At a workshop in Yongjia, East China’s Zhejiang Province, a piece of boxwood rests quietly on the workbench. Before making the first cut, 53-year-old woodcarver Ye Xiaopeng often spends time working out the overall composition, and the expressions of his figures he wants to convey. In his view, woodcarving is not simply about carving what you see; a craftsman has to think through what he wants to express before putting knife to wood.
To outsiders, we may take it for granted that someone born into a family of woodcarvers would follow the same path. But Ye believes that what has truly shaped his artistic vision is not only the craft passed down through generations, but also the influence of reading.
Ye’s earliest reading memories had little to do with art theory. What left the deepest impression on him, however, was a copy of the book, Back to Beginnings, which was the first book that made him realize how reading could shape the way a person thinks. Looking back, he believes the book’s influence lay not in any particular knowledge it provided, but in the way it encouraged him to observe the world and reflect on it. “The influence wasn’t obvious,” he said. “It was more like the grain (纹理) hidden inside a piece of wood, forming for decades, shaping both my work and my life.” After entering the arts-and-crafts world, reading gradually evolved from a personal interest to a professional necessity. From learning carving techniques and copying traditional designs to studying sculptural references and materials on the history of sculpture, books remained a constant companion throughout his professional development.
In Ye’s view, a sculptor can observe a figure’s expression or posture from everyday life, but the cultural meanings and spiritual qualities behind the artwork must be built through reading. “Life provides vivid images; reading provides cultural depth,” he said. Every turned page strengthens a thread that links knowledge and experience, the present and the past, and ultimately, creativity and tradition.
24.What does Ye usually do before carving?
A.Refer to prior ideas. B.Go through relevant books.
C.Map out the full picture. D.Consult with experienced seniors.
25.How did Back to Beginnings influence Ye?
A.By offering carving skills. B.By inspiring deep reflection.
C.By strengthening family bonds. D.By providing useful solutions.
26.What can best describe Ye?
A.Thoughtful and committed. B.Old-fashioned and persistent.
C.Reserved and knowledgeable. D.Ambitious and straightforward.
27.What can we infer from Ye’s words in the last paragraph?
A.Tradition holds back creativity B.Life and reading fuel true art.
C.Life experience outweighs reading. D.Enough reading guarantees success.

A new study has found that human brains are accumulating microplastics at an increasing rate. Researchers analyzed 91 brain tissue samples and made a striking discovery: surprisingly high concentrations of tiny plastic bits are present in these brain samples. What’s more, recent samples contained more microplastics than older ones, roughly an increase of 50%.
While earlier studies had already detected super-small plastic bits in parts of the human body like the lungs and liver, the levels found in the brain are notably higher than those in other organs.
Previous research has already linked higher levels of microplastics in the blood to increased risks of heart attacks, strokes, and even death. Additionally, a second study, set to be published soon, offers hints that plastic pollution may harm brain function: people living in coastal areas where seawater has extremely high levels of tiny plastic bits are more likely to face cognitive issues and struggle with daily tasks.
Measuring micro-and nano-plastic particles (MNPs) in the brain tissue is tough, so multiple technical methods have been used. Data shows a sharp rise in microplastic levels: 3,345 micrograms of plastic per gram of brain tissue in 2016 and 4,917 micrograms in 2024.
Despite these findings, the study has limitations. For one, the team found no connection between MNP levels and the age at which the donors died, but the sample size was relatively small, which may have affected this result. Interpreting the measurement results also posed challenges, and there’s a constant risk that tiny plastic bits in the air could have compromised the samples during testing. Furthermore, the study did not track microplastic levels over time in living people, so it cannot explain how an individual’s microplastic exposure might change as they age.
Perhaps the biggest unanswered question is whether these brain microplastics are harmful. “Simply put, we do not know the health implications of microplastics in the brain,” West, a coauthor of the study, said. However, he stressed that waiting to fully understand the risks before taking action to address plastic pollution would be a mistake.
28.How does the author introduce the finding in the first paragraph?
A.By quoting an expert. B.By defining a concept.
C.By giving examples. D.By providing statistics.
29.Why does the author mention the “second study” in paragraph 3?
A.To explain the causes of plastic pollution. B.To show the consequences of microplastics.
C.To state the difficulty treating microplastics. D.To illustrate the struggles of coastal residents.
30.What makes the measurement of MNPs in brain tissue challenging?
A.The small size of the tissue samples. B.The lack of basic measurement tools.
C.The need for multiple technical methods. D.The high concentration of MNPs in samples.
31.What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.Brain microplastics are harmful. B.Health risks are obvious.
C.Plastic pollution needs no treatment. D.Immediate action is necessary.

The toy industry is pushing forward with AI chatbots built into stuffed animals and mini robots. These toys are flexible enough to conduct limited conversations with children and to respond to them just as they finish talking. Are these interactions enough to provide the “personalized education” one company claimed? Will toys like Curio’s Grem help or harm children’s language development?
The more language that is addressed to children, the bigger their vocabulary will be. But these vocabulary words are not learned because they were spoken out of context, as current AI-infused toys do, but from caregivers who make the words come alive. Research shows that chatbot talk is unlikely to improve young children’s language outcomes. In fact, if allowed to replace conversations with caregivers, these toys may impede children’s language learning.
When a caregiver describes something that a child is interested in, children can learn its name. A chatbot is less able to teach children about their environments because it cannot see and describe a toy the child is holding. Even if it could see, it does not have prior knowledge about the toys a child owns. Language skills do not grow from simply hearing lots of words — they grow from hearing words in conversations that capture the child’s attention.
Finally, children are also seeking further information about the sounds of their language. The caregivers’ repetition of the word emphasizes its name while also giving the child more information about the sound of the word. If the child mispronounces the word, the caregiver will likely emphasize the correct pronunciation. Commercially available chatbots can’t reliably do this.
Quality language expands on what toddlers (学步的儿童) know, takes the child’s perspective and past history into consideration, and responds to children’s questions. We have seen some work that shows social robots can help preschool children learn vocabulary, and that conversational agents who ask older children to respond to educational television programs can help children learn. However, we need more research to know the effects these robots have on babies’ and toddlers’ language learning. Until that happens, we believe that the humans in toddlers’ lives are responsible for conducting the conversations that grow children’s language. As a researcher and his teammates state, “Our babies shouldn’t be lab mice for toy companies.”
32.What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.To point out a problem. B.To present a phenomenon.
C.To put forward the viewpoint. D.To introduce the topic.
33.What does the underlined word “impede” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Prevent. B.Facilitate. C.Secure. D.Maintain.
34.What can a caregiver do to help children learn a language?
A.Provide interaction in context. B.Emphasize their names.
C.Weaken their attention. D.Repeat grammar rules.
35.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A.Is It Necessary to Interact with Caregivers?
B.Will AI-Powered Toys Be a New Toy Trend?
C.Are Caregivers the Secret to Kids’ Overall Development?

It is natural to compare ourselves with others and to get caught in a mental comparison cycle, yet this is seldom beneficial. You may have heard the expression, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” 36
Comparison not only robs us of joy, but it can also fuel self-criticism and a lack of self-acceptance. 37 “I am not as successful and competent as they are.” “Why don’t I have what they have?” We use comparison as a way of self-criticism, which prevents self-acceptance.
Another issue with comparison is that it causes unrealistic expectations. When we compare ourselves to others, we often overlook the context of their journey. We see the success, but not the failures, sacrifices or struggles. 38 But in reality, no one’s life is without difficulties, and by focusing on someone else’s highlights, we’re ignoring the complexity of our own story.
Comparison may secretly play tricks on us. If we meet expectations, lose weight, or get a promotion, we will feel better, calmer, and stop comparing ourselves. This may be temporarily true. 39 We can always find something else to compare, another expectation we tell ourselves we are not meeting, leaving us feeling worse once again.
Let go of the idea that you need to compete with others. Life is not a race, and there is no finish line you must cross to prove your worth. Instead of comparing, try to celebrate others’ successes and use them as inspiration for your own journey. 40 Not just for yourself, but for those around you.
A.Yet comparison is an endless process.
B.Comparison lowers your sense of security.
C.So what can we do to break free from comparison?
D.Typically, it leads to perceiving others as superior to us.
E.By doing so, you create an environment of positivity and growth.
F.This makes it easy to assume that everyone else is living a perfect life.
G.This rings true as comparing ourselves with others makes happiness hard to feel.

Mary was very happy when she got her dream part-time job at the local bookshop. It was right next to her school, so she could walk there after classes. Her boss, Mr. Thompson, was very nice and trusted her with lots of important tasks from the beginning.
One afternoon, Mr. Thompson gave Mary and her classmate Alex a special task. He wanted them to make a plan to promote a new book series all written by teenagers. “This series is unique because it reflects the voices of young authors,” Mr. Thompson explained. “I’m counting on you two to come up with something that will truly connect with the young readers. You’ll have to finalize your plan before Friday since the school Reading Festival is just around the corner.”
Mary was very excited and happy to help. She nodded eagerly. “Absolutely, Mr. Thompson! I can’t wait to get started.” She was so thrilled that she couldn’t stop smiling on her way home. Finally, there was a chance to show everyone what she could do.
But working with Alex wasn’t going to be easy. Alex was known for being bossy and having strong opinions. When Mary met up with him at the library to discuss their project, she knew it would be tricky. “I’ve worked on similar projects before, and simple booths (展位) in the school courtyard always work, and we could hand out flyers,” Alex said, without even looking at Mary.
Mary frowned (皱眉头) as she thought about Alex’s idea. She knew that booths worked well, but she felt they could do something more exciting to catch the attention of their classmates. The new book series deserved a special promotion. “If we just follow the same old methods, how will this book series stand out?” Mary argued. “What if we have a book reading session with some authors? Or...?”
Alex, however, didn’t seem interested in exploring new ideas. He rolled his eyes at Mary’s suggestions for creativity, arguing that they didn’t have the time or resources to try new things. He believed the usual methods would work best.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Despite their different opinions, Mary tried to find a solution that both could agree on.

根据第二段中的“Research shows that chatbot talk is unlikely to improve young children’s language outcomes. In fact, if allowed to replace conversations with caregivers, these toys may impede children’s language learning.(研究表明,聊天机器人的对话不太可能改善幼儿的语言能力。事实上,如果用这些玩具替代与看护者的交流,它们可能会impede儿童的语言学习。)”可知,前一句指出聊天机器人无法提升孩子语言能力,后一句用“in fact”进一步说明负面影响,因此“impede”表示“阻碍、阻止”,与prevent含义一致。故选A项。
根据第二段中的“But these vocabulary words are not learned because they were spoken out of context, as current AI-infused toys do, but from caregivers who make the words come alive.(但这些词汇并非像当前AI玩具那样脱离语境习得,而是通过看护者让词汇变得生动鲜活而学会的。)”和第三段中的“Language skills do not grow from simply hearing lots of words — they grow from hearing words in conversations that capture the child’s attention.(语言技能并非单纯通过听大量单词形成,而是源于在能吸引孩子注意力的对话中聆听词汇。)” 故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Will toys like Curio’s Grem help or harm children’s language development?(像库里奥的格雷姆这样的玩具对儿童的语言发展是有益还是有害?)”

前文“You may have heard the expression, “Comparison is the thief of joy.”(您或许听过这样一句话:“比较是快乐的小偷。”)” G选项“This rings true as comparing ourselves with others makes happiness hard to feel.(这句话千真万确,因为与他人比较会让我们难以感受到幸福。)”
37.前文“Comparison not only robs us of joy, but it can also fuel self-criticism and a lack of self-acceptance.(比较不仅会剥夺我们的快乐,还会助长自我批评和缺乏自我接纳的心态。)”指出比较会“助长自我批评和自我接纳的缺失”,后文““I am not as successful and competent as they are.” “Why don’t I have what they have?”(“我不像他们那样成功和有能力。”“为什么我没有他们拥有的那些?”)”紧接着列举了两句典型的自我否定内心独白。空格需要一个过渡句,说明比较如何导致自我批评。D选项“Typically, it leads to perceiving others as superior to us.(通常情况下,它会让我们觉得别人比自己更优秀。)”
38.前文“We see the success, but not the failures, sacrifices or struggles.(我们看到了他们的成功,却看不到他们的失败、牺牲或挣扎。)”说明我们在比较时“只看到别人的成功,看不到他们的失败、牺牲和挣扎”,后文“But in reality, no one’s life is without difficulties, and by focusing on someone else’s highlights, we’re ignoring the complexity of our own story.(但实际上,没有人的人生是毫无困难的,而通过关注别人的成功亮点,我们却忽略了自己故事的复杂性。)” F选项“This makes it easy to assume that everyone else is living a perfect life.(这让我们很容易认为其他人都过着完美的生活。)”
39.前文“If we meet expectations, lose weight, or get a promotion, we will feel better, calmer, and stop comparing ourselves. This may be temporarily true.(如果我们达到了预期目标、成功减重或者获得了晋升,我们会感觉更好、更平静,并且不再与他人进行比较。这在短期内可能是真的。)”提到“达到目标后停止比较”只是暂时的,后文“We can always find something else to compare, another expectation we tell ourselves we are not meeting, leaving us feeling worse once again.(我们总能找到其他的东西来比较,我们告诉自己我们没有达到的另一个期望,让我们再次感觉更糟。)” A选项“Yet comparison is an endless process.(然而比较是一个永无止境的过程。)”
40.前文“Instead of comparing, try to celebrate others’ successes and use them as inspiration for your own journey.(与其比较,不如试着为他人的成功而庆祝,并将这些作为自己前行的激励。)” E选项“By doing so, you create an environment of positivity and growth.(通过这样做,你会创造一个积极向上、共同成长的环境。)”

故填is considered。
be noted for为固定短语,意思为:以…… 故填for。
故填most remarkable。
故填what。
whether…or... 故填or。
66.Dear Peter,
Delighted by this opportunity to contribute to your school’s Chinese Culture Week, I’m writing to share my plan for the video.
When it comes to traditional Chinese festivals, the Mid-Autumn Festival immediately comes to my mind. To give your schoolmates a vivid impression, I intend to open with scenes of family members making mooncakes together, which embodies the spirit of reunion. Following this, I will briefly explain the legend of Chang’e and show how we appreciate the full moon while sharing the sweet cakes. Not only will these visuals highlight the joyous atmosphere, but they will also reveal the festival’s deeper meaning of togetherness and gratitude, making the culture truly come alive.
Could you tell me if you have any advice on my video content? I’m eager to hear your thoughts.
Yours,
Li Hua

67.Despite their different opinions, Mary tried to find a solution that both could agree on. She suggested a combined approach: setting up a booth as Alex proposed, but also including a small book reading session at lunch break. “We could have a couple of student authors read excerpts from the new series,” she explained. Reluctantly, Alex agreed, seeing that a compromise might be the best way forward. For the next few days, Mary and Alex worked together, dividing the tasks and planning the promotion. By Friday, they had set up the booth with colorful decorations and arranged the book reading session.
After the activity, Mr. Thompson called them into his office. He was beaming with pride. “You both did an excellent job,” he said. “The reading session was a big hit, and many students showed interest in the new series.” Alex smiled and nodded, recognizing Mary’s contribution. “I have to admit, your idea for the book reading was a good one,” he said. Mary felt relieved and happy that their hard work paid off. They realized that by combining their ideas, they could create something truly remarkable. From that day forward, they worked well as a team, respecting each other’s strengths and learning from each other.
