Recently, scientists have discovered a similar phenomenon related to rainfall which is called the “urban (城市) rainfall effect”. It means that cities tend to receive more rain than nearby rural (农村) areas. “This is everywhere,” said Dev Niyogi, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin. This difference in rainfall has also grown over the last twenty years as the climate continues to warm. This effect influences all cities, especially dense and rapidly growing ones, many of which already struggle with flooding. Cities can attract rain for several reasons. First, large buildings slow down incoming storms, allowing them to release rain. In addition, the heat from buildings and roads creates warm, moist air that rises, cools, and then falls as rain. “All these factors may contribute to the urban rainfall anomaly (异常现象),” said Xinxin Sui, a graduate student involved in the research. In the United States, cities such as Houston, Miami, and New Orleans are among the most affected and have experienced severe flooding in the past. For their study, the scientists used satellite data to examine rainfall in over 1,000 cities from 2001 to 2020. They found that nearly two-thirds of these cities receive more rain than nearby rural areas. This effect has almost doubled in the past two decades, partly due to urban expansion and rising temperatures. Warmer air can hold more moisture, making rainfall heavier. The researchers also found that the bigger a city’s population is, the larger the gap in rainfall amounts between urban and rural areas. Niyogi suggests that city planners should take these findings seriously and prepare for the increased rainfall to prevent flooding. At the same time, cities have an opportunity to better manage water resources by redirecting extra rainwater underground to refill groundwater supplies for future use. “We should think more about how we want to manage our water resources,” he said, as “there is an opportunity here.” 1.What do we know about the urban rainfall effect? A.It only happens in a few large cities. B.It has remained unchanged in recent years. C.It means cities receive more rain than nearby areas. D.It causes cities to become cooler than nearby areas. 2.Why did the author mention Houston, Miami, and New Orleans in paragraph 2? A.To compare their rainfall with other cities. B.To explain how these cities prevent flooding. C.To show that these cities are the largest in the US. D.To give examples of cities influenced by increased rainfall. 3.What is the main idea of paragraph 3? A.The causes of temperature rise in cities. B.The research findings on urban rainfall. C.The differences between small and large cities. D.The ways the scientists collected research data. 4.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A.City planners are ignoring the problem of flooding. B.Increasing rainfall can be turned into something useful. C.Groundwater supplies are already enough in most cities. D.Cities will no longer face groundwater shortages in the future. B (25-26高一下·广西贵港·期中)Although gratitude is often top of mind around the holidays, child development experts say this season is really a reminder that thankfulness works best as a daily, year-round practice, one that can meaningfully support children’s emotional health. “As children regularly practice noticing small, good things, they’re building neural (神经系统的) paths that help them shift attention away from stress and toward positive aspects of their experience,” children’s music artist, author and mindfulness educator Kira Willey said. Over time, she said, those repeated moments help children “find good ground in all kinds of situations, even when things feel confusing”. As concerns about youth mental health continue, experts say gratitude remains one of the simplest and most accessible tools families can use to support kids’ emotional recovery. For many families, gratitude has become a practical strategy for easing day-to-day stress. Janine Marcello, a mom from Rhode Island, said that her family began a nightly gratitude check-in when her two daughters were struggling with uncertainty. “It wasn’t anything difficult,” Marcello said. “We’d just sit and go around saying one thing we appreciated that day. At first they rolled their eyes, but after a few weeks they were reminding me to do it. It honestly helped all of us settle our nerves.” Experts describe gratitude as a multi-step skill: noticing something positive, recognizing someone else helped make it happen, feeling appreciation and expressing it. Children aren’t born knowing how to do this naturally; they build the skill slowly, often by watching adults model it. For younger kids, gratitude works best when it’s playful, simple and added into routines that already exist. “The magic secret is to keep it short, keep it playful, and make it regular by keeping it to things you already do every day,” she said. That might mean pausing at breakfast to appreciate where food came from, naming something that made them smile on the ride to school, or sharing one small thing they’re grateful for at bedtime. Parents shouldn’t worry if kids don’t immediately grasp the idea. The seeds you’re planting through these repeated moments will grow over time. 5.What do child development experts stress about thankfulness? A.Work on many kinds of holidays. B.Support for kids’ emotional health daily. C.Holidays for children’s physical health. D.Paths to mental practice. 6.What benefit do repeated gratitude moments bring children? A.Building neural pathways to focus on stress. B.Recognizing stress easily. C.Staying positive in different situations. D.Noticing small good things. 7.How does gratitude work best for younger kids? A.By being long and formal. B.By being shared mainly at bedtime. C.By being taught in special classes. D.By being fun, simple and regular. 8.What’s the best title for the text? A.Gratitude: Teaching Kids the Skill B.Gratitude: Daily Practice for Kids’ Health C.Holiday Gratitude: Why It Matters Much D.Gratitude: A Family’s Daily Story C (2025-2026高一下·黑龙江哈尔滨·阶段检测)The island of Bali is a very popular vacation spot in Indonesia. Bali has beautiful beaches with white sand and crystal clear waters. But because there are so many tourists, this often means there is an increase of plastic, garbage and waste left on Bali’s beaches. Thankfully, there is now an amazing technological advancement called the BeBot Smart Beach Cleaning Robot, which can take care of this exact problem. The BeBot robot went to market in May of 2025. It operates with very limited human intervention and is solar-powered, making it eco-friendly. The robot collects waste and trash from the beaches very efficiently and quickly. However, these robots are expensive, involving the high maintenance cost in the long run. The local government stresses that the BeBot robot is an innovative and effective tool but the responsibility of environmental protection still lies on people. Every person must be careful with their trash and know how to deal with their waste appropriately and responsibly. The BeBot robot represents more than just clean beaches, which is an important goal in and of itself. It also shows that the people in charge of Bali have sustainability as a goal, and that they care about wasting less. Bali’s waste management strategy is really working, and they have even been able to recently close their biggest open landfill (填埋场), Suwung TPA.In addition to that huge achievement, since the island province began using the robots to clean beaches, Bali has been able to successfully reduce waste in their landfills from 80% to 20%. The trash is now being sorted better, which allows the items to be recycled, reused or processed in more sustainable ways instead. And what’s even more impressive is that they are on track to reduce it down to 5%. The BeBot robot indicates hope, innovation, creativity and efficiency. And if you are ever in Bali and get to see it in action, or even if you see it just on video, remember: People have the ability to live on a cleaner and less wasteful planet. And any challenge can be tackled with a bit of creativity and innovation, one step, or wave, at a time. 9.What is the local government’s attitude towards the use of the BeBot robot in Bali? A.Overly reliant. B.Sensibly supportive. C.Strongly opposed. D.Totally indifferent. 10.What deeper meaning does the BeBot robot hold beyond beach cleaning? A.The potential for complete removal of waste. B.Indonesia’s leadership in robotic technology. C.Bali’s commitment to sustainable waste management. D.The advantage of solar power resources over traditional ones. 11.Which might be one of Bali’s future waste management goals? A.To focus on developing advanced robots. B.To achieve near-zero waste going to landfills. C.To share the waste management technology globally. D.To close the largest landfill for its environment impact. 12.What might be the best title for the text? A.BeBot: The Fast Development of Clean Technology B.BeBot: The Link between Tourism and Environment C.BeBot: A Green Hope for Bali’s Waste Problem D.BeBot: The Key to Promoting Bali’s Tourism 二、思维提升-观点分享 1.Do you think space exploration is useful for our daily life? 【答案】1.C 2.D 3.B 4.B 【导语】本文主要介绍了“城市降雨效应”,即城市往往比附近的农村地区接收更多降雨这一现象,包括其产生原因、研究情况以及应对建议等。 1.细节理解题。根据第一段中“It means that cities tend to receive more rain than nearby rural (农村) areas.(这意味着城市往往比附近的农村地区接收更多降雨。)”可知,城市降雨效应意味着城市接收的降雨比附近地区多。 2.推理判断题。根据第二段中“This effect influences all cities, especially dense and rapidly growing ones, many of which already struggle with flooding.(这种效应影响所有城市,尤其是人口密集和快速增长的城市,其中许多已经在与洪水作斗争。)”以及“In the United States, cities such as Houston, Miami, and New Orleans are among the most affected and have experienced severe flooding in the past.(在美国,休斯顿、迈阿密和新奥尔良等城市是受影响最严重的城市之一,过去曾经历过严重的洪水。)”可知,作者提到休斯顿、迈阿密和新奥尔良是为了举例说明受降雨增加影响的城市。 3.主旨大意题。根据第三段“For their study, the scientists used satellite data to examine rainfall in over 1,000 cities from 2001 to 2020. They found that nearly two-thirds of these cities receive more rain than nearby rural areas. This effect has almost doubled in the past two decades, partly due to urban expansion and rising temperatures. Warmer air can hold more moisture, making rainfall heavier. The researchers also found that the bigger a city’s population is, the larger the gap in rainfall amounts between urban and rural areas.(在他们的研究中,科学家们使用卫星数据检查了2001年至2020年1000多个城市的降雨量。他们发现,近三分之二的城市降雨量比附近的农村地区多。在过去二十年里,这种效应几乎翻了一番,部分原因是城市扩张和气温上升。温暖的空气可以容纳更多水分,使降雨量更大。研究人员还发现,城市人口越多,城乡降雨量差距越大。)”可知,本段主要介绍了关于城市降雨的研究发现。 4.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“At the same time, cities have an opportunity to better manage water resources by redirecting extra rainwater underground to refill groundwater supplies for future use.(与此同时,城市有机会通过将多余的雨水引入地下,补充地下水供应,以备将来使用,从而更好地管理水资源。)”可知,从最后一段可以推断出降雨量的增加可以转化为有用的东西。 B (25-26高一下·广西贵港·期中)Although gratitude is often top of mind around the holidays, child development experts say this season is really a reminder that thankfulness works best as a daily, year-round practice, one that can meaningfully support children’s emotional health.
