About a year ago, my mother turned on the dishwasher and went to the airport to drop off my father who was headed overseas on a work trip. By the time she got back, there was water all over the kitchen floor. We called a repairman, only to be told the dishwasher would have to be replaced. A new one was ordered but it would not arrive for more than a month. As my mother had a tight schedule, I had no choice but to take on the task of washing dishes by hand after dinner.
I soon found myself faced with a pile of thankless dishes in the sink, urging me to get on with it and deliver on my duty. At the beginning, I was annoyed when doing the dishes. I was in a rush to be done with them since I had an endless list of things to finish as a high school student taking a tough course load. Gradually, I realized that, for about 15 minutes every day, I could slow down time and forget everything in the world as my mind, eyes and hands focused on a simple task that would always result in success.
We did finally get the new dishwasher placed. However, I continued to wash dishes by hand after dinner, perplexing my mother greatly.
Washing dishes by hand has been more educational than I could have ever imagined. I’m running around stressed most of the day. There are homework, projects, quizzes and tests competing for my attention and time. I’ve caged myself in a prison of my dreams and expectations, cut off from many aspects of the world.
However, standing at the same spot every day in front of the kitchen window washing dishes has allowed me to recover some of it. My mind has taken snap-shots of the changing view over the yard outside the kitchen window and reflected on the passage of time in this sliver of the universe in front of me.
24.Why did the author start washing dishes by hand?
A.His mother requested him to do so.
B.The old dishwasher broke down.
C.He attempted to please his father.
D.The new dishwasher was extremely expensive.
25.What did the author think of dish-washing originally?
A.It was a stress-reliever. B.It was stressful.
C.It was tough. D.It was a money-saver.
26.What does the underlined word “perplexing” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Offending. B.Discouraging. C.Puzzling. D.Inspiring.
27.What can we learn about the author from the last two paragraphs?
A.He regretted devoting too much time to study.
B.He decided to give up some of his goals.
C.He desired to move to a house with a larger yard.
D.He grew more sensitive to the beauty of nature.
根据第一段中“We called a repairman, only to be told the dishwasher would have to be replaced. A new one was ordered but it would not arrive for more than a month. As my mother had a tight schedule, I had no choice but to take on the task of washing dishes by hand after dinner.(我们电话联系了维修人员,却被告知必须更换洗碗机,新的已预订但是至少要一个月才能到位。我的母亲日程满满,我别无选择只能在每日饭后手工清洗)”可知,作者开始手洗碗是因为旧的洗碗机坏了。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段中“At the beginning, I was annoyed when doing the dishes. I was in a rush to be done with them since I had an endless list of things to finish as a high school student taking a tough course load.(一开始,我洗碗的时候很恼火。作为一名课业繁重的高中生,我有无穷无尽的事情要做,所以我急于完成洗碗的任务)”可知,作者一开始认为洗碗很有压力。
26.词句猜测题。根据第三段中“We did finally get the new dishwasher placed. However, I continued to wash dishes by hand after dinner, perplexing my mother immensely. (我们确实更换了新的洗碗机,但是我继续坚持饭后手洗碗筷,这perplexing我的妈妈)”可知,作者继续手洗碗的行为让母亲很困惑,所以perplexing的意思是“使困惑”,Puzzling意思一致。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“However, standing at the same spot every day in front of the kitchen window washing dishes has allowed me to recover some of it. My mind has taken snap-shots of the changing view over the yard outside the kitchen window and reflected on the passage of time in this sliver of the universe in front of me.(然而,每天站在厨房窗户前的同一个地方洗碗,让我重新找回了一些。我的脑海中闪现出厨房窗外院子里不断变化的景色,并思考着我面前这片宇宙中时间的流逝)”可知,从最后两段中可以了解到作者对自然之美变得更加敏感。

In space, astronauts have to learn to live without gravity — whether they’re aboard the International Space Station (ISS) or on a journey to the moon. While space adventurers do experience microgravity conditions beyond Earth, that gravitational influence is so minimal that you can think of it as a virtually weightless environment. But while floating around might sound fun, even simple tasks like holding an object can pose unique challenges. So, scientists have wondered, how does the brain adapt to this kind of lifestyle?
In a new study, researchers from the Université catholique de Louvain and Ikerbasque, the Basque Foundation for Science, explored how astronauts’ brains adapt to weightlessness. The team studied changes in how astronauts grip objects when going from Earth to space and then back to Earth again.
The results were a little stranger than you might expect, and could have serious consequences for future astronaut safety. “What we observed was totally unexpected,” lead author Philippe Lefèvre, a Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Université catholique de Louvain, told Space.com.
The researchers found that months after returning to Earth from space, astronauts had trouble exerting the correct amount of force to properly grip an object. In fact, their brains were so used to gripping weightless objects in space that it took them months back on Earth to readjust. Similarly, the team also found that, while in space, astronauts actually applied more force than necessary to grip objects because their brains still expected the presence of gravity.
Essentially, both during a mission in space and after returning to Earth, astronauts “misinterpret sensory feedback,” Lefèvre said. Living on Earth with the force of gravity, we know that if we let go of an object, both inertia (惯性) and the weight of the object (a combination of mass and gravity) will cause it to fall. In space, only inertia causes objects to move. For instance, simply letting go of an object won’t make it fall, but tapping down on it would have the same visual effect because you’ve added a manual force, but while we might know this intellectually, it turns out that it takes some time for our brains to catch up to our gravity (or gravity-less surroundings).
28.What situation do space travelers experience in the universe?
A.They are faced with the completely gravity-free space.
B.The microgravity conditions beyond Earth are minimal.
C.They had difficulty using the proper amount of force.
D.They are floating in an unreal weightless environment.
29.Why did astronauts in space apply more force than necessary to grip objects?
A.Because objects in space become heavier due to microgravity.
B.Because their brains still expected gravity to be present.
C.Because they were not familiar with the effect of inertia.
D.Because sensory feedback was amplified in space.
30.What aspect is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?
A.Cause and effect B.Comparison and contrast
C.Example and citing D.Highlight and focus
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Astronauts Learn to Hold Objects in a Weightless Environment
B.Astronauts Face Grip Strength Challenge in Space and on Earth
C.Why Astronauts Use Wrong Grip Force in Space and on Earth
D.The Physics of Inertia and Gravity in Space Confuses Astronauts
根据原文第一段“While space adventurers do experience microgravity conditions beyond Earth, that gravitational influence is so minimal that you can think of it as a virtually weightless environment.(太空旅行者在地球之外确实处于微重力环境,这种引力影响极小,可以看作近乎失重状态。)”
根据原文第四段“Similarly, the team also found that, while in space, astronauts actually applied more force than necessary to grip objects because their brains still expected the presence of gravity.(研究团队还发现,宇航员在太空中抓握物品时会用多余的力气,因为他们的大脑仍默认重力依然存在。)”
根据原文最后一段“Living on Earth with the force of gravity, we know that if we let go of an object, both inertia and the weight of the object (a combination of mass and gravity) will cause it to fall. In space, only inertia causes objects to move.(在地球上受重力作用,我们都知道:如果松开一个物体,惯性以及物体自身的重量(质量与重力共同作用的结果)会让它下落。而在太空中,只有惯性会使物体发生运动。)” 可知,本段把地球有重力和太空无重力两种情况进行对比对照。
31.主旨大意题。根据第一段“But while floating around might sound fun, even simple tasks like holding an object can pose unique challenges.(虽然四处漂浮听起来很有趣,但哪怕是抓握物品这类简单的任务,也会带来独特的挑战。)”及第二段“The team studied changes in how astronauts grip objects when going from Earth to space and then back to Earth again.(研究团队研究了宇航员从地球进入太空、再重返地球的过程中,抓握物体方式所发生的变化。)”
D
For years, researchers have pointed to a potential upside of Antarctic melting: as glaciers melt, iron trapped in the ice would be released into the ocean, fueling algae (海藻) blooms that absorb carbon dioxide. This process, known as iron fertilization, was seen as a rare positive feedback in a warming world.
However, new research from Rutgers University challenges that assumption. In the most precise measurement to date, scientists found that melt-water from an Antarctic ice shelf contributes far less iron to the surrounding ocean than previously believed. The study, published in Communications Earth and Environment, raises questions about current climate models.
The Southern Ocean supports abundant phytoplankton (浮游植物) growth, which forms the foundation of the Antarctic food web. These microscopic plants feed krill, which sustain penguins, seals, and whales. As they grow, phytoplankton absorb massive amounts of carbon dioxide, making this region the world’s largest oceanic carbon sink.
Until now, scientists’ understanding of iron sources came mainly from computer models. In 2022, researchers traveled aboard an icebreaker to West Antarctica’s Dotson Ice Shelf to collect direct measurements. They sampled seawater at points where it flows into and out of cavities beneath the ice shelf.
Back in the lab, scientists measured iron concentrations and analyzed isotopic (同位素的) ratios to trace the iron’s origin. The results were unexpected. Melt-water accounted for only about 10% of the dissolved iron flowing out of the ice cavity (洞). The majority came from deep ocean water (62%) and sediments on the continental shelf (28%).
“Roughly 90% of the dissolved iron coming out of the ice shelf cavity comes from deep waters and sediments outside the cavity, not from melt-water,” said lead author Venkatesh Chinni.
The isotopic data also pointed to processes beneath the glacier itself. A liquid melt-water layer lacking dissolved oxygen appears to help dissolve iron oxides in bedrock, potentially releasing more iron than melting ice shelves do.
The findings challenge long-held assumptions about iron sources in the Southern Ocean as the planet warms. “Our claim is that the melt-water itself carries very little iron,” said principal investigator Rob Sherrell. He noted that most iron comes from bedrock erosion, not from the ice driving sea level rise, a conclusion many scientists may find surprising.
32.What assumption does the new research challenge?
A.Melt-water releases large amounts of iron. B.Iron in ocean helps slow warming.
C.Antarctic melting matters for climate. D.Algae blooms absorb large amounts of CO₂.
33.Why do scientists focus on iron levels in the Southern Ocean?
A.Because iron is a nutrient.
B.Because iron is vital for plant and animal growth.
C.Because iron levels affect climate model accuracy.
D.Because iron supports carbon-absorbing phytoplankton.
34.What did the new study find about the source of iron in the Southern Ocean?
A.Deep ocean water is not the main iron source. B.Sediments contribute less iron than melt-water.
C.Melt-water plays a minor role in iron supply. D.The ice itself releases more iron than expected.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Iron’s Importance to Ocean’s Carbon Sink B.Study: Antarctic Iron Comes from Elsewhere
C.Iron’s Role in Southern Ocean Ecosystem D.Iron Data: Key to Climate Models
【答案】32.A 33.D 34.C 35.B
根据第一段“For years, researchers have pointed to a potential upside of Antarctic melting: as glaciers melt, iron trapped in the ice would be released into the ocean, fueling algae (海藻) blooms that absorb carbon dioxide.(多年来,研究人员一直指出南极冰川融化可能带来的一个积极影响:随着冰川融化,冰层中所含的铁会释放到海洋中,从而促进藻类的大量繁殖,而藻类能够吸收二氧化碳)”以及第二段“However, new research from Rutgers University challenges that assumption. In the most precise measurement to date, scientists found that melt-water from an Antarctic ice shelf contributes far less iron to the surrounding ocean than previously believed. The study, published in Communications Earth and Environment, raises questions about current climate models.(然而,罗格斯大学的新研究对这一假设提出了质疑。在迄今为止最为精确的测量中,科学家们发现,来自南极冰架的融水向周围海洋输送的铁元素量远低于此前的预期。该研究发表在《地球与环境通讯》杂志上,引发了对当前气候模型的质疑)”可知,它挑战的核心假设是“融水是铁的主要来源”或者“融水会大量释放铁”这一论断。故选A。
根据第三段“The Southern Ocean supports abundant phytoplankton (浮游植物) growth, which forms the foundation of the Antarctic food web. These microscopic plants feed krill, which sustain penguins, seals, and whales. As they grow, phytoplankton absorb massive amounts of carbon dioxide, making this region the world’s largest oceanic carbon sink.(南冰洋为大量的浮游植物提供了适宜的生长环境,这些浮游植物构成了南极食物网的基础。这些微小的植物为磷虾提供食物,而磷虾又为企鹅、海豹和鲸鱼提供营养来源。随着它们的生长,浮游植物会吸收大量的二氧化碳,使得该地区成为世界上最大的海洋碳汇)”可知,科学家关注南冰洋中的铁含量是因为铁能为能够吸收碳的浮游植物提供养分。故选D。
34.细节理解题。根据第五段“Melt-water accounted for only about 10% of the dissolved iron flowing out of the ice cavity (洞).(融水所携带的铁元素仅占从冰洞中流出的铁元素总量的约10%)”和第六段““Roughly 90% of the dissolved iron coming out of the ice shelf cavity comes from deep waters and sediments outside the cavity, not from melt-water,” said lead author Venkatesh Chinni.(该研究的第一作者文卡特什·钦尼表示:“从冰架空洞中流出的溶解铁物质中,约90%来自空洞外部的深层海水和沉积物,而非来自融水。”)”

E-waste (also known as waste electrical and electronic equipment or WEEE) is the world’s fastest-growing waste stream. 36 An estimated 50 million tons of e-waste is produced globally every year, weighing more than all of the commercial airliners ever made. But only 20% of that is formally recycled, and most gets thrown away or sent to landfill or burnt.
However, many people are unaware that waste electronics can hold significant quantities of valuable materials. 37 Like all critical raw materials, gold is a finite resource, yet 7% of the world’s gold is currently sitting in disused electronics. Traditional gold extraction (提取) from e-waste usually involves exporting devices to other countries, where e-waste is smelted down at extremely high temperatures in a carbon-intensive process. 38
Chemist Hayley Messenger and her team, working with Canadian company Excir, have invented and patented a new green technology to extract gold at room temperature. It can recover 99% of gold from the printed circuit boards in old laptops and mobile phones. 39 The chemical solution can be reused up to 20 times, making the process efficient, clean and low-carbon.
40 Besides, further innovation is also needed to make e-waste recycling mainstream, especially for small electrical goods like chargers and cables. With more research and investment, these green technologies can help build a more circular economy for precious metals and reduce the environmental harm caused by traditional mining.
A.Gold is one of the precious materials in e-waste.
B.Its huge output and poor handling trouble the world.
C.E-waste production rises with electronic product upgrades.
D.So there is a pressing need for developing much greener methods.
E.The breakthrough method is both highly efficient and eco-friendly.
F.They want to recover as much of the precious metal as they can.
G.Green tech is the key to building a sustainable circular economy for metals.

Early in the morning, an active and lively scene unfolds in every corner of China. Eva Molaro, 56 Italian media professional, stretches along with a group of early risers to welcome the new day. At a busy airport shop, Kazakh airline representative Igor Marchuk pays conveniently with his phone. Downstairs in a neighborhood courtyard, French entrepreneur Sua parks her bike and, smiling, 57 (answer) a neighbor’s greeting in Chinese: “Chi guo la (I’ve eaten)!”
Recently, the hashtags (话题标签) “Very Chinese Time” and “Becoming Chinese” have gone viral online, inspiring more foreigners to imitate daily Chinese habits with great enthusiasm. Instead of just 58 (sample) a short “Chinese experience”, they choose to settle in China and truly appreciate the Chinese lifestyle.
59 spreads globally is not China in its full 60 (complex), but daily bits. Molaro’s most cherished “China moments” are hidden in simple daily details: a cup of hot water and morning exercise. She has lived in China for nearly two decades, developing a deep affection for simple 61 (comfort) like hot water and traditional Chinese medicine. She has also taken to outdoor exercise, joining her Chinese neighbors 62 singing and dancing in public squares, and drawing inspiration from the 63 (remark) vitality of Chinese seniors. She sincerely expects to be just like them in her later years, full of passion, 64 (engage) in the community and open to dialogue.
With more people experiencing the rhythms of daily life, China’s charm is 65 (steady) gaining worldwide recognition.

comfort此处表示“令人舒适的事物”,为可数名词,结合like hot water and traditional Chinese medicine可知,此处用复数形式comforts。
join sb. in doing sth.

A “Growing” Problem on Campus
Our school’s labor practice base has long been left idle. The fields are overgrown with weeds, and the facilities there are rarely used. It is such a good resource that it’s a real pity to let it go to waste.
To make full use of the base, I have some suggestions. First, let classes take charge of different areas to grow vegetables and flowers. Second, organize regular labor activities for students to learn farming skills. Besides, we can hold planting competitions to raise students’ interest.
I hope the base can serve us well and help develop our spirit of labor.

Alex is a teenager volunteering at the “Silver Harmony” retirement home. Among the residents, Mrs. Jane, now in her late eighties, holds a special place in the volunteers’ hearts. Every month, they organize a collective birthday party, a cherished tradition that fills the recreation room with anticipation and joy. The residents, especially Jane, would often talk about it weeks in advance, their eyes shining with excitement for the upcoming celebration.
Unfortunately, just before last month’s party, Jane had a bad fall. Her birthday passed while she was in the hospital. During the volunteers’ visit, she seemed physically better but sad and lost. “I missed the party, didn’t I?” she sighed, staring out the window. “No cake, no silly hat… just these white walls. This was my worst birthday ever.” Her words, full of loneliness, strengthened their resolve to do something special.
When Jane finally returned to Silver Harmony, a subtle sadness lingered in her smile. In the common room, she noticed other residents enjoying their gifts from the recent party. Some were sipping tea from new floral mugs, and others were reading books they had received or admiring new scarves in the mirror. Her eyes followed them, a quiet, longing look flashing across her face, though she quickly turned away. Alex watched from across the room, her unspoken sadness pulling at his heart.
Secretly, the volunteers sprang into action. They booked the recreation room for a private evening, worked with kind nurses for help, and invited a few of Jane’s closest friends among the residents. They ordered a birthday cake, gathered decorations, and pooled their money to buy a set of fine wool for her knitting, knowing it was her favorite hobby. Everything was prepared, step by careful step.
On the chosen day, Jane sat in her usual armchair by the window, seemingly lost in thought. She watched other residents chat and laugh over a board game, her hands resting quietly in her lap. The contrast between the lively room and her being alone was striking. Seeing his chance, Alex walked over and offered a smile. “Jane, could you come with me for a moment? There’s something I’d like to show you in the recreation room.”

After the celebration, Alex helped a tired but smiling Jane back to her room.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“Why are we going there?” Jane asked, looking confused. Alex guided her down the quiet hallway. “The party was weeks ago,” she murmured. Just then, he pushed the door open. The room was dark for a second before the soft light from a candle-lit cake lit up twenty smiling faces — volunteers, nurses, her friends — all waiting. A chorus of “Surprise! Happy Birthday, Jane!” filled the air. Her hands flew to her mouth, and tears immediately filled her astonished eyes.
After the celebration, Alex helped a tired but smiling Jane back to her room. Jane squeezed his hand. “You young people… you turned my worst day into my best memory,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. The simple party, planned after seeing her disappointment and carried out in secret, had done more than they hoped. It wasn’t about the gifts or the cake, but about fixing a missed moment with kindness right now, showing that even later in life, no one is ever truly forgotten.

But what can I do now? I can cancel the card until next year. Let me go through the terms carefully. Well, IT seems there is hope. IT says here that since you are a student, they will cancel the card with no charge if you provide three reasons why you no longer once the credit card, along with a letter from your parents. Listen to the next question. Hello, are you the person to ask about joining a club? I am. What would you like to know? Well, i'm interested in several things, but i'd like to know more about the different clubs and how much they cost. I'm looking for a club that's not too expensive or big OK. Have a look at the table. You can see the names of the clubs, the costs and the number of members. I'm afraid they are in any order. If you look at the top of the list, the first club . is table tennis. Oh, right. IT costs thirty dollars. That's quite expensive. Yes, IT is a bit expensive. The cross country cycling club is cheaper though. Membership fees are only fifteen dollars, but on the other hand, it's got one hundred members. The film club costs a lot, doesn't IT? Yes, fifty dollars is a lot. Is there any other club you think looks interesting? Look at the next one. Street dance is the cheapest. only five dollars. That's great. It's to my taste.

Paragraph 1:
“Why are we going there?” Jane asked, looking confused. Alex guided her down the quiet hallway. “The party was weeks ago,” she murmured. Just then, he pushed the door open. The room was dark for a second before the soft light from a candle-lit cake lit up twenty smiling faces — volunteers, nurses, her friends — all waiting. A chorus of “Surprise! Happy Birthday, Jane!” filled the air. Her hands flew to her mouth, and tears immediately filled her astonished eyes.
Paragraph 2:
After the celebration, Alex helped a tired but smiling Jane back to her room. Jane squeezed his hand. “You young people… you turned my worst day into my best memory,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. The simple party, planned after seeing her disappointment and carried out in secret, had done more than they hoped. It wasn’t about the gifts or the cake, but about fixing a missed moment with kindness right now, showing that even later in life, no one is ever truly forgotten.
