There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. For this, he got a bag of nails (钉子) from his father. He told the little boy every time he lost his temper (脾气), he had to hammer (锤) a nail into the back of the fence.
After driving 35 nails into the fence, he took a deep breath and drove two more on the first day. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered gradually dropped. He discovered it was easier to control his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.
Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested, “Pull out one nail from the fence for each day once you can control your temper.”
Days passed and the boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say something in anger, it leaves a scar just like this one.”

As we celebrate the Year of the Horse, we find that there are many “horse words” in our language. Those words not only tell stories about these amazing animals but also show the wisdom.
Take “horsepower” for example. Invented by British engineer James Watt, this word was used to compare engine (引擎) power to the strength of horses. Though we now know one horsepower is weaker than a real horse, the name has stayed. That shows how horses once shaped our ideas of power.
While in China, we have many idioms (成语) and famous sayings about horses, such as “Success comes as soon as the horse arrives”. My favorite saying is, “A fine horse can’t jump ten steps in one leap (跳跃), while a slow horse can travel far by keeping going.” This saying teaches me that talent helps, but effort and perseverance (毅力) matter more.
But together, these words and sayings show that horses are more than just animals. They are symbols of strength, perseverance, and the wisdom that guides us through the year ahead.

2.What can the writer learn from his favorite saying? (不超过10个词)

A little rabbit named Juju made her home in a tiny garden. One warm, sunny morning, Juju’s mom gave her a basket and asked, “Dear, could you run to the other side of the garden and pick some carrots? We’re going to cook them for dinner.” Juju nodded happily and set off with the basket on her arm.

The eagle has amazing natural talents. It can fly high in the sky without any effort. Its strong wings and sharp (尖锐的) eyes help it rule the sky and easily reach the top of the pyramid (金字塔).
The snail (蜗牛), though, doesn’t have such great abilities. Yet it can also reach great heights. Realizing its limitations (限制), the snail focuses on small but continuing progress. Each day, it moves slowly but never stops. It doesn’t give up when it meets difficulties.
This gives us an important life lesson. If we lack (缺乏) the eagle’s natural gifts to achieve goals quickly, we can learn the snail’s spirit. We should never give up and take small steps one by one. Life is like a piggy bank (存钱罐). Every small effort, whether studying a bit longer, learning a new skill, or working hard, accumulates (累加) over time. These efforts will be paid back in the end. By keeping it every day, we can get closer to our own “pyramid tops”.

2.What does the snail do when facing difficulties? (不超过10个词)

Sheila wanted to go to camp. But this year, her family was saving money for a new house. Sheila was sad when she knew her parents couldn’t send her to camp. Instead, she had to spend the summer at the lake with her grandparents.
Her grandfather noticed that she looked a little sad. “My dear,” he said. “I am good at water sports. Now I want to teach you how to drive a boat.” Sheila agreed. They got in the boat and started to sail (航行) around the peaceful lake. Sheila listened carefully as her grandfather taught some skills. Sheila laughed as the sail caught the wind. I’m a middle-aged woman. When it comes to digital devices (电子设备) like smartphones, iPads and computers, I have a love-hate relationship with them. On the one hand, they are helpful to me. On the other hand, I spend too much time on them in my free time.
Now, I see kids everywhere glued to smartphones and iPads. Many of them start using the devices before five. It worries me. Screens shouldn’t replace (代替) reading or outdoor activities.
This has reminded me of my childhood. I hardly ever sat in front of screens. Instead, I spent hours running around the yard with my sister. Sometimes, we played in the yard until it was dark. I miss the apple trees, the tomato plants and happy laughter in the yard, filled with all of my sweet childhood memories. I know kids today seldom experience these moments.
Parents now should realize the importance of screen-free activities. Kids should go outside and take in fresh air in nature. Let kids be kids — without devices.

2.How does the writer feel about kids using screens? (不超过5个词)

In Tongcheng City, Anhui Province, a very popular historical place named Liuchi Xiang receives lots of visitors recently. This narrow road holds a hidden story that reflects China’s values of tolerance (宽容) and harmony (和谐).
During the Qing Dynasty, a high-ranking official named Zhang Ying received a letter from his family. The letter showed a disagreement between his family and the Wu’s family who are their neighbors. The Zhang’s family members wrote a letter to Zhang Ying, hoping he could put pressure on the Wu family. However, Zhang answered with unexpected wisdom. He wrote a poem to point out that a wall should not cause fights. What harm is there in giving them one meter?
After reading the letter, the Zhang’s family members realized that the relationship with their neighbor was much more important than the wall. They moved their wall one meter back for the neighbor to show friendliness. The Wu’s family was deeply touched by what the Zhang’s family did and moved their wall one meter back as well. So it created a two-meter-wide road between the houses. Since then, the story has shown us the importance of being kind and tolerant.

The garden road was nice at first, but soon Juju met a small river. The bridge over the river was broken! Juju looked around and saw some stones in the river and a long branch (树枝) by the bank. She tried to step on the stones, but they were too slippery (湿滑的) and she almost fell into the water. Then she tried to use the branch as a bridge, but it was too short to reach the other side.
Juju sat down on the bank and felt worried. She looked at her empty basket and thought of her mom’s smile. Just then, she saw a group of little turtles (乌龟) swimming in the river. They were moving slowly but in a straight line. Juju’s eyes lit up—she had an idea!
