5. The man encourages his son ________ more friends at school.
A. makes B. to make C. making

It was a sunny afternoon, and the school playground was full of students enjoying their break. Everyone was playing happily ____11____ suddenly a sharp cry cut through the noise. Leo fell off the jungle gym (攀爬架) and was now lying on the ground, holding his knee and crying. A deep cut was bleeding.
For a moment, everyone was ____12____ and didn’t know what to do. Then, a girl named Lily walked forward. She learned some basic first aid skills in the community centre a week ago.
First of all, she ____13____ herself calm. She knelt down and spoke to Leo in a soft voice, “Don’t worry. Let me help you.” She remembered the first and most important ____14____ was to clean the wound. She asked a boy for a bottle of clean water and a first-aid kit (急救箱) from the gym. Her main ____15____ at that moment was to stop the bleeding. She cleaned the area around the cut gently. After that, she ____16____ a clean piece of gauze (纱布) from the kit and placed it over the cut to stop the bleeding. She held it ____17____ for a few minutes until the bleeding slowed down. Finally, she put some special medicine on the wound and covered it ____18____ a clean bandage.
By the time the school nurse arrived on the scene, Lily had ____19____ under control. Leo stopped crying and was just sniffing (抽鼻子) quietly. The nurse checked Lily’s work and gave a nod of approval (赞许). “You did everything perfectly,” she said. That afternoon, Lily’s teacher told the story to the whole class. Everyone was proud of her. Lily felt a sense of pride. She realized that knowing what to do in an emergency wasn’t just about skills. More importantly, it was about having the ____20____ to use them to help others.
11. A. when B. because C. but
12. A. scared B. special C. polite
13. A. forgot B. lost C. kept
14. A. step B. aim C. plan
15. A. task B. idea C. question
16. A. hung out B. took out C. gave out
17. A. suddenly B. tightly C. weakly
18. A. with B. about C. by
19. A. something B. nothing C. everything
20. A. fun B. time C. courage
11. A 12. A 13. C 14. A 15. A 16. B 17. B 18. A 19. C 20. C
“make the bleeding stop”是一个明确要完成的事情,task“任务”指具体要做的一件工作,符合语境。
“from the kit”提示从急救箱中took out“取出”纱布,符合语境。
cover...with...“用……
it was about having the...to help others,此处需要一个能让人在紧急关头挺身而出的品质词,courage“勇气”最契合“敢于站出来救人”的中心思想,符合语境。

The Dead Sea is located in the Jordan Rift Valley in southwest Asia. It sits at about 430 metres below sea level, making it the lowest point on Earth’s land.
What’s interesting is that the Dead Sea isn’t actually a sea. It’s a lake with a salt concentration (含盐度) of more than 30 percent, which is about eight times saltier than typical (典型的) seawater. This makes it one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth.
The Dead Sea stays so salty because of its special natural conditions. Each year, it receives very little rainfall, and only a small amount of fresh water flows (流入) into it. And the hot weather around the Dead Sea causes the fresh water to evaporate (蒸发) quickly, which makes the salt concentration even higher. For these reasons, it is also known as the Salt Sea.
If you were to swim in the Dead Sea, you wouldn’t see any sea life—no plants or animals. The high salt concentration makes it unfeasible for them to survive there. That’s actually why it’s called the Dead Sea.
However, don’t let the name scare you. Even if you fall into the Dead Sea and can’t swim, you won’t die. The high concentration of salt in the Dead Sea allows anyone to float (漂浮) well, without the need for life jackets. In fact, many people visit the Dead Sea every year on vacation. If you walk along the shore, you’ll probably see many people floating in the water, reading books or magazines.
26. Which of the following helps make the Dead Sea so salty?
A. Its connection to the ocean.
B. A lot of fresh water flowing into it.
C. The hot weather causing fast evaporation.
27. Why is the Dead Sea called “dead”?
A. Because no living things can survive there.
B. Because its water is too cold for life.
C. Because no people live around it.
28. Which word can replace the underlined word in Para.4?
A. encouraging B. possible C. impossible
29. What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A. Swimming skills are important in the Dead Sea.
B. The name “Dead Sea” brings danger to people.
C. People can enjoy themselves in the Dead Sea.
30. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Plants and Animals in the Dead Sea
B. The Dead Sea: A Lake Like No Other
C. The History of the Jordan Rift Valley
C 27. A 28. C 29. C 30. B
文章第3段“And the hot weather around the Dead Sea causes the fresh water to evaporate quickly, which makes the salt concentration even higher.”
文章第4段“If you were to swim in the Dead Sea, you wouldn’t see any sea life—no plants or animals...That’s actually why it’s called the Dead Sea.”
文章第4段“The high salt concentration makes it unfeasible for them to survive there.”
文章第5段“In fact, many people visit the Dead Sea every year on vacation...you’ll probably see many people floating in the water, reading books or magazines.”
C
Sleep Right, Wake Right
People often set many alarms (闹钟) to wake themselves up in time. However, this can be unhealthy as it makes the quality (质量) of sleep worse, said Brandon Peters, a doctor from Virginia Mason Franciscan Health in Seattle, US.
A good sleep has four stages (阶段). During the first stage, we are in a light sleep. Our body relaxes, and our heart beats (跳动) more slowly. As we fall deeper into sleep, stage two starts. Our eyes stop moving, and our body temperature becomes lower. Then comes the third stage. It is the deepest sleep and also the hardest to wake up from.
Last is the fourth stage. Scientists call it rapid eye movement sleep (快速眼动睡眠), or REM sleep. Our eyes move quickly from side to side during this stage. At the same time, both our breathing and our heartbeat become faster.
REM sleep is important because most of our dreams take place during it. This helps us deal with emotions and remember the new things well that we learned during the day. REM sleep mostly takes place in the last hours of a night’s sleep. So, disrupting (打扰) it with alarms ringing one after another is a bad idea. People should set one alarm only. They can also try alarms that use light, not sound, Alicia Roth at the US Cleveland Clinic told CNN.
31. Why is setting many alarms to wake up unhealthy according to Brandon Peters?
A. Because it makes people feel tired in the morning.
B. Because it makes the quality of sleep worse.
C. Because it takes too much time to set them.
32. During which stage do people sleep the deepest?
A. The second stage. B. The fourth stage. C. The third stage.
33. What happens to our body during REM sleep?
A. Our heart beats more slowly.
B. Our body temperature cools down.
C. Our breathing becomes faster.
34. Enough REM sleep can help us ________.
A. have fewer bad dreams B. with our learning C. be more confident
35. What is Alicia Roth likely to agree with?
A. Setting many alarms can help stop oversleeping.
B. Sound alarms are better than light alarms.
C. It’s better not to disturb REM sleep with sounds.
B 32. C 33. C 34. B 35. C
第一段明确提到“People often set many alarms (闹钟) to wake themselves up in time. However, this can be unhealthy as it makes the quality (质量) of sleep worse”,Brandon Peters认为设置多个闹钟不健康是因为它会降低睡眠质量。
第二段明确提到“Then comes the third stage. It is the deepest sleep and also the hardest to wake up from.”,这说明人们在第三阶段睡得最深。
第三段明确提到“Our eyes move quickly from side to side during this stage. At the same time, both our breathing and our heartbeat become faster.”,这说明在REM睡眠期间,我们的呼吸会加快。
第四段明确提到“REM sleep is important because most of our dreams take place during it. This helps us deal with emotions and remember the new things well that we learned during the day.”,这说明足够的REM睡眠可以帮助我们更好地学习。
最后一段提到“They can also try alarms that use light, not sound, Alicia Roth at the US Cleveland Clinic told CNN.”,可推测,Alicia Roth可能同意最好不要用声音打扰REM睡眠。

Happiness is important to everyone. Most people want to be happy but few know how to find happiness. Some people believe that if they are wealthy, they will be able to do anything they want, which means happiness. Some people believe that having a good job in the government makes them happy. However, money and success don’t bring real happiness. Happiness depends on ourselves. In fact, we make our own happiness. Here are a few ways to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future, for example, getting into college or getting a good job. But we don’t enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with friends. People who have friends usually enjoy happier and healthier lives.
The second secret of happiness is to be active. For example, when people go dancing or do sports, they can forget about their problems and only think about the activities.
Finally, many people find happiness when they help others. According to studies, people feel good when they volunteer their time to do many meaningful things for other people. If you want to feel happier, you can help a friend with his or her study. You can also go shopping to get food for an old neighbor, or simply help around the house.
