oxygen supply allowed. He learned the shapes and textures (纹理) of coral reefs long before he knew their Latin names. He studied the living conditions—the water temperature, the sunshine, the diversity(多样性) of ocean life—and saw how just one of those factors could bring about large-scale death.
Abdullah spent two decades experimenting with how to grow coral reefs in the ocean. He didn’t have a degree in marine (海洋的) biology or a research lab, but he had his own ways. Almost all the materials he used to grow corals came directly from the ocean. He didn’t use steel pipes or bricks—which he couldn’t afford—instead, he gathered rocks from the seafloor, piling them so they wouldn’t be knocked down by tidal waves. While others might depend on a lab to break live coral into pieces that were in turn used for growing, he searched for broken pieces of coral in existing reefs and fixed them to the rocks using animal-friendly glue. When he needed other materials, he started by searching the beach for waste.
Every day, the locals saw him on his knees examining corals in the ocean. Sometimes, he picked up a rock to which he had fixed a piece of coral several weeks earlier, and said very quietly, “My little acropora (鹿角大珊瑚), how are you doing today?” The locals whispered about how he’d spent days in the water speaking to corals as if they were people. “Everyone thought I was stupid,” said Abdullah, “But I knew I was doing the most important thing in the world.”
Actually, Abdullah was right. Now, in a world rapidly losing its coral reefs to climate change and environmental damage, he has become an increasingly influential expert on how to bring them back to life. Thousands have traveled from around the world to learn from Abdullah how to grow corals, with some eventually leaving their jobs to join his projects full time. With his 700 active volunteers, he has already saved about 125 acres of coral reefs.
4. Abdullah went out to sea twice daily to ________.
A. study coral reefs B. have diving training
C. check his oxygen supply D. share his feelings for the sea
5. Abdullah’s way of growing corals is________.
A. eco-friendly and practical B. traditional and indirect
C. high-tech and affordable D. scientific and expensive
6. From the passage we know that Abdullah________.
A. searched for waste to make a living B. received a degree in marine biology
C. talked to everyone about coral reefs D. became an expert on coral protection
7. What can we learn from the story?
A. Anyone with a dream is amazing. B. Achievement provides true pleasure.
C. An individual can make a difference. D. The strong man is strongest when alone.

Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard — he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night — but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she doesn’t actually accomplish much.
This phenomenon can be seen in most colleges. For example, at Dartmouth there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day and the students I used to see in there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working.
By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain’s ability to think clearly and efficiently to accomplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.
The bigger problem here is that most students don’t even realize that they’re pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work — it’s how they’ve always done it, and it’s how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it, and for good reason it not only wastes time, but it’s also mentally tiring.
In fact, the most important skill in becoming a better student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive science research concludes that about 50 minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material learned per time unit.
So how can students manage to study efficiently? One key factor is captured in the following simple formula: work accomplished = time spent×intensity of focus. Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach, on the other hand, maximizes intensity in order to minimize time.
8. Which of the following phenomenon is an example of pseudo-working?
A. Tom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture.
B. Alice and Sara are sitting on the sofa reading their favorite books.
C. Mike is sitting in the study room in preparation for a final exam quietly.
D. Jack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music.
9. What can be inferred from paragraph 3 and 4?
A. Straight-A students believe some tasks are worth twice the effort.
B. Too much thinking may weaken the brain’s ability of the students.
C. Negative effects of pseudo-working are not fully realized by many students.
D. Students will get good grades once they realize that pseudo-working is ineffective.
10. What does the underlined word “optimal’ mean in paragraph 5?
A. Longest. B. Best. C. Least. D. Effective.
11. Why does the author mention the formula in the text?
A. To show the benefit of working hard.
B. To prove the necessity of accomplishing work.
C. To emphasize the importance of concentration.
D. To explain the reason for spending much time.
D
With a sun hat made of solar panels, a tea picking robot snakes its way through rows of Longing tea bushes in Hangzhou’s West Lake scenic spot, East China’s Zhejiang province. The 550-kg robot picker is a godsend for local tea planters this season. The upcoming Qingming Festival, which falls on Wednesday this year, is the major harvest period for early spring tea, and the local tea gardens are quite understaffed these days.
Longing tea, also known as West Lake Dragon Well tea, is a kind of green tea. “The beautiful forms of a bud with one leaf or a bud with two leaves are often acknowledged as quality tea. And the picking work of such tea leaves has relied largely on hand-operated work, very difficult to be replaced by machines,” said Jia Jiangming, developer of the robot.
However, most of the tea pickers in the production areas of Longjing tea are all in their 60s, few are in their 50s, and young people are not willing to land jobs in the industry. “If so, the Longjing tea industry may face great embarrassment when there remains nobody to help pick the leaves,” Jia said when explaining why his team started to develop tea-picking robots as early as 2019.
Jia’s team introduced the model of convolution neural networks (卷积神经网络) in deep learning, enabling the robot to study many tea tree bud and leaf image data. Using binocular stereo (双目立体) vision, the robot can position where the target bud and leaf are, cut them off accurately, and then suck the leaves into its basket.
Earlier this year, Jia’s robot helper developed into its fifth generation. The upgraded robot’s overall tea-picking success rate rose from 40 percent to 60 percent. “The new generation robot can do as well as a human tea picker,” said Chen Jianneng, another researcher of the team, adding that though the robot is still in its trial operation, they plan to improve its practicability, thus allowing the tea industry to enjoy benefits brought by modern mechanization in the coming future.
12. Why is there a lack of human tea pickers in the Longjing tea industry?
A. Because machinery has taken the place of human tea pickers.
B. Because the tea-leaf picking work can only be done by humans.
C. Because human tea pickers are not capable of picking the target tea leaves.
D. Because the young generation are not interested in the demanding job.
13. What can we learn about the robot tea-leaf picker?
A. It can suck the damaged leaves into its basket.
B. It can increase the quality of the early spring.
C. It can help pick tea leaves accurately and intelligently.
D. It can reach a higher tea-picking success rate than humans.
14. What does Chen Jianneng think of the new generation robot?
A. The robot’s picking efficiency has been greatly increased.
B. The robot cannot be put into use for it hasn’t been tested yet.
C. The benefits of the robot are being enjoyed by the tea industry.
D. The robot still needs improvements before coming into common use.
15. What is the best title of this text?
A. Robot Joins Longjing Tea Harvest
B. The Newest Robot Picker Enjoys Popularity
C. Advanced Technology Is Used in Tea Industry
D. Longjing Tea-Leaf Picking Work Faces Challenge

Why does rain seem to make you sleepy?
This spring on the east coast of the US, it feels like we’ve lost touch with the sun. In Washington, DC, 14 of the first 17 days of May were rainy. ___16___. It means that for me, May has been one of the months I've felt the sleepiest. The dull weather can hit almost all of our senses in a way that gives a sign to us it is time for a sleep.
First, there's what we see-or rather, what we don't. ___17___ When it's raining and skies are cloudy, we miss out our body's internal alarm clock. As Naomi, a scientist from Central on Queensland University said, when you don't see the sunlight first thing in the morning, your body never gets the signal that it needs to shift into daytime mode.
___18___ Plants produce oils during dry periods, possibly to stop seeds from developing. When it rains, the water brings out the oils and they mix with a chemical to create a "musky” smell. ___19___. Additionally, after a thunderstorm there's a chance you may smell ozone(臭氧), which is generated when lightning interacts with the air. Some compare its smell to that of clean bed sheets.
Rain sounds are also comforting. The rhythmic pattern of rain hitting a roof, umbrella, or the ground below is called "pink noise." Pink noise is a category of background noise that has all of the frequencies that human can hear and has lower volumes at higher frequencies. According to some research, it may improve our quality of sleep by decreasing our brain activity. ___20___
The difficulty in waking up, the fresh, earthy scents, and the peace of the rain tapping on windows are enough to make anyone want to go back to bed for the day. Sadly, none of this evidence is enough to justify doing so; but it can at least explain why you may feel a little sleepy on these cloudy days.
A. Noises can make us feel sleepier during the daytime.
B. The others have been cloudy and dull for at least part of the day.
C. That earthy smell of rain can make you feel calm and comfortable.
D. It makes it easier for us to wake up from our sleep the night before.
E. Sunlight causes our bodies to stop producing what makes us sleepy at night
F. And you'll also smell that when you are in your garden turning over your soil
G. You can listen to an hour of rain on a window here, if you intend to test it out

When I was very young, my mother thought it was necessary for me to learn to play a musical instrument, as most parents do nowadays. She asked me what kind of instrument I was interested in. I didn’t have any idea, but I thought playing the drums was cool and interesting. So she took me to enroll in a drum course in the Children’s Palace, where I spent nearly every Sunday morning for two years, practicing playing the drum.
As time went on, I went to middle school. I joined a band as a drummer in my middle school. I thought it would be fun playing the drum in a team and meeting new friends. At first it was easy because of my constant practice during the primary school, but a month later, it got more and more difficult. I was the only one who couldn’t keep pace with the other players. The band consists of students playing the violin, the piano, the guitar and so on. We were in a team; the music was beautiful, but it seemed rather challenging. So I was in low spirits when playing in the band, and the joy of playing music began to fade.
Our teacher, Ms Miller, noticed my struggle and singled me out to keep practicing while everyone else got to relax. With each missed beat, I felt ashamed as my teammates watched me fail so many times. Finally I got so tired of practicing that I no longer cared if it was done right.
“Are you giving up, Steve?” Ms Miller asked gently.
“Yes, I am,” I shouted. Ms Miller sent me inside the music room where I cried out. Then she came in and said, “Don’t be sad. I believe you can make it! ” She told me never to give up and left me alone to think about it. Alone in the music room, I recalled Ms Miller’s words and finally realized she was right. Quitting wasn’t just about giving up on myself; it was about abandoning my team. I couldn’t let my teammates down.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then I decided to go on practicing.

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. C

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍“伪学习”现象的表现、危害及高效学习的方法。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard — he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night — but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she doesn’t actually accomplish much.(伪学习者看起来和感觉上都像是在努力学习的人——他或她在图书馆花很长时间,不怕熬夜到很晚——但由于缺乏专注和集中,他或她实际上并没有完成多少事情。)”可知,伪学习的特点是花费大量时间但注意力不集中,收效甚微。杰克在图书馆花很长时间写论文却听着音乐,符合这一特征。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain’s ability to think clearly and efficiently to accomplish the task at hand.(这些学生把自己置于容易分心的环境中,坚持长时间学习,这损害了他们清晰高效地思考以完成手头任务的能力。)”以及第四段中的“The bigger problem here is that most students don’t even realize that they’re pseudo-working.(更大的问题是,大多数学生甚至没有意识到自己在伪学习。)”可知,伪学习有负面影响,但很多学生并未完全意识到。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中的“Some cognitive science research concludes that about 50 minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material learned per time unit.(一些认知科学研究得出结论,大约50分钟是optimal学习时间,以最大限度地提高每单位时间所学的材料。)”可知,对于学习来说,提高效率非常重要,为了效率的最大化,50分钟的时间应该是“最适合的”或者“最佳的”,所以,“optimal”的意思与Best意义相近。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中的“One key factor is captured in the following simple formula: work accomplished = time spent×intensity of focus. Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach, on the other hand, maximizes intensity in order to minimize time.(以下简单公式体现了一个关键因素:完成的工作量=花费的时间×专注强度。伪学习的特点是专注强度很低。因此,通过伪学习来完成某件事,你需要花费大量时间。另一方面,优等生的方法是最大限度地提高专注强度,以最小化时间。)”可知,作者提到这个公式是为了强调专注的重要性,专注强度高才能在更少时间内完成更多工作。故选C项。

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. A

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Then I decided to go on practicing. I took Ms Miller’s words to heart and spent extra hours in the music room after school, focusing on each beat and rhythm until I got them right. It was tough, but as I gradually improved, my confidence grew. My teammates began to notice my progress and supported me with encouraging words. The joy of playing music started to return, and I began to feel like an essential part of the band again.
Later, we performed in an important show. Standing on the stage, I felt a mix of excitement and nerves, but I was ready. As we began our piece, I concentrated on each beat, ensuring my drumming matched the harmony of the team. The performance went smoothly, and the audience applauded loudly as we finished. Ms Miller smiled at me from the side of the stage, and I felt a deep sense of accomplishment. That moment taught me the value of perseverance and teamwork, lessons I would carry with me forever.
