Aurora Nikula, 5, is having a normal day at her nursery. She is making a cake out of sand and mud, adding in make-believe carrots, potatoes and meat. Aki Sinkkonen, a scientist, is watching. He’s also very interested in Aurora’s cake, but for different reasons. “Perfect,” he says, admiring the way she is mixing soil, sand and leaves and then putting it on her face. “She’s really getting her hands in it.”
To a hygiene-conscious (注重卫生的) kindergarten, this could be a problem, but at Humpula daycare centre in Helsinki, children are encouraged to increase their contact with the microscopic (显微的) biodiversity. This kindergarten was included in a two-year study looking at how biodiversity enhancements affect the microbial composition of children’s skin and saliva.
The staff dug up and installed a giant live carpet of forest floor. The plants, dead wood and soil in the daycare centre were specially selected for their rich micro-biodiversity. Children grow carrots, potatoes and cucumbers, harvesting and cooking what they plant. When winter approaches, the crops fade — but the outdoor adventures do not.
A year later, it found that children who were in contact with nature had a lower probability of catching an illness resulting from disorders in the immune system. The results support the “old friends” hypothesis (假设) that humans evolved alongside microbes in air, plants and soil. The body can exchange useful microbes with the natural world to stay healthy. Without contact with these organisms — through soil, plants, and air — immune function can become overactive, leading to disease.
The kindergartens provide evidence of just how crucial healthy ecosystems are to human health. As biodiversity, habitats and wild species are lost around the planet, there is huge potential harm for human wellbeing. Increasing on site biodiversity can be a win-win for children’s health and the environment.
Based on that, the University of Sheffield has done research on installing green barriers around school playgrounds to prevent air pollution from harming children’s health. Hunter’s Bar infant school in Sheffield created a 70-metre-long fence of plants that wraps around the playground. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations in the playground were reduced by 13% six months after planting, and further decreases are expected as the fence matures.

Deema Assaf walked slowly through Birgish, one of only a few forests in Jordan, careful not to step on one of the delicate wild orchids. “We once had thick forests,” she said. “There were elephants, rhinos and the Asiatic lion, animals which used to live together with people here.” She looked up at the top of an old oak tree and said, “Discovering that made me see the landscape from a different perspective. It is fascinating to see the potential if human intervention were not affecting ecosystem negatively.”
Assaf is an architect and urban forester. After working as a full-time architect for more than ten years, Assaf left her job to look for something more meaningful. She was inspired by a video about a 2,000-year-old forest in Morocco. In the film, she saw a man-made forest in a dry country, with a high ceiling of foliage and walls of fruit trees. She decided that this was what she wanted to do in her native Jordan.
Her research led her to the Miyawaki method, which creates highly biodiverse, multi-layered native forests ten times faster than nature itself does. Her approach goes beyond planting individual trees. It is about establishing a complex and dynamic plant “community”, reconnecting native species that co-evolved together for thousands of years.
Jordan is one of the driest countries in the world, with 75 percent desert and little rainfall. Despite the challenge, Assaf believes it is crucial to act. “It is not drought that causes bare ground, it is bare ground that causes drought,” Assaf said. She claims that “the more we work on greening, the more we give nature the ability to restore itself.”
Assaf started small. Her first site was only 107 square meters. She has gradually built a database for native forest creation in Jordan. So far, she has planted four forests with more than 2,700 native plant seedlings. She also collects seeds for others, including those of endangered species in Jordan.
Assaf always emphasizes it is important to have people participate in growing forests. She often works in collaboration with schools, universities, cities, and companies. “I see it as a kind of citizen-led species recovery intervention, doing what we believe is right and being part of the solution,” Assaf explains.
( )5. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The old oak tree. B. The preservation of forests.
C. The effects of human intervention. D. The co-existence between man and wildlife.
( )6. What did the video motivate Assaf to do?
A. Rejuvenate local ecology. B. Quit her job as an architect.
C. Facilitate landscape connectivity. D. Monitor biodiversity conservation.
( )7. What does Assaf highlight in paragraph 4?
A. The importance of greening. B. The causes of desertification.
C. The urgency to conserve nature. D. The difficulty in fighting drought.
( )8. What does Assaf think is crucial to her mission?
A.Site selection. B. Database creation. C. Business expansion. D. Community engagement.
2、 七选五(2.5*5=12.5)
When people want to improve themselves, they usually try to do it directly through deliberate habit building. 9.___________ Hobbies are a prime example of how purposeful activities can lead to natural self-improvement. Since better self-discipline is something many people struggle for, this article will focus on how hobbies can deliver that.
A good hobby can displace negative behaviors. Take Rob, who joins a Saturday rock-climbing group, as an example. To enjoy the trip, he naturally reduces heavy drinking on Friday nights. 10.________
Hobbies can create better routines. Any hobby requiring a new, positive routine will add structure to your life. For instance, having a dog establishes a daily walking habit. In this context, the key point isn’t anything to do with walking being healthful. It’s that the walking happens at the same time each day. 11.___________
Hobbies build tolerance for physical efforts. Sports or intense exercise helps us develop a better sense of what healthy physical efforts feel like. We learn to put up with feelings like increased heart rate without mistaking them for signs that something is wrong. 12.___________ Research shows regular exercise relates to better discipline in household chores, spending and study habits.
13.___________ If a hobby makes you see yourself as more responsible, more capable, or more invested in discipline, you're more likely to develop those qualities. Consider hobbies involving leadership or teamwork. They can shift how you see your role in the world and encourage you to act accordingly.
Therefore, improving self-discipline doesn't mean forcing yourself into a rigid model. It can be a natural result of finding a hobby you love and allowing it to shape you.
A.Hobbies can transform your identity. B. Hobbies make you more capable than others.
C. Thus, hobbies help teach time management skills. D. This tolerance can also be applied to other areas of life.
E. This routine creates a point of organization in your evenings.
F. However, self-improvement often occurs as a satisfying side effect.
G. In this case, the hobby replaces the unhealthy habit with a fulfilling one.
