(25-26九年级上·新疆昌吉·期末)I’m Henry. Four weeks ago, I went to Antarctica (南极洲) with nineteen other students. I decided to take the trip after seeing a program about how Antarctica was affected (影响) by climate (气候) change. I thought it’d be a great way to see its effects on Antarctica directly.
I was surprised by how little life there was in Antarctica. Documentaries show lands covered in penguins (企鹅) and seas full of whales, but of course, the film-makers stay there for months to film so many. I saw some, but not in the numbers I’d expected.
In our first group meeting, we all shared why we’d taken the trip. There were twenty students in total and twenty different explanations. Even though we were all a bit shy, we made friends with each other from day one. You often get a few people in a group who like telling the others what to do. Luckily, this wasn’t the case with us. Because we wanted to share messages, we set up an online group. It was nice, as we became pretty close.
I’ve become much more serious about helping the environment after learning more about the effects brought by climate change in Antarctica. I can also understand why people do things that harm the environment, as I’ve done them all myself. It’s not about blaming (责备) anyone but about changing people’s habits. We should try to live a low-carbon life (低碳生活).

Passage 5
(25-26九年级上·新疆省直辖县级单位·期末)People use color expressions to show their feelings and describe the world. Many color-related phrases are common in our speech. Let’s see where they came from.
●The Blues
The phrase is a short form of “the blue devils (魔鬼)”, which also stands for (代表) sad feelings. This expression is also used to describe a type of jazz music that became popular in the south of America in the 1940s.
●Black Sheep of the Family
The phrase refers to a member of a family or a group who is unacceptable. In the old days, the black sheep were sold at a lower price than the white ones at the market, because their fleece (羊毛) could not be colored. This made the black sheep an unwelcome member of the group.
●A Red-letter Day
A Red-letter Day is a day when something really exciting and memorable (难忘的) happens. It came from the practice of marking special western days, holidays, or other festivals in red on the calendar. Today, some calendars still use red numbers for special holidays, even weekends.
●Green with Envy (羡慕, 嫉妒)
Writers such as Shakespeare in the 16th century used the color green to stand for envy, but it was the Greeks (希腊人) who connected it with sickness caused by envy. When a person was full of envy, his or her body produced too much bile (胆汁), giving his or her skin a greenish color. That is green with envy.
阅读以上信息,用恰当的单词完成下面的短文,每空一词。
1.People use colors to express their feelings and describe the world. Many color-related phrases are in our speech. For example, the Blues not only represents feelings but also refers to a type of popular jazz music. The expression Black Sheep of the Family means an unwelcome member of a family or a group. In the days, it was impossible to color the fleece of the black sheep, so the black sheep were at a lower price than the white ones at the market. A Red-letter Day came from the practice of marking a day in red on the calendar when that day needs remembering. Green with Envy appeared because the Greeks believed that the color green had to do with sickness caused by envy. Later writers began to use green for envy.

Julia is ten years old and she has a nine-month-old puppy (幼犬) Walter. Both of them have been deaf since birth, and now Julia is training Walter with sign language.
Julia’s family saved Walter from the SPCA in California. “When I first held Julia, she couldn’t hear my voice, she smelt my neck. And when I met Walter, he did almost exactly the same thing as Julia. I remember looking at him and I just knew he was meant to be ours,” Julia’s mother said.
Julia has taught Walter different sign language commands—such as “sit”, as well as the signs for “food” and “water”. The two are always together. Julia’s mother notes that Walter waits for Julia to finish her homework so they can play in the backyard together. “She’s learned a whole other kind of love,” said Julia’s mother. “I think they were both meant to find each other.”
Now Julia and Walter are inseparable (形影不离的). Every morning, they greet each other with warm hugs. When Julia practices sign language, Walter watches carefully and follows the signs quickly. They run in the park and share snacks happily. Julia says, “Walter is my ears and my heart.” Their story tells us that true friendship can connect hearts, no matter what challenges we face.

Passage 4
