M: Well, it always snows in winter here. But this year, it has snowed much more.
W: Why is that?
M: I'm not sure. The summer was also much hotter than usual, and it rained more often in the spring than normal. Maybe it's global warming.
W: Well, should we go somewhere indoors?
M: Yeah, we could go to the Museum of Modern Art.
W: We went to a museum yesterday. What about a movie?
M: There is nothing I want to see right now. Hey, let's go to Times Square. There's an amazing toy store that I want to show you. Every visitor loves it!

W: I will... Gosh! What's it called?
M: Bed Monsters.
W: Sounds scary!
M: It is! It's about things that really scare us at night.
W: Ah! You must be really excited.
M: I am. I've been working on this for over three years. I did 27 of the drawings in the book myself, too.
W: 27—How many are there in total?
M: 125.
W: That's a lot of drawings! There can't be much room left for writing—maybe 200 pages?
M: No. At first, I wanted it to be 800 pages long, but then we decided to shorten it; now it's 400 in total.

(Text 9)
M: Excuse me. I'd like some information about the trains to Chicago.

W: There's a train at 9:00. It'll get you there at 1:00 p.m., but there are many stops along the way.
M: Are there any nonstop trains to Chicago?
W: Yes, there is one at 10:00. That arrives at 12:00.
M: I think this train is better. What's the fare?
W: Do you want to buy a single ticket or a round one?
M: What's the difference?
W: A round ticket saves you about 20 percent of the fare. Do you prefer a first-class ticket or a second-class one?
M: A second-class one please. How much is a second-class ticket for a round trip?
W: Fifty-five dollars.
M: Can I buy my ticket here?
W: No, Sir. You have to get your ticket at the booking office outside this door on the right.
M: Thanks.
(Text 10)
Attention, everyone! Please pause your conversations for an announcement about what to do during bad weather! Safety is our first concern, especially in winter. Recently, it's supposed to get very cold—about −10℃ tonight, and −15℃ tomorrow morning. What's worse, it will be even farther down to −20℃ by tomorrow evening.
Please make sure you come to school with enough clothes to keep you warm, and you should also have a pair of boots you can change into. Highland Public School District officials will consider travel conditions before making a decision about whether to cancel school. If school is closed because of winter weather or another reason, an announcement will be made by 6:00 a.m. on that day by local radio stations and television stations. We may need to inform your parents by phone as well, so if your parents' phone numbers have changed, please tell the school. Let's make sure we all have a happy and safe winter!
Thank you for your attention.

参考范文:
Dear fellow students,
As is known to all, it is healthy living habits that really matter in our study and daily life. Therefore, I appeal to everyone to stay away from phone addiction and develop regular and healthy living habits.
First, we should strictly limit the time spent on mobile phones, avoiding meaningless phone use during study and rest time and focusing more on our lessons and real-life communication. Besides, it is necessary to keep early hours—going to bed before 11 o’clock and getting up on time instead of staying up late browsing phones. Additionally, taking more outdoor exercise after class can not only help us keep energetic but also distract us from mobile phones.
Let’s take immediate action to get rid of phone addiction and develop good living habits.

参考范文:
Mary was confused about what to do. She knew that she was being cheated by Smith. She thought for a while and then a good idea came into her mind. She reached her hand into the bag and drew out a piece. Without looking or showing it to anyone, she fumbled and let it fall onto the chessboard covered with pieces, where it got lost among the other pieces. “Oh, I am sorry, how clumsy of me,” she said. “But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, we will know which piece I picked.”
Smith dared not admit his dishonesty in front of the villagers. The black chess piece in the bag proved without a shadow of a doubt that the girl had chosen the white one. She did not have to marry the old and greedy Smith and her father’s debt should also be forgiven. Because the villagers were there to witness the whole event, Smith had to keep his word as well as he had promised.

Leafy green vegetables are a great way to improve your health as they possess many vital nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Spinach
Spinach is easy to get all year round. It is a good source of antioxidants, which can reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease and certain cancers. It’s best eaten uncooked, as part of a salad, as cooking tends to destroy the naturally occurring nutrients in the leaves.

Romaine lettuce
Romaine lettuce is a good source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, K, C and folate (叶酸). India has about 18 million poor children. Their conditions on the streets are worse than those shown in the film Slumdog Millionaire. Many of them rely on international charity projects like Baal Dan. Baal Dan was started in 2005 by a young woman, Tanya Pinto, from Dallas, Texas, who was born in India but grew up elsewhere.
In India, Tanya Pinto spends time with poor children, giving them food, schoolbooks and, above all, hope, through her project called Baal Dan.
Tanya was working in an advertising company in Dallas when she decided to visit India. “I decided to take a holiday from my busy job in advertising and I took three months off,” said Tanya. “I went to an orphanage (孤儿院) in India and I also traveled around a little and that experience was life-changing. That was why I decided to start a charity.”
Tanya started her project in 2005 with small donations (捐赠物) from friends and co-workers. Thanks to these small donations, she has been able to feed children, support orphanages and support some children’s education. Tanya says she enjoys playing with the children and talking to them. “I will take them to the zoo or to the park,” she explained. “I will do things that are really fun activities, because these are children who are living in poverty. So I like to bring some fun into their lives.”
Tanya Pinto started small, with donations of clothes or underwear. But with the help of donors, she is full of hope. This year she hopes to build a school.
Tanya said even ordinary people like her could have a great influence on the lives of poor children. “Even if you are not rich or not famous, you can do something to help make this world a better place,” she said.

Every Monday through Friday, you may be running between work, appointments and family events — can’t the workout wait until the weekend? Maybe, according to a report published in a journal, which found that people who exercised throughout the week and “weekend warriors” who packed their exercise into the weekend, saw a similar reduction in the risk of heart diseases.
The paper relied on data from the UK Biobank, a large biomedical database that follows residents in the long term. “A group of more than 1,000,000 people used accelerometers (加速度计) to track their movement over the course of a week,” the study said. Researchers then assessed the relationship between exercise patterns and events of the heart.
Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity (中等强度) physical activity per week, according to the guideline. “If you are able to achieve those guideline-recommended levels over one to two days of the week, then our findings show you’re getting a similar benefit as people who exercise every day,” said lead study author Dr Shaan Khurshid, instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Dr Andrew Freeman from National Jewish Health in Denver, who was not part of the research, often recommends his patients to exercise every day, encouraging them to engage in 30-minute exercise that’s hard enough to make them breathless. Still, there are patients who tell Freeman that they can only get a day or two of activity during the week but have more time on the weekend. Now the study gives him more confidence in helping them make that work.
“This is at least inspiring enough for me to say to some patients, ‘Hey, there’s data that says if you can’t get your 30 minutes every day, getting 150 minutes over a weekend might be helpful,’” said Freeman.
28. What is the main finding of the research?
A. Exercising on weekends is more beneficial.
B. Most people prefer to exercise on weekdays.
C. Regular daily exercise is essential for heart health.
D. Weekend exercise has benefits similar to daily exercise.
29. How did the researchers get their findings?
A. By observing people’s exercise habits.
B. By conducting interviews with patients.
C. By reviewing residents’ medical records.
D. By analysing data from wearable devices.
30. How long is the recommended weekly duration for moderate-intensity exercise for adults?
A. At least 30 minutes.
B. At least 90 minutes.
C. At least 150 minutes.
D. At least 180 minutes.
31. What is Dr Andrew Freeman’s attitude towards the study?
A. Positive.
B. Opposed.
C. Critical.
D. Indifferent.
D
There are a few types of people who work part-time, like people who have retired and want a bit more income, parents who want to spend more time with their children, college students and temporary agency workers. Many people enjoy the advantages of not working full-time, but one major disadvantage is that benefits are rarely offered to part-time employees.
Most people hope for health insurance and retirement benefits when taking a job. Traditionally, companies only offer benefits to employees who work 30 hours or more a week. This is only a 25% reduction in hours, so it doesn’t free up a lot of time for the employee who needs part-time hours. Even when part-timers are offered health benefits, they are rarely offered paid time off and retirement benefits.
Many businesses hire part-time employees for the simple reason of saving money. If the employees work less than a certain number of hours, they don’t need to pay for benefits. There are companies, however, that are beginning to offer benefits to part-time employees. Some companies have begun to offer those in order to keep high-quality, trained professionals that just want part-time hours. People who may only want part-time work may be forced to take a full-time job to get the benefits. Companies who offer benefits to part-timers have an advantage of offering more choices to their employees in terms of hours.
Conducting an Internet search is probably the quickest way to find companies that provide benefits for part-time employees. Many large corporations like Starbucks, Barnes and Noble and Whole Foods offer benefits to part-time employees among other things. Look for companies that offer a team approach to their employees. Employees are given choices and part of decision making in the business. Businesses that allow employee input are more likely to offer benefits to part-timers.
32. Which of the following groups is NOT mentioned as people who would love to be part-timers?
A. Retired people who want to make some money.
B. Agency workers who want to work temporarily.
C. Parents who want to get together with their children more.
D. People who prefer to spend more time on their hobbies.
33. We can learn from the second paragraph that ______.
A. part-timers can enjoy as many benefits as full-timers
B. people choose to work because they need insurance
C. most part-time workers have paid time off
D. part-timers often enjoy fewer benefits than full-timers
34. Why have some companies begun to give benefits to part-time workers?
A. Because the government forces them to do so.
B. Because they want to attract and keep skilled workers.
C. Because they want to show their concern for part-time workers.
D. Because part-time workers won’t work for them without benefits.
35. Why does the writer refer to companies like Starbucks?
A. Because Starbucks is a world-famous coffee company.
B. Because these companies advertise more on the Internet.
C. Because these companies give part-time workers benefits.
D. Because these companies need more part-time workers.

第二节(满分 25 分)

A village farmer named Tom was going through some major challenges of his family. He had to take a loan from a moneylender of his village, whose name was Smith. Smith was old, greedy and unmarried and fancied marrying Tom's beautiful daughter, Mary. One day Tom went to Smith to ask him for some more time to repay the loan. Smith pretended to be angry for a while and then proposed a bargain. He said that if Tom did not repay his debt, he would be punished or he had an option to let Smith marry Mary and all his debt would be forgiven.
Both Tom and Mary were shocked by the proposal. But there was no way Tom could pay back the money soon and he did not want his beautiful daughter to marry the old and cruel Smith.
The cunning (狡猾的) Smith suggested that they leave it to chance. In an attempt to persuade Tom to accept his deal, Smith made an attractive condition in deciding the fate of the father and daughter. He would keep a black chess piece and a white one in a bag. Mary then had to choose a piece which would decide her fate. If she picked the black piece, she would have to marry Smith and her father's debt would be forgiven. If she picked the white piece, she did not need to marry Smith and her father's debt would still be forgiven. If she refused to pick the chess piece, Tom would be thrown into prison.
They were standing before a chessboard covered with black and white pieces. Smith even called the nearby villagers to witness the event, so that no party could walk away from their word. Smith bent over, picked two pieces and kept them in a bag. The sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked two black pieces instead of a black one and a white one. Smith then asked the girl to pick a piece from the bag.
