But Mr Thompson was kind. He gave Dickon a seat by the window at the back of the class. Dickon could practise reading there, and no one could hear his mistakes. He was very thankful to Mr Thompson.
Dickon worked very hard. When Mr Thompson saw Dickon’s serious face, he smiled and said, “Don’t push yourself so hard, my boy. You will get tired easily.”
“But I must, or I won’t catch up with the others,” said Dickon. Hearing his classmates talk happily about maths, history, and geography made Dickon feel a bit upset and discouraged.

① Sunshine does make people happier. Imagine how cheerful you are when it clears up after long cold rainy days. Let’s discover the science behind sunlight.
② Sunshine makes your body produce a chemical called serotonin (血清素). When you are exposed to the sunlight, your body will make more serotonin, which keeps you in high spirits. At night, with little or no light, your body produces another chemical — melatonin (褪黑素). It helps your body relax and feel tired, preparing you for a good night’s sleep. You need to keep a balance between these two chemicals.
③ However, for many people, it is hard to balance sunlight with darkness. People who stay indoors a lot may not get enough sunlight. The light in a house is usually about 100 times less than that outside on a sunny day. That’s why those people should get outside in the sunshine. They can get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air and be happy.
④ There are places where it gets dark for a long time in the winter. People in those places are easier to get seasonal affective disorder (SAD). People with SAD usually go through bad experiences such as low energy and sadness. The most common treatment for those people is to sit under bright lights for some time.
⑤ Sunshine has more roles in life. For example, it helps your body make Vitamin D, which is important for health. There is more science about sunlight to discover. Next time when sunshine is on your shoulder, think: “Why do we love sunshine?”
32. What do the underlined words “be exposed to” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. care about B. get into C. dream of D. shut away
33. Which paragraph mainly discusses the influence of light through chemicals?
A. Paragraph 2 B. Paragraph 3 C. Paragraph 4 D. Paragraph 5
34. Why do people in some places get SAD more easily?
A. Because they have no friends to talk to.
B. Because the weather is too cold for them.
C. Because they don’t like the long nights.
D. Because they don’t have enough sunlight in winter.
35. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The Science Behind Sunshine
B. How to Treat Seasonal Affective Disorder
C. Ways to Balance Sunshine and Darkness

B. How to Treat Seasonal Affective Disorder
C. Ways to Balance Sunshine and Darkness
D. Two Important Chemicals in Our Body
