Fan Jinshi: The Daughter of Dunhuang
The Mogao Caves in Dunhuang are one of China’s most important cultural heritage sites. They are famous for their beautiful wall paintings and sculptures, which have been kept there for over 1,600 years. However, the caves have been damaged by sand, weather and human activity over time.
Fan Jinshi has spent her life protecting these caves. After graduating from Peking University, she began working as an archaeologist in Dunhuang. At first, Fan and her colleagues tried simple ways: limiting visitors, adding doors to the caves, and controlling the temperature and humidity inside. But soon they realized these steps could only slow down the damage, not stop it. So they came up with a new idea: making digital copies of the paintings. This became the Digital Dunhuang project. After years of hard work, the first part of the digital collection went online in 2016. Now people all over the world can explore the caves without leaving home.
Because of her lifelong work, Fan Jinshi is known as “the daughter of Dunhuang”. She has dedicated her life to preserving this important part of China’s cultural heritage.
