Do you know that China is a very special and wonderful country? It is famous for its long history, rich culture and beautiful scenery. But today, I want to tell you about another great thing about China.
China is a nation of etiquette(礼仪). Chinese people are among the most hospitable people in the world. If foreigners visit a Chinese family, they would be surprised at the warmth that they would receive as guests. Let me tell you more about what it's like to be a guest in a Chinese family.
When you visit a Chinese family, the host usually makes tea for you. Then he will serve you snacks like biscuits or candies. Also, someone in the family will chat with you, never letting you feel lonely.
At the same time, other family members will prepare a meal for you. Chinese people treat their guests to a big meal. They always present enough food. And the guests must be the first to eat. Perhaps one of the things that surprise Western guests most is that the Chinese host likes to put food in visitors' bowls, which won't happen in Western countries. The Chinese family go out of their way to make you feel at home. As you finish eating, the host usually says,“It seems that you didn't eat much. Please have more.”
Being warm and hospitable has long been an important part of Chinese culture and tradition. AsConfucius(孔子) said thousands of years ago:

The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for the old people in China. It started long ago. The festival is on lunar 9 September. On this day, people show love and respect to the grandparents.
There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect. When an older person enters a room, everyone stands. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. Young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded subway or bus.
Respecting older people is a tradition in China. That's because the Chinese know that older people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn. Chinese people are proud of being old.
In Western countries, however, older people seldom think they are old. They are called“senior” instead of old people. They'd rather do everything themselves. Even after retirement(退休), they take up hobbies,part-time jobs and new activities to keep their bodies working well.
Westerners respect their older people too. Usually, seniors don't have to buy tickets for trains and buses. They are given discounts(折扣) in stores and restaurants.
But Western seniors don't often live with their children—— they live alone. For holidays, the family usually gather at the grandparents’ home. A great smile and a warm hug for the parents are enough for grown children to show their respect.
56. How many ways do Chinese people use to express their respect in the passage?
57. What can the young learn from older people?
58. How do Western grown children show their respect for the parents?
59. How do you show your respect to the older people in your daily life?

第二节 One possible version:
Dear David,
Glad to hear that you plan to visit Hangzhou. And I'm willing to tell you some customs in China.
In China, people usually shake hands when they meet for the first time. And when you visit a friend,it's polite to arrive on time or a few minutes early.
Speaking of table manners, you should sit up straight and keep your elbows off the table. We usually use chopsticks to eat instead of knives and forks. However, it's impolite to point at anyone with chopsticks and we can't stick them into the food, either. What's more, we should never waste food. Try to finish all the food on your plate.
I hope everything will be fine and I'm sure you will have a great time in China.
Yours,
Li Hua
