Puff, a prairie dog (草原犬鼠), and Pip, a little rabbit, lived in a burrow (地洞) in the middle of a field. Even though the two were very different, they depended on each other. They were both satisfied in their burrowed home.
One morning, a horse passed by and asked them, “How can you live in this dry, dusty place? You should go out and see the world. You might find a better home.”
Suddenly, their home didn’t look as good as it had before. They started to notice all the bad things about it, so the two friends set off for something better.
Soon, they came to a great field. “This is a better home,” said Pip. “Look at all that grass!” As they walked into the field, they heard a strange sound. A big machine was moving to their direction. “This is not a better home!” Pip shouted. They rushed out of the field just in time.
They continued their search. Next they found a sandy hill. “This is a better home,” Pip said. “Easy digging for sure.” As Pip enjoyed the soft ground, they heard another strange sound. A giant eagle flew down on them from the sky. “This is not a better home!” Pip shouted. They hid in the bushes. As the eagle flew off, the two quickly left there.
Next they came to a watering hole. “This is a better home,” Pip said. “Much closer to water and food!” Puff’s eyes grew wide. “Yes!” As the friends took a drink of water, a thirsty cattle was running straight for them. “This is not a better home!” Pip shouted. They moved through the water, avoiding the heavy hoofs (蹄).
“It’s hard to find a better home,” Pip said. “Why did we ever leave the one we had?” Just then, a huge balloon came close and caught the two up in its rope. Blowing with the wind, they flew through the air and turned across the land, past the watering hole, the sandy hill and the great field.
Finally, the huge balloon stopped right on top of their burrow. “Maybe ours is good enough,” Pip said. “We can take a short walk now and then,” he added. “Just to see the world a bit.” Puff nodded. “But we can always come home,” said Pip. The two nestled (安卧) together inside their burrow.

Oliver decided to leave the workhouse for London. “No one will find me in London,” he thought. On the first day, he walked and walked for twenty miles, then he fell asleep, tired and hungry. He walked for another seven days, begging (乞求) for food and water. Then in the afternoon, he walked slowly and sadly into a small town near London and sat down to rest. His feet were bleeding and he was covered in dirt. A boy saw him and came to talk to him.
“Hello, where have you been?” asked the boy.
The boy was about the same age as Oliver, but he was a strange-looking boy. He had a large hat and he wore a man’s coat, which came nearly to his feet. He was just a dirty little boy but he acted and talked like an adult.
Oliver explained he had walked for a few days and was very hungry.
The boy bought Oliver some food. Then, as Oliver ate hungrily, they talked.
Oliver told the boy that he was going to London and had no place to stay.
“I know an old gentleman who lives in London,” said the boy. “He’ll give you a place to stay for nothing.”
“Really?” said Oliver with his eyes shining brightly.
Oliver was thankful for the boy’s offer. The boy, Jack Dawkins, and Oliver soon became new friends, but Jack’s friends called him the Dodger.
Late that night they reached London. Then Dodger led Oliver to a narrow smelly street, and into a house. They climbed the stairs and went into a room at the top.
Oliver looked around. They were in a large room. The walls and ceiling were black with age and dirt. A man was cooking some food. The man had an ugly face and dirty red hair. There were beds on the floor. Four or five boys, about the same age as the Dodger, sat around a table.
“Fagin,” said the Dodger to the man, “this is my new friend Oliver Twist.” Fagin smiled, then he shook Oliver’s hand and said, “We are very glad to meet you, Oliver.”
After that, they all had supper. Oliver ate a lot and drank a nightcap that Fagin prepared specially for him. Then he fell into a deep sleep with a full stomach and satisfaction (满足).

His neighbor said to him, “You should fix the hole in the sheepfold right away, or more sheep will be lost.” But the man replied, “The sheep has already gone. What’s the use of repairing the sheepfold now? I think it’s useless.” So, he did nothing.
The next day, when he counted his sheep again, another sheep was missing. He felt very sorry. “I didn’t listen to my neighbor and didn’t repair the sheepfold yesterday, so this happened, I must do something now.” He thought.

故填forced;to;steal。
49.这本书里有很多精彩的故事,它帮助我更好地了解了许多中国人。
The book is _________ _________ great stories, and it _________ _________ me to understand many Chinese people better.
【答案】 full of has helped
【详解】原句中“有很多”和“帮助”是关键词,表示“有很多”的短语是be full of,修饰名词stories,表示“帮助”的单词是help,此处是现在完成时,主语是it,用has helped。

He walked for another seven days, begging (乞求) for food and water. Then in the afternoon, he walked slowly and sadly into a small town near London and sat down to rest.
