Army ants are some of the most cooperative animals on Earth. They live in huge groups with millions of ants working together. Unlike other ants, these smart army ants do not build long-lasting nests (巢穴). Instead, they link (连接) their own bodies tightly to form a living, ball-shaped nest. They move from place to place, hunting for food.
When army ants hunt, they work as a team. They form long lines of thousands of ants. These lines spread across the forest ground. The ants at the front find food like insects and small animals. Then they try to tell other ants. Soon, hundreds of ants attack together. With their teamwork, they can kill living things much larger than themselves.
Army ants also cooperate to care for their young. The queen ant lays eggs. Worker ants carry the eggs and baby ants to safe places. Some ants feed the babies. Others protect them from danger. Every ant has a job.
The most amazing example of army ants’ teamwork is their living bridges. When they need to cross a small river, the ants link their bodies together. They form a firm bridge. Other ants walk across safely. This selfless cooperation helps them survive.
Scientists study army ants to learn about teamwork. They show us how working together can help a group achieve great things. For army ants, teamwork is not just a choice-it is a way of life.
4. What do the ants at the front do when they hunt?
A. They build small homes for the group.
B. They find food and let other ants know.
C. They carry the eggs and baby ants home.
D. They protect the queen from danger.
5. Which picture shows the most amazing teamwork of army ants?

Last year, I started doing some volunteer work for a charity in my town that helped disabled children. I found that they needed new wheelchairs (轮椅), but they really didn’t have the money. So I began to think about how to raise money, hoping it would also be a good chance to push myself and grow.
When I told my friends about it, they joked, “Amy, why don’t you run the London Marathon?!” We all laughed — I was never into sports and had never run seriously before. I felt nervous and had no idea if I could make it. But I decided to give it a go.
I talked to the charity, and they agreed to sign me up. I began to run every night, and after about a month, I could finish nearly 10 kilometers. The problem, though, was that the marathon is 42 kilometers!
With only five months left until the race, I practised harder than ever and worked my way up to 31 kilometers. I had to finish it — if I did, my sponsors (赞助者) would give enough money to buy new wheelchairs for the kids.
On race day, I wasn’t sure if I was ready. Luckily, the weather was cool, and other runners helped me a lot. After about 36 kilometers, I was completely weary. I was out of breath, and my legs felt so heavy. I almost gave up, but the cheers from the crowd kept me going, and I finally made it to the finishing line with a time of five hours and ten minutes.
I felt incredibly proud of myself. I didn’t become a professional (专业的) runner, but I faced my fear and saw it through. I never realized I could keep trying this hard. In the end, I not only helped the charity get the wheelchairs they needed, but also discovered a stronger and more confident part of myself along the way.
7. Why did the writer run the London Marathon?
A. To be a great marathon runner.
B. To raise money for disabled children.
C. To make friends with other runners.
D. To get a new wheelchair for herself.
8. Which is the correct order of the writer’s experience?
① She reached the finishing line and felt really proud of herself.
② She did some volunteer work for a charity in her town.
③ She kept running every night and made progress in months.
④ She felt nervous and didn’t know if she could make it.
A. ②④③① B. ②③④① C. ③②④① D. ③①②④
9. What does the underlined word “weary” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Tired. B. Bored. C. Lonely. D. Afraid.
10. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce different ways to raise money for a charity.
B. To advise us to develop running as a hobby in daily life.
C. To encourage us to challenge ourselves and grow better.
D. To explain why people need to help disabled children.
【答案】7. B 8. A 9. A 10. C

A. B.
C. D.
6. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Army Ants: Smart Animals in Nature B. Army Ants: Dangerous Hunters
C. Army Ants: Great Bridge Builders D. Army Ants: Nature’s Super Team
C
