Krystal Mwesiga Birungi vividly remembers the first time she had malaria when she was
just five years old.It was a feeling of overwhelming weakness.Despite having a burning
thirst, she was unable to lift her head for a sip of water. She could not eat because she would
immediately throw up.She would shake violently, feeling freezing cold even though she had a
dangerously high fever.
When Krystal and her two younger brothers were growing up,their mother worked to
第4页(共12页)
support the family. When one of her children got malaria, the mother was left with the
impossible decision of whether to stay at home and care for her sick child or go to work to
earn money to pay for the treatment.
The horrific impact that malaria had on her family and community inspired Krystal to
dedicate her life to terminating the disease.Today,Krystal works as a field entomologist at
the Uganda Virus Research Institute on a project called Target Malaria, which aims to
develop genetic technology to reduce mosquito populations and interrupt transmission of the
disease.
But children there can't wait.Uganda's tropical climate and mix of warm, humid forests
and large agricultural settlements create a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes that carry
malaria.Luckily, the Global Fund is there to help.Krystal says that the Global Fund's
arrival in Uganda was a game changer.By 2023,with its support, the usage rate of long-
lasting insecticidal nets among at-risk groups in Uganda had reached 53%,and over 95%of
people with symptoms received malaria tests.Uganda reported 12.6 million malaria cases in
2023,remaining a high-burden country,but the fund's 2.7 billion US dollars investment in
malaria control across high-burden countries including Uganda in 2024 has sustained progress
in prevention.
Today,Krystal is a mother to a three-year-old son,Theo. She is thankful that she does
not face the same challenges that her mother did.And she believes that with joint efforts,
malaria will be greatly reduced as a threat to children's childhoods in Uganda.
24.What can we learn from Krystal's experience at five?
A.Malaria spread fast among kids.
B.Malaria used to be common in Uganda.
C.Malaria had similar symptoms to a cold.
D.Malaria was a greatly threatening disease.

Buildings today consume about 40%of all energy produced worldwide. And over a
quarter of a building's energy is lost through today's glass windows. In the winter they let
heat out, while in the summer they let the sun's heat in."To block heat exchange, you can
put a lot of insulation(隔热材料)in your walls, but windows need to be transparent(透明
的),”said Ivan I.Smalyukh,a professor of physics at CU Boulder.“Finding insulators that
are transparent is really challenging."
Researchers have made smart windows that change their features to offer energy
efficiency. To keep things transparent, some teams have made clear window coatings from
beer waste and by layering many thin films made of common materials.Smalyukh and his
colleagues, meanwhile, have in the past made clear gel films from wood cellulose nanofibers.
牛
Those aerogels contained randomly spread air pockets that block heat.
Their latest material,reported in the journal Science,is a silicone-based gel.The
material, which they call Mesoporous Optically Clear Heat Insulator,or MOCHI,contains
precisely arranged pockets of air that are much thinner than a human hair. The researchers
make it by mixing surfactants(表面t话性剂)in a liquid silicone solution. The surfactants join
to each other to form a complicated pipelike network, and the silicone sticks to the outside of
these structures. Then the researchers wash away the surfactant and water, and replace them
with air.
MOCHI is 90%air,and it allows more than 99%of light falling on it to pass through.
哨
Its thermal transmittance-which measures how much heat is lost through a window for every
degree of temperature difference between the inside and outside-beats conventional windows
by a large amount. While the best commercial windows have a transmittance of
0.2 W/(m2.K),the new material has 0.01 W/(m2K).
The materials used to make MOCHI are relatively low-cost,but transforming them into
the final material in the lab is far from efficient.Smalyukh reflects that the gap between a
promising material and a practical one often lies not in what it is made of,but in how it is
made. When asked about the next steps,he said simply,"We're still asking the right
questions.”
第6页(共12页)
28.What does the problem mentioned by Smalyukh in Paragraph 1 suggest?
A.Walls need more insulation to save energy.
B.Transparent heat blockers are hard to develop.
C.Glass windows cause 40%of global energy loss.
D.Smart windows have solved the energy problem.
29.Why are surfactants used in MOCHI?
A.To fill the network with 90%air quickly.
B.To form a basic structure for attachment.
C.To help the film stick to the window surface.
D.To make the material thinner than human hair.
30.What does the new material's thermal transmittance show?
A.Strong heat blocking.
B.Great transparency.
地
C.High content of air.
D.Light weight.
31.What would the researchers work on next?
北
A.Marketing MOCHI to residents.
B.Testing MOCHI in real buildings soon.
C.Replacing cheaper materials for MOCHI.
D.Improving MOCHI's producing methods.

The Caribbean has been facing severe challenges due to coral disease outbreaks, which
have destroyed populations of various coral species over recent years.Researchers from
National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)have been closely examining the
behavior of young corals in areas where adult corals have died off. What they are finding is
beginning to reshape how scientists think about natural reef()recovery.
始
The researchers combined field observations with lab experiments for their research.
Their studies showed that young corals not only grow very fast but also have a great ability to
get used to changing environmental conditions.
Interestingly, the study highlights how the spatial distribution of young corals plays a
crucial role in their ability to recover.Areas with high densities()of young corals showed
signs of rapid recovery, suggesting that these young corals can outcompete competitors that
threaten their survival. In contrast, regions with fewer young corals faced longer recovery
times, showing the need for targeted conservation strategies that prioritize the protection of
young coral habitats.
第7页(共12页)
Besides field observations, laboratory experiments done in the study also provided new
insights into how young corals physically react to stressful conditions. When they were put in
situations that copy disease outbreaks, these young corals showed great resistance, which
suggests they may be tougher than adult corals. This discovery puts young corals in the
spotlight,as they could be key to reef recovery after ecological damage.
What's more, the researchers also studied the role of genetic diversity in groups of young
corals and how it affects their recovery.Coral species with greater genetic diversity were
found to be more resistant to diseases and environmental pressures.
As global efforts to fight climate change gain more support, healthy coral reefs provide
many essential benefits:protecting coastlines, offering living spaces for countless sea
creatures, and supporting local economies through tourism and fishing industries. The results
of this study strongly remind us that protecting the basic parts of these ecosystems-such as
young coral groups-is key not only to the reefs'survival, but also to the health of the whole
marine environment.
32.What is the researchers'purpose in doing the research?
A.To stop coral disease outbreaks.
B.To restore coral reefs more efficiently.
C.To study young corals'role in reef restoration
D.To know the key indicators of reef restoration efforts.
33.What determines the effectiveness of reef restoration?
A.The type of coral competitors.
B.The depth of coral habitats.
C.The survival rate of adult corals.
D.The concentration of young corals.
34.What do the researchers probably think can help corals survive?
A.Monitoring young corals in labs.
B.Maintaining coral genetic diversity.
C.Focusing on protecting adult corals.
D.Raising species resistant to deadly diseases.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Recovery potential of young corals
B.The threat of coral disease outbreaks
C.Coral resistance to environmental stress
D.The observation of young corals in restoration

and tiredness but just tried to explain how important it was for me to find a new place to write
about and that the success of my blog depended on it.
I kept dragging her along.Walking,walking,endless sidewalk,endless cafes.
Suddenly,Mom stopped still. She raised her voice and said angrily,"Enough,Saniya.I don't
want to go anywhere!"These were the words I would not hear.I'd had enough of her
moaning..“You just don't get it!This is my job,my passion!How can you be so selfish?”I
