“As a child, I dreamed of becoming a great explorer, admiring the pilots and astronauts who came before me. Those dreams, which once seemed impossible, taught me the value of determination, and the courage to keep moving forward in the face of hardship,” said Eileen Collins.
Beyond her groundbreaking career, Collins is deeply committed to charity and mentorship (辅导). She served on the Astronaut Memorial Foundation Board of Directors for nine years and remains on its Board of Advisors. She also supports the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation and has used her career and experience to be a positive example for women entering male-dominated fields.
As the first woman to pilot and command a NASA Space Shuttle, Eileen Collins showed what is possible through education, determination, and hard work. She became a role model for young people seeking not only careers in aviation, but the courage to chart their own path.
4. What was special about Collins’s educational path?
A. It was gradual and determined. B. It followed a fast-track route.

In an attempt to study soil health, a group of scientists from Australia’s Flinders University planted microphones (麦克风) in the ground to see if the acoustics (声学) of ants and worms would be a solid indicator of biodiversity.
“It’s a bit like going to the doctor,” ecologist Jake Robinson told The Guardian. “They put a stethoscope (听诊器) on your chest, take a health check, listen to your beating heart. ... We’re doing something similar in the soil.”
Since the sounds created by the tiny living animals in the soil are barely hearable to the human ear, the researchers set up microphones that picked up vibrations from contact with the dirt and then made them louder.
Land in Adelaide Hills in South Australia was filled with plants and tiny animals. It was also home to diverse “invertebrate (无脊椎动物) instrumentals,” creating a soil symphony of crackles, pops, and clicks. But unhealthy soil only made dull white noise, according to the research. Because insects and other invertebrates build up soils and improve their nutrient content, their presence underground indicates whether the soil is healthy.
“It’s clear acoustic complexity and diversity of our samples are associated with soil invertebrate plentifulness — from earthworms, beetles to ants and spiders — and it seems to be a clear reflection of soil health,” Robinson said in a statement for the university. “This technology holds promise in addressing the global need for more effective soil biodiversity monitoring methods to protect our planet’s most diverse ecosystems.”
Until now, traditional methods of studying soil health have included costly DNA tests, or damaging traps and digging to identify these music-makers. But the acoustic method could pave the way for researchers, conservationists, and farmers to detect — and fix — soil degradation (恶化) with ease.
“Restoring and monitoring soil biodiversity has never been more important,” Robinson added, sharing that an affordable “rock concert” might be available to more people soon. “We’re trying to popularize it, so everyone can just buy their own little recorder and microphone.”
8. What is the main purpose of the soil acoustic study?
A. To record interesting insect conversations.
B. To improve the traditional farming methods.
C. To find a new way to monitor ecosystem health.
D. To collect growth sounds of underground plants.
9. What can be an indicator of healthy soil?
A. High in water content. B. The presence of plentiful insects.
C. Strong resistance to pests. D. The production of dull white noise.
10. What is a characteristic of the acoustic method?
A. High efficiency. B. Zero cost.
C. Stable operation. D. Strong systematicness.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Problems of traditional soil tests. B. Urgent need for soil restoration.
C. Revolution in rock concert. D. The prospect of acoustic method.

A recent study has revealed an uplifting connection between grandparents and their cognitive (认知) well-being. Lead researcher Chereches expressed the interest surrounding this vital question: “Many grandparents provide regular care for their grandchildren, but an open question is whether caregiving for grandchildren may also benefit grandparents themselves.” This research aimed to explore the potential health advantages for grandparents who dedicate time to their grandchildren, particularly in decelerating cognitive decline.
Chereches and her team analyzed data from 2,887 grandparents in England. Participants answered survey questions and underwent cognitive assessments three times from 2016 to 2022. The survey inquired about the frequency of their caregiving — whether they were spending nights with grandchildren, caring for them during illness, engaging in play, assisting with homework, or even preparing meals.
The results were heartening! Grandparents who actively participated in childcare, regardless of how often or in what capacity, performed better in memory and verbal fluency tests compared to those who did not engage in caregiving. Excitingly, grandmothers who provided care displayed a slower decline in cognitive performance throughout the study.
“What stood out most to us was that being a caregiving grandparent seemed to matter more for cognitive functioning than how often grandparents provided care or what exactly they did with their grandchildren,” Chereches noted. This suggests that the joy and experience of being involved in caregiving may be more beneficial than the specifics of the activities undertaken.
Age UK has highlighted the immense benefits of this so-called “gran-nannying,” which keeps older adults mentally and physically active while combating loneliness — as long as the caregiving experience remains enjoyable and fulfilling.
This research illuminates the beautiful cycle of care and connection that exists within families, proving that the act of being a grandparent not only enriches the lives of grandchildren but also enhances the lives of grandparents, fostering happiness and vitality in their golden years. Let’s share this wonderful news, encouraging families to embrace the joys of grandparenting!
12. Which can replace the underlined word “decelerating” in paragraph 1?
A. Facilitating. B. Slowing. C. Examining. D. Anticipating.
13. How did the study gather information from the grandparents?
A. By conducting single interviews. B. By directly observing their caregiving.
C. By analysing long-term health records. D. By surveying and assessing repeatedly.
14. What does the author want to emphasize in paragraph 4?
A. Engagement matters more than details. B. Frequency has a decisive role.
C. Specific activities make a difference. D. Emotional joy is more lasting.
15. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. Grandparents: Best Caregivers for Kids
B. How to Improve Grandparents’ Well-being
C. Childcare Keeps Grandparents’ Minds Sharp
D. The Rising Trend of Grandparent Caregiving

In a heartwarming tale of community spirit and kindness, Mo Riles from South Bend, Indiana, became the center of an uplifting story that transformed his life. His old Chevy (雪佛兰) Silverado, affectionately referred to as a “Franken-truck” due to its various dents (凹陷), buckled (扭曲的) bottom, and a funny look, had got quite a bit of attention in town.
People in the town couldn’t help but see the truck when it drove down the streets, and it often made them laugh or feel surprised. One diner customer said he couldn’t believe it, saying, “I thought it was AI and didn’t know if it was real,” while another talked about the truck’s condition, stating, “It’s unbelievable how the thing even moves.” The truck’s strange look led to many light jokes online, with comments like, “Where is the duct tape when you need it?” and “Looks like the Hulk smashed (猛击) it…” Even with the playful jokes, Mo didn’t give up, driving his truck without complaint, even when he was having health problems lately.
However, the story took a wonderful turn when Colin Crowel, the owner of Carguys Auto Detailing, came across a picture of Mo’s truck. Rather than joining in on the jokes, Colin felt a calling to help. “I just thought there’s gotta be something more to why this truck looks like this,” he said, realizing that Mo likely needed encouragement rather than humor. Colin launched a crowdfunding campaign, aiming to raise funds to provide Mo with a safer, more reliable vehicle.
In his heartfelt GoFundMe description, Colin wrote about the challenges Mo faced with his truck, highlighting its dangerous condition and the determination Mo showed in continuing to meet his daily responsibilities. “With the support of local businesses and neighbors, I believe we can make a real difference in Mo’s life,” Colin shared, emphasizing the power of community.
The response was nothing short of extraordinary. Contributions poured in from across northwest Indiana and beyond, with over 500 generous individuals coming together to raise more than $26,000 for Mo.

【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. D

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Earlier this month, the transformation became a reality. Mo’s well-loved Franken-truck took its last drive to a local Chevy dealership, where Mo was met with a shiny, new Chevy Silverado. When he first saw the truck, he stopped for a minute, tears starting to fall, and he couldn’t say a word. The dealership workers also gave him a free oil change for a year and a new set of truck keys with a small gift. The moment showed just how kind and united the community was when they came together to help him.
Reflecting on this incredible experience, Mo felt full of thanks. “That’s the part that knocked me over,” he said, tears of joy in his eyes. Mo said he would never forget the kindness everyone showed him, and he hoped to pass that kindness on — he even planned to help a neighbor who was having car trouble, just like others helped him. He added that the new truck isn’t just a vehicle to him; it’s a sign of how much people care, and it gives him hope for the future.
