五、阅读理解
Which do you like better, breakfast or lunch?
Well, with brunch you don't have to choose! Brunch is a meal eaten around mid-morning to early afternoon, usually only at weekends. It's not just a meal. It is also a social gathering (聚会) that has become a big part of culture in the US and around the world.
So where did this strangely-named meal come from? Well, brunch is the combination (结合) of the words breakfast and lunch. British writer Guy Beringer first used it in an 1895 Hunter's Weekly article.
Rich British people are thought to be the first to have brunch. They liked to go hunting (打猎).On their day of hunting, they would stop to enjoy a mid-morning meal that included meat, eggs and other food.
This trend (趋势) first spread to the US around the 1920s, mostly in Chicago, and it became even more common after World War Ⅱ.Smithsonian said that was because more women were working during that time and wanted a break from cooking so much food on Sundays.
This special meal used to be just for Sundays, but its popularity caused it to spread to Saturdays as well. Common dishes include pancakes, French toast and bacon, to name but a few.
Today, brunch is very popular. But some people, including chefs, think brunch is almost too popular to have. People say that brunch is too expensive and top restaurants always have long lines. So sometimes people like to keep it simple and make brunch at home with their family.
