Hi, I’m Daniel from Grade 10, and today I want to talk about something that changed how I see my family. Last term, my dad had to take time off work because of an injury. Our household income dropped, and I noticed Mom started checking prices more carefully at the supermarket. One night, I overheard her saying, “We can’t keep ordering food every week.” That hit me hard. I’d always thought money problems were “adult things”. But I realized — if we’re a team, I should help. So I suggested a plan: no takeout on Mondays and Thursdays. Instead, I’d learn to cook simple meals. At first, it was messy — I burned rice and used too much salt. But Mom taught me step by step. Now I can make fried eggs, noodles, and even dumplings from frozen ones! We’re saving about $60 a week. More than that, dinner feels different now. We eat together more. We laugh. We share stories. I even invited my younger sister to help set the table — she calls it “our family time”. This experience taught me that growing up isn’t just about getting older. It’s about noticing what others need — and doing something, even if it’s small. You don’t have to fix everything. But you can contribute. And sometimes, just showing up in the kitchen makes you part of something bigger.

When Grandma welcomed us, she was dressed in bright colours and wore jewellery I never knew she had. She seemed to be in a good mood, but because of her deafness, communication was still difficult.
I smiled at her, and she replied. She could read our lips to know what we were saying. It had been half a year since my last visit. She must have thought that as an overseas student, I don’t get to eat much good food anymore. So, with her wrinkled hands, she passed me some homemade pastries.
Her hands tested the temperature of my cup again and again, and every time it showed a slight sign of cooling down, Grandma poured in more hot water. She also never allowed me to stop eating. As soon as I finished what was on my plate, she gave me something new to try. Finally, when my stomach couldn’t take any more, she stopped and held my hands as she sat beside me.
When it was the time to leave, she walked downstairs with us to see us off. The sun shone on the white pearls around her neck, on her silver hair and on the buttons on her clothes. It was a long time since I’d watched her so closely. She was smiling, and her wrinkles sat happily on her soft skin.
People usually compare wrinkles around a person’s eyes to a dry tree trunk. But to me, my grandma’s wrinkles are among the loveliest things I’ve ever set eyes upon.
There used to be a time when I disliked old age and kept my distance from elderly people, but that was due to my ignorance. Now that I understand that there’s beauty in everything, my grandma’s wrinkles are just like a thousand stories being told all at once.

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are concerned with their own appearance and actions too much. Negative thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?
It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person’s self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.
Shy people, who have low respect, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior. They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: “You’re just saying that to make me feel good, I know it’s not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.
Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self respect. It is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life.
28. The first paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. the cause of shyness B. the effect of shyness on people
C. the feelings of shy people D. the questions in the minds of shy people
29. According to the writer, self-awareness is ________.
A. harmful to people B. a weak point of shy people
C. the cause of unhappiness D. a good characteristic
30. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “inferior” in Paragraph 3?
A. proud B. good C. bad D. guilty
31. We can learn from the passage that shyness can ________.
A. block our chances for a successful life
B. help us to live up to our full development
C. enable us to understand ourselves better
D. have nothing to do with lack of self respect
B 29. D 30. C 31. A
根据第一段“Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are concerned with their own appearance and actions too much. (羞怯是许多人感到不快乐的原因。害羞的人焦虑不安,自我意识强;也就是说,他们过于关注自己的外表和行为)”可知,第一段主要讲的是害羞对人的影响。故选B项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. (显然,虽然自我意识是一种健康的品质,但过度自我意识是有害的)”可知,自我意识是一种好的品质。故选D项。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior. They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. (害羞的人对批评非常敏感。这让他们觉得自己inferior。他们也发现很难因为赞美而高兴,因为他们认为自己不值得赞美)”可知,害羞的人对批评很敏感,他们认为自己不值得赞美,所以批评会让他们感觉不好,所以inferior意思是“次等的”,与bad意义相近。故选C项。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life. (我们越了解自己,就越容易实现我们过上富足成功生活的机会)”以及前文提到害羞的人的种种表现,可推知,害羞会阻碍我们成功生活的机会。故选A项。
D
Everyone has “down days”. Maybe it’s because of the bad weather, or the disappointing grades on a difficult test, and some days teenagers just act uninterested in life or school. But these symptoms(症状) often pass quickly, as teens move on to new school subjects, or meet with friends to prevent themselves from thinking what troubles them at the moment. But if a teenager displays symptoms of sadness for more than two lasting weeks, it might point to something serious.
As teenagers develop, they push new boundaries(边界), complain about rules and look for more free rights from their parents. According to the online Health Guide on Adolescent Development, parents must be lasting figures in their teenagers’ life, providing safe boundaries for teens to grow, even if the teenagers act like these boundaries are unwanted.
Parents need to provide rules, while also remaining flexible(灵活的) and respectful of the growing teens’ need for freedom. For example, teenagers will often feel frustrated, embarrassed, and even angry that thought they want freedom, they still need to ask their parents for an agreement to go to a friend’s house, or need their mothers to take them to school.
The US Department of Education says that parents should respect and support their teen’s choices as long as those choices won’t have long-term harmful effects. For example, even if a parent doesn’t enjoy the music his or her teen listens to, it’s unlikely that the choice of music will prevent that teen from entering a good college, or lead to health problems. However, if that teen is drinking alcohol and driving, parents must get through strict punishments to teach that there are bad results for poor choices that come with increased freedom.
32. Why do teen’s feelings of bad days usually disappear quickly?
A. Their teachers help them.
B. They take some medicine.
C. Their parents talk with them.
D. They change their attention.
33. What does the example in paragraph 3 show?
A. Freedom must be given at anytime.
B. Teens are mad at being controlled.
C. Teens need both freedom and proper rules.
D. Rules must be absolutely strict for teens.
34. What should parents do about their teens’ choices?
A. Support their helpful hobbies. B. Tell them which college to attend.
C. Cancel their after-school activities. D. Get them away from singing pop songs.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Be With Growing Teens
B. Causes of Teens’ Sadness
C. Teens’ Worries About Strict Rules
D. The Importance of Making Friends With Teens
D 33. C 34. A 35. A
根据第一段中“But these symptoms(症状) often pass quickly, as teens move on to new school subjects, or meet with friends to prevent themselves from thinking what troubles them at the moment. (但这些症状通常很快就会消失,因为青少年开始学习新的课程,或与朋友见面,以防止自己思考当前的困扰。)”可知,青少年对不愉快的感觉会很快消失是因为他们改变了注意力。故选D项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Parents need to provide rules, while also remaining flexible(灵活的) and respectful of the growing teens’ need for freedom. For example, teenagers will often feel frustrated, embarrassed, and even angry that thought they want freedom, they still need to ask their parents for an agreement to go to a friend’s house, or need their mothers to take them to school. (父母需要制定规则,同时也要保持灵活性,尊重成长中的青少年对自由的需求。例如,青少年经常会感到沮丧,尴尬,甚至生气,尽管他们想要自由,他们仍然需要征求父母的同意去朋友家,或需要他们的母亲送他们去学校。)”可知,举例是为了说明青少年既需要自由又需要适当的规则。故选C项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“The US Department of Education says that parents should respect and support their teen’s choices as long as those choices won’t have long-term harmful effects. (美国教育部表示,父母应该尊重和支持青少年的选择,只要这些选择不会产生长期的有害影响。)”可知,对于青少年,父母应该支持他们有益的爱好。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其根据第二段中“According to the online Health Guide on Adolescent Development, parents must be lasting figures in their teenagers’ life, providing safe boundaries for teens to grow, even if the teenagers act like these boundaries are unwanted. Enjoying Your Theme Park Adventure
A trip to a theme park promises excitement, but a little planning can make the experience even better.
Start by researching the park before you go. Check its official website or app for maps, ride descriptions and show schedules. Many parks, like Disneyland or Universal Studios, offer real-time updates on wait times, helping you strategize your day. ____36____. Buying tickets online in advance often saves both time and money, and some parks even allow you to reserve access to popular attractions before arrival.
Arriving early is another smart move. Gates often open before the official start time, and being among the first inside means shorter lines for major rides. ____37____.
Consider using skip-the-line options if available. Many parks offer paid fast-track systems, such as Universal’s Express Pass or Disney’s Genie⁺, which let you bypass long waits for key rides. While these cost extra, they can be worth it if you want to fit more into your visit. ____38____. Lines for food can be just as long as those for rides, so try having lunch before noon or having an early dinner.
Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Theme parks involve a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes and take breaks when needed. ____39____— catch a show, explore air-conditioned shops, or simply relax in a shaded area.
Finally, end your day on a high note. Many parks host impressive nighttime events, like fireworks or light parades. ____40____.
A. Midday heat offers a perfect chance to rest indoors
B. Head straight to popular rides first to beat the crowds
C. Another strategy is adjusting meal times to avoid queues

Gates often open before the official start time, and being among the first inside means shorter lines for major rides.(早点到是另一个明智的举动。 B选项“Head straight to popular rides first to beat the crowds.(直接去热门游乐设施,先避开人群)”承接上文“早到排队短”的优势,提出优先去热门项目的策略,符合语境。故选B项。
根据下文“Lines for food can be just as long as those for rides, so try having lunch before noon or having an early dinner.(买食物的队伍可能和游乐设施的队伍一样长,所以试着在中午前吃午饭或早点吃晚饭)”可知,此空需点明“调整用餐时间避免排队”的策略。C选项“Another strategy is adjusting meal times to avoid queues.(另一个策略是调整用餐时间以避免排队)”直接概括下文内容,“adjusting meal times”与下文“having lunch before noon or having an early dinner”形成对应,符合语境。故选C项。
根据上文“Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Theme parks involve a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes and take breaks when needed. 故选A项。
根据上文“Finally, end your day on a high note. Many parks host impressive nighttime events, like fireworks or light parades.(最后,以愉快的方式结束你的一天。许多公园会举办令人印象深刻的夜间活动,如烟花表演或灯光游行)”可知,此空需给出“参与夜间活动”的建议。E选项“Find a viewing spot early since these events attract masses.(早点找个观赏位置,因为这些活动会吸引大量人群)”中的“these events”指代上文的烟花、灯光游行等,提醒提前占位,符合夜间活动的场景特点,符合语境。故选E项。

Less Screen, More Life
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Less Screen, More Life
It’s common to witness many of us high school students constantly glued to our screens, losing ourselves in endless social media feeds or online games. This excessive screen time often results in diminished concentration, reduced outdoor activities, and less meaningful interaction.
To solve this, we should practice a digital minimalism lifestyle by carefully choosing digital tools that are useful while reducing distractions. For instance, removing entertaining apps or designating the first hour after dinner as a “tech-free” hour for family conversation or reading can greatly boost our study efficiency. By focusing more on offline activities like school clubs or sports, we can rediscover the joy of face-to-face communication. This change will finally lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life.
Let us embrace digital minimalism to save our precious time. Together, we can build a healthier campus environment.

In Grade 9 I joined boxing classes. My friend Lea and I were the only girls in the class.
We got to throw our first punches (拳击) and learned how we should stand. I still didn’t know how to do it well, but I felt that choosing the boxing class was a right decision. Mr. Vernon, our boxing teacher, made us work hard and sweat. The boxing pads (防护垫) were my favorite, but my punches weren’t strong enough.
After participating in more practices, we had learned how to punch in six different ways. The boys were improving a lot on their strength, and Lea with her speed. What about me? Well, I had a hard time seeing the difference. Mr. Vernon would always tell me that practice would make me stronger, and this was what helped motivate me to continue.
Each practice there was at least one boy who would make fun of me and say, “Oh, you’re too short to box. Mr. Vernon has to bend down when you are on the boxing pads; oh, you’re not strong enough; you punch like a mouse.”
I know those comments were not to hurt me, but just to have fun. It’s true. I’m a small and short person and I did lack confidence; but hearing those comments can either bring you down, or make you feel motivated to show them they are wrong. In my case, they started to discourage me. I didn’t have the strength to think they were wrong, and part of me thought that they were speaking the truth. I hid it inside my heart because I thought that showing I was doubting myself would make it worse.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Then came one particular practice.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The experience taught me a great lesson.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Then came one particular practice. Somehow I was mad and angry, which made my punches suddenly stronger and faster. What amazed me was that gradually I just didn’t have that anger in me. After the practice, all my classmates burst into cheers for my great performance and Mr. Vernon also said that I was making great progress. With his praise I finally found the strength I needed. In the following practices, he was impressed with my good boxing skills, because they were getting powerful.
The experience taught me a great lesson. Boxing requires a lot of work and effort, but it has also taught me not to feel discouraged about what others say. Thanks to boxing, I have gradually realized that being short doesn’t define me. If we focus on our strong points and improve our weak ones, there is no reason for us to feel disappointed. Day by day I am becoming increasingly confident, definitely sure nothing will limit me to doing what tall or strong people can do.

24. How did Grandma communicate with the author ?
A. By hearing what the author said. B. By smiling at the author .
C. By reading the author’s lips. D. By offering homemade pastries .
25. From Grandma’s actions, we can infer that________.
A. the author doesn’t have a chance to eat homemade food overseas

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

And today I want to talk about something that changed how I see my family last term. My dad had to take time off work because of an injury. Our household income dropped, and I noticed mom started checking Prices more carefully at the supermarket. One night, I overheard her saying, we can't keep ordering food every week that hit me hard. I'd always thought many problems were adult things, but I realized if were a team, I should help. So I suggested a plan no take out on monday, days and thursdays. Instead, i'd learned to cook simple meals. At first I was messy. I burned rice and used too much salt, but mom told me, step by step, now I can make fried gg noodles and even dumplings from frozen ones. We're saving about sixty dollars a week more than that, dinner feels different now we eat together more. We love, we share stories. I even invited my Younger sister to help set the table. SHE calls IT our family time. This experience taught me that growing up isn't just about getting older, it's about noticing what others need and doing something. Even if it's small, you don't have to fix everything, but you can contribute. And sometimes just showing up in the kitchen makes you part of something bigger. Hi, i'm Daniel from grade ten.
