Dear Citizens,
Plastics are produced from natural materials like oil and plant minerals, yet the resulting material is entirely unnatural. This non-biodegradable substance has spread to every corner of the globe — from the deep sea to the Antarctic, and even into our bodies.
Every piece of plastic ever made survives in some form, with most eventually breaking down into microplastics: fragments (碎片) smaller than 5 millimeters, invisible to the unaided eye. Scientists estimate that the upper oceans alone contain 24.4 trillion small microplastic pieces.
Microplastics are divided into primary and secondary. Primary microplastics are intentionally produced in tiny form, while secondary microplastics result from the environmental breakdown of larger plastic items. The main types include: Types of microplastics
1 Fibers
These thin, thread-like (丝状的) plastics come from clothing and cigarette ends. One of the main ways these fibers enter lakes is through washing machines.
2 Microbeads
These tiny plastic balls are often added to personal care products but are difficult to remove from wastewater due to their small size.
3 Fragments
When a larger piece of plastic breaks down due to sunlight and weathering, it becomes smaller microplastic fragments.
4 Nurdles (小球)
Small plastic pieces produced to make larger products, escape into lakes and oceans during transportation.
5 Foam
Used as packing protection in delivery boxes, this soft product can be broken down easily into microplastics.
How long do common plastic items take to break down?
Plastic bags
Cigarette ends
Coffee cups
Bottles
Toothbrushes
Fishing lines
Can holders
Straws

We therefore urge everyone to:
1. Reduce the use of single-use plastics.
2. Choose clothing made from natural fibers.
3. Participate in plastic waste sorting and recycling.
4. Select personal care products without microbeads.
Protecting our planet begins with conscious daily choices.

Maggie Aderin, an award-winning UK astronomer and broadcaster, has worked on the James Webb and Gemini telescopes. Her autobiography Starchild records her journey from a sci-fi-obsessed child to a leading scientist, as well as her views on neurodiversity, diversity in science, and the power of astronomy.
Growing up in inner-city London, Aderin dreamed of going into space, inspired by Star Trek. She attended 13 schools in 12 years due to her parents’ divorce, and undiagnosed dyslexia (阅读障碍) made her fall behind. At 14, she built her own telescope after learning from The Sky at Night, a BBC program she later hosted. Her father, a Nigerian immigrant, instilled in her the value of education. For both father and daughter, the moon became a symbol of hope: it guided him on unlit roads in Nigeria, and shone brightly for her amid the city’s starless skies.
Aderin is open about her neurodiversity. “To be a role model, you don’t have to be perfect,” she says. “I have dyslexia and ADHD — I can’t spell well and am often late. It’s all part of my neurodiversity, and yet I am reaching for the stars.” She believes everyone has something inside them that burns bright. “The key is to find out what sets your heart on fire.”
Throughout her career, Aderin has often been underestimated, once mistaken for a cleaner or a tea lady. Being the only Black woman in her field, she now reframes these experiences as opportunities, stressing that science thrives on diversity. “Groups of similar-minded people think alike, hindering groundbreaking leaps in technology and in understanding.”
When it comes to astronomy, she notes it is the pure quest for knowledge. “To me, it’s like poetry and art, enlivening the spirit. Every culture has looked up at the night sky and wondered what’s out there,” she says. During the pandemic, she encouraged people to look up: “A broader perspective helps.”
4.What can be inferred about Aderin’s early years?
A.Dyslexia kept her from schooling.
B.Her father pushed her into astronomy.
C.Her interest in space arose from Sci-fi.
D.She received little support from her family.
5.Why does the author mention the moon in paragraph 2?
A.To contrast urban and rural environments.
B.To indicate a shared source of hope.
C.To show Aderin’s admiration for her father.
D.To explain Aderin’s way to choose her career.
6.What does Aderin think of her being underestimated?
A.A motivation to work harder.
B.A chance to value diversity.
C.A challenge for female scientists.
D.A reminder of Black women’s difficulties.
7.What message does the text mainly convey?
A.Role models are expected to be perfect.
B.Astronomy appeals to people across cultures.
C.Personal hardships can fuel scientific progress.
D.Diversity and perseverance drive breakthroughs.
根据第一段中“Growing up in inner-city London, Aderin dreamed of going into space, inspired by Star Trek.(Aderin在伦敦市中心长大,受《星际迷航》启发,她从小就梦想飞向太空。)”
根据第二段中“For both father and daughter, the moon became a symbol of hope: it guided him on unlit roads in Nigeria, and shone brightly for her amid the city’s starless skies.(对父女俩来说,月亮成了希望的象征:在尼日利亚没有灯光的道路上,月亮指引着他前行;在城市无星的夜空中,月亮为她照亮。)”
根据第四段中“Being the only Black woman in her field, she now reframes these experiences as opportunities, stressing that science thrives on diversity.(作为她所在领域唯一的黑人女性,她现在将这些经历重新定义为机会,强调科学因多样性而繁荣。)”

C
Increasing exposure to burning hot-weather days appears to significantly quicken people’s biological aging.
“We now have at least two outstanding studies showing a clear impact of heatwave exposure on aging, with these carefully examining populations from two different countries,” says Paul Beggs at Macquarie University in Australia.
Siyi Chen at the University of Hong Kong and her co-workers used detailed medical screening data from nearly 25,000 adults in Taiwan Province of China to precisely determine the biological age of each person based on key indicators like inflammation (炎症), blood pressure, organ function and more. Next, they closely compared each individual’s biological age with their actual age, to figure out if they were aging faster or slower than normal.
The team then accurately calculated each person’s cumulative exposure to heatwaves, including the greatly increasing number of intense heatwaves they had lived through, up until two full years prior to their medical screening. The summed-up number of heatwave days experienced ended up being the most significant, impactful factor for quickened aging. The results closely agreed with a recent, careful study that investigated outdoor heat’s specific impact on aging in older US adults.
For the group of Taiwan Province of China, the aging effect generally increased steadily as the amount of cumulative heatwave exposure did. Each four-day increase in total heatwave duration was associated with a biological age increase equal to about nine additional days.
But the effect was even more striking for specific easily-harmed people. For instance, physical workers experienced around three times as much quickened aging from the same amount of heat exposure compared to the general group as a whole. Residents of rural communities also experienced greater, more noticeable aging impacts, indicating access to reliable air conditioners might be able to effectively break down heat’s aging effects, the researchers say.
To avoid making climate change and heatwaves worse, however, air conditioning will need to be improved by more sustainable cooling solutions, says Beggs.
8.Why does the author mention Paul Beggs in paragraph 2?
A.To compare the two studies.
B.To confirm heatwaves speed biological aging.
C.To introduce a new aging research method.
D.To explain heatwaves’ effect on populations.
9.What did Siyi Chen’s team do first in their research?
A.They determined the subjects’ biological age.
B.They compared biological age with actual age.
C.They analyzed the impact of heatwaves on aging.
D.They worked out the participants’ heatwave exposure.
10.What does the underlined word “cumulative” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Total. B.Recent. C.Random. D.Minor.
11.What can we know about physical workers from paragraph 6?
A.They rarely take medical screenings.
B.They have more access to air conditioners.
C.Their aging is faster due to heat exposure.
D.They are more likely to live in rural areas.
【答案】8.B 9.A 10.A 11.C
根据第二段““We now have at least two outstanding studies showing a clear impact of heatwave exposure on aging, with these carefully examining populations from two different countries,” says Paul Beggs at Macquarie University in Australia.(澳大利亚麦考瑞大学的Paul Beggs表示:“目前我们至少有两项高质量研究表明,暴露于热浪会对衰老产生明确影响,且这两项研究都对来自两个不同国家的人群进行了细致的调研。”)”
根据第三段“Siyi Chen at the University of Hong Kong and her co-workers used detailed medical screening data from nearly 25,000 adults in Taiwan Province of China to precisely determine the biological age of each person based on key indicators like inflammation (炎症), blood pressure, organ function and more.(香港大学的陈斯怡及其同事利用中国台湾省近2.5万名成年人的详细医疗筛查数据,根据炎症、血压、器官功能等关键指标,精确确定了每个人的生物年龄。)” 故选A。
根据第四段“ including the greatly increasing number of intense heatwaves they had lived through, up until two full years prior to their medical screening. The summed-up number of heatwave days experienced ended up being the most significant, impactful factor for quickened aging.(其中包括他们直到距离体检前整整两年之前所经历的、数量大幅增加的极端热浪。最终发现,所经历的热浪总天数,是加速衰老最显著、影响最大的因素。)”可知,研究团队随后精准计算了每个人累计暴露于热浪的时长,因此划线词“cumulative”的意思是“累计的,总的”,与total同义。故选A。
根据第六段“For instance, physical workers experienced around three times as much quickened aging from the same amount of heat exposure compared to the general group as a whole.(例如,与普通人群整体相比,体力劳动者在相同的热量暴露下,衰老速度加快了约三倍。)”
D
On warm summer nights when we were young, many of us enjoyed the pleasure of chasing tiny, flickering lights in the dark — magical little sparks that turn ordinary grasslands into secret, glowing (发光的) worlds. These are glow-worms. Yet today, across Europe, these creatures are becoming increasingly difficult to find. So severe is their decline that several species are now listed as threatened.
Few people understand this change better than the volunteers who have spent years counting these insects. In one small English village, for example, local naturalists used to record more than 200 glow-worms in a single season. In recent years, however, the number has fallen to fewer than 50. Similar trends have been reported in France, Germany and Spain, suggesting that creatures long taken for granted are quietly slipping toward disappearance.
Several reasons lie behind this decline. Hotter and drier summers reduce the small soft-bodied animals that young glow-worms rely on for food. At the same time, grasslands are replaced by roads and buildings, breaking natural habitats into isolated pieces. Because female glow-worms of some species cannot fly, even a narrow ditch or a newly built path can cut off their access to suitable areas. Most harmful of all, however, is man-made light. Street lamps often drown out the females’ faint green glow, drawing males away and harming the insects’ already weak breeding (繁殖) system.
Still, the story is not entirely one of loss. In Italy, a professor who reduced lighting in his garden and let plants grow naturally soon saw the tiny green lights return. In Britain, an ecologist has begun raising glow-worms indoors, hoping to reintroduce them to places where they once lived. Such efforts demand patience — glow-worms take two years to mature — but they offer a possible path toward recovery.
Yet scientists warn that reintroduction alone is no cure. Unless the original causes of decline are addressed, new populations will face the same fate. Protecting dark skies, reconnecting green spaces, and reshaping public attitudes may prove just as important as breeding insects in labs. For many conservationists, if concern for nature must begin with a creature that glows softly in the grass, then that is a beginning worth making.
12.How does the author introduce the topic?
A.By describing a personal experience. B.By presenting a shared memory.
C.By referring to a previous study. D.By showing a public concern.
13.What contributes most to the loss of glow-worms?
A.Damaged habitat. B.Extreme weather.
C.Slow growth cycle. D.Artificial light.
14.Why are a professor and an ecologist mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To highlight individual conservation efforts.
B.To stress the urgent need for global cooperation.
C.To illustrate the challenges of breeding insects in labs.
D.To show the difficulty in restoring glow-worm populations.
15.What would be the best title for the text?
A.The Crisis in Our Backyards B.The Methods of Saving Glowing Insects
C.Is Light Pollution a Silent Threat? D.Are Glow-Worms a Past Scene?
【答案】12.B 13.D 14.A 15.D
根据第一段中“On warm summer nights when we were young, many of us enjoyed the pleasure of chasing tiny, flickering lights in the dark — magical little sparks that turn ordinary grasslands into secret, glowing (发光的) worlds. These are glow-worms.(在温暖的夏夜,当我们年轻的时候,我们中的许多人都喜欢在黑暗中追逐微小闪烁的灯光——这种神奇的小火花将普通的草地变成了神秘的发光世界。这些是萤火虫。)”可知,作者通过描述一段共同的回忆来引出萤火虫这一话题。故选B。
13.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Several reasons lie behind this decline.(数量减少背后有多重原因。)”、“Most harmful of all, however, is man-made light.(然而,最有害的是人造光。)”
根据第四段中“In Italy, a professor who reduced lighting in his garden and let plants grow naturally soon saw the tiny green lights return. In Britain, an ecologist has begun raising glow-worms indoors, hoping to reintroduce them to places where they once lived.(在意大利,一位教授减少了花园里的灯光,让植物自然生长,很快他就看到了微小的绿光回来了。在英国,一位生态学家已经开始在室内饲养萤火虫,希望将它们重新引入曾经生活过的地方。)”可知,提到一位教授和一位生态学家是为了突出个人在保护萤火虫方面所做的努力。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“Yet today, across Europe, these creatures are becoming increasingly difficult to find. So severe is their decline that several species are now listed as threatened.(然而,如今在整个欧洲,这些生物越来越难找到。它们的数量下降如此严重,以至于有几个物种现在被列为濒危物种。)”以及最后一段中“For many conservationists, if concern for nature must begin with a creature that glows softly in the grass, then that is a beginning worth making.(对于许多环保主义者来说,如果对自然的关注必须从一种在草丛中柔和发光的生物开始,那么这是一个值得开始的开始。)”
In an age where notifications never stop and screens compete for every spare moment, a growing number of people are turning to a concept called “digital minimalism.” It’s the idea of focusing your online time on a few carefully chosen activities that truly matter, while happily missing out on everything else. 16
The philosophy isn’t about rejecting technology completely. Rather, it’s about being intentional with your digital life. Just as minimalism in the physical world encourages owning fewer but more meaningful possessions, digital minimalism asks you to evaluate which apps, platforms, and online activities actually add value to your day. 17 The key question to ask yourself is: Does this serve me, or am I serving it?
So how does one begin this process? The first step is often a “digital declutter (清理).” 18 During this period, you explore hobbies, spend time in nature, or connect with people face-to-face. This break helps you realize what you genuinely miss and what you don’t.
After the declutter, the next phase is reconnecting — but selectively. You can reintroduce the tools that support things you deeply value. Maybe it’s a podcast that teaches you something, a messaging app that keeps you close to distant family, or a music streaming service that helps you relax. 19
Critics might argue that digital minimalism is a luxury for those who can afford to disconnect. However, advocates insist it’s more about mindset than privilege. Even small changes — turning off non-essential notifications, setting a timer for social apps, or having “phone-free” hours at home — can make a significant difference.
20 It’s about regaining control over your attention and time in a world designed to steal both.
A.The goal is not to use less technology for its own sake.
B.It’s a response to the feeling of being controlled by our devices.
C.This means taking a 30-day break from all optional technologies.
D.The key is to ensure every digital tool you keep has a clear purpose.
E.Social media platforms are designed to keep users scrolling endlessly.
F.You might discover the world doesn’t fall apart without constant updates.
G.The rest — the endless scrolling, the catchy headlines — can be let go without regret.
【答案】16.B 17.G 18.C 19.D 20.A

I was watching Portrait Artist of the Year when I first heard the expression “tinker time”. In case you’ve not seen this 21 , each week a group of artists have to paint a portrait in four hours. They are divided into three groups, each having a different celebrity 22 for them.
It was getting to the 23 moments. The camera focused on one of the artists. I can’t remember his name or which celebrity he was painting, I do remember thinking his painting looked 24 but he was still adding tiny touches to it. He said it was tinker time. I 25 wrote down those two words in my notebook.
Tinker time, I think, is what we do when writing, or what we should do. I finish a short story. I leave it until the next day and 26 it again to edit and do some 27 . That’s the main part over with.
The following day I take another look at the 28 . I check all my punctuation and spellings. I read each sentence 29 , and out loud. Reading aloud makes such a difference. It’s easier to spot 30 that way.
A few days later I 31 the story and I guess this is when I spend some tinker time on it. It seems fully done but, if I tinker a little more, could I 32 it? This is when I might decide a word could be 33 . For instance, is fear the word I want or would terror be more powerful? 34 , there is nearly always a little something that can be improved on, just like those final tiny touches in the 35 .
I shall leave this now and come back in a few days to spend some tinker time on it.

Chinese calligraphy is 39 unique artistic form of Chinese cultural treasure and represents Chinese art. It is regarded as the 40 (ancient) artistic type in oriental world history. Calligraphy initially 41 (begin) due to the need to record ideas and information. The unique forms of calligraphy developed and originated from China.
There are four main 42 (category) of traditional Chinese calligraphy. Chinese seal script (字体) is the oldest script designed to be sculpted 43 still used because it has remained to be popular. Regular script was the result of another effort to 44 (simple) writing, which is the easiest to read and is very suitable for learning calligraphy. Running script is known as the semi-cursive script since it is halfway between regular and cursive. While in cursive script, all the strokes for a single character are shortened and linked together.
All in all, 45 (it) rhythm, movement and flow are accessible to anyone who views it, not only to those of us who can read Chinese characters.
36.rooted 37.into 38.that/which 39.a 40.most ancient 41.began 42.categories 43.but 44.simplify 45.its
turn...into... 故填into。
故填that/which。
故填a。
故填most ancient。
故填but。
故填its。

Possible Version 1
Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re participating in the World Earth Day poster contest! Between the two versions, I highly recommend the first one, “There is no Planet B.”
I prefer this design for two main reasons. Visually, the poster features a crying and sweating Earth, with factory chimneys emitting toxic smoke on its top. It vividly highlights the severe environmental crises we are facing, such as global warming and air pollution. More importantly, the slogan itself is brilliant. By cleverly playing on the phrase “Plan B”, it sends a powerful warning to the public: our planet is irreplaceable, and we have no backup home to escape to. Therefore, we must stop the destruction before it’s too late.
I believe this thought-provoking poster will surely leave a lasting impression on the judges. Best of luck!
Yours,
Li HuaPossible Version 2
Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re participating in the World Earth Day poster contest! Both versions are fantastic, but I favor the second one, “OUR ACTIONS, OUR FUTURE.”
What makes this poster stand out is the perfect combination of its image and slogan. In terms of the image, it presents a hopeful scene where a pair of hands gently holds the Earth. On top of the globe, leafy trees and a bright sun vividly symbolize a green, sustainable future. Moreover, the slogan perfectly matches the drawing. Written entirely in bold capitals, the words create a strong impact, conveying a highly positive message that the destiny of our planet literally lies in our own hands.
I’m sure this inspiring design will shine in the contest and motivate more people to take concrete eco-friendly actions. Good luck!
Yours,
Li Hua

Daniel had always been the top student in his class. He worked very hard and got the best grades. Because of this, he thought school was only about competition, He spent all his time alone, studying in the library or at home. He didn’t join any clubs or sports teams. To Daniel, his classmates were not friends, but rivals.
Everything changed when his Math teacher, Mr. Wilson, started a new class project called “Learning Together”. Each student had to work with a partner for one month before the final presentation. Daniel was paired with Alex. Alex was friendly and well liked by everyone. He played on the basketball team and always had a smile. But Alex found math very difficult. He often failed his math tests.
Their first meeting was uncomfortable. Daniel wanted to finish quickly. He explained the math problems in a fast and confusing way. Alex looked lost but kept trying. He asked many questions like, “Why does this formula (公式) work?” or “Can we use a simpler example?” Daniel was annoyed at first. He thought the answers were obvious.
One afternoon, after another frustrating study session, Alex didn’t leave. He opened his notebook and showed it to Daniel. The pages were full of colorful drawings next to the math problems. Alex had drawn basketball courts to explain angles, and pizza slices to explain fractions. “This is how I see the world,” Alex said quietly. “I just can’t connect it to the numbers on the page.”
Daniel looked at the drawings and felt something strange. He realized Alex wasn’t lazy or stupid. Alex was trying in his own way. Daniel had never thought about math like this before. For him, math was just rules and answers. For Alex, it was part of life. That evening, Daniel went home and thought for a long time. Maybe, he thought, he could learn something from Alex too.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The day before the presentation, Alex called Daniel, his voice full of worry.

When standing in front of the class, Daniel did something no one expected.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The day before the presentation, Alex called Daniel, his voice full of worry. Anxious and hesitant, he said that he still struggled to connect those abstract formulas with real life, afraid of ruining their teamwork. Instead of feeling annoyed, Daniel comforted him gently and suggested they build their presentation on Alex’s vivid drawings. They spent the whole evening improving the content, with Daniel explaining the logic behind the numbers and Alex adding creative visual details. Both felt quite confident when they finally wrapped up their perfect plan for the next day’s show.
When standing in front of the class, Daniel did something no one expected. Not only did he invite Alex to share his pizza-slice fraction drawings first, but he also elaborated on the mathematical principles behind them with great patience. It was the perfect blend of creativity and logic that amazed the whole class and earned thunderous applause. Never had Daniel understood so clearly that true excellence lies not in outperforming others, but in learning from differences and growing with others.

Can holders
Straws
20 years
5 years
30 years
450 years
500 years
600 years
400 years
200 years
We therefore urge everyone to:

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
