Paper money
The first known paper money appeared in China during the Song Dynasty, which was called jiaozi. The paper was a promise to pay a certain amount of money. Six centuries later (in the 1600s), banks in Europe started to give out paper money. Paper money became common in almost all currencies, and it is still widely used.

The Programme called PISA carried out a survey of students’ ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well in tests by themselves may also be better at working with other people. This finding is true in many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, whose test scores are high, also do well in working together to solve problems. Learning to cooperate and compete is important.
But this is not right for every country. Chinese students with high scores show just average (一般的) collaborative (协作的) skills. “One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers pay too much attention to grades,” said Zhao Zhongxin. “Students have a lot of exam pressure and they think of school as a place for competition.”
“However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students for today’s society,” he added. “Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve these skills.”
Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls are better than boys at working together. It said girls show more active attitudes (态度), which means they are more willing to listen to others’ opinions. PISA also found that the classroom environment influences how well students collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of activities that need communication, such as class discussions, students have a better attitude towards collaborating.
11. How many countries does the passage mention where top students do well in working together?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
12. What does the underlined word “cooperate” mean?
A. Succeed. B. Study well. C. Work together. D. Practice.

D. Skills of working together are more important than scores to students’ future.
14. What can teachers do to improve their students’ ability to work with others?
A. Start more communicative activities in class.
B. Help students to get used to exam pressure.
C. Make girls work with girls instead of boys.
D. Give students high scores on every test.
15. What is the best title for this passage?
