Dear Mum,
To save sick people in the hospital, you and Dad have to work from home. You must be very tired. I know I can do something to help give you both a break. I can do housework and you can pay me! Every day, I can sweep the floor, lay the table and walk the dog — each for $1.
This plan can let you and Dad relax. It can help me too. I can learn to manage (管理) my time and money better. So what do you think? I’m ready to start right now!
Gabby
Dear Gabby,
You’re old enough to start doing housework. But Dad and I may not pay you. No one pays us to do housework. Housework are part of family life, and we all need to help keep our house clean and tidy. Sometimes we do jobs not for a reward (回报), but because it’s our duty to do so.
You can get a reward for doing housework — smiles from both your dad and me.
Love,
Mum

Is there love between my parents? Sometimes I really want to know that. Every day they are very busy trying to make money for my schooling.
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (缝被子). I quietly sat beside her.
“Mum, is there love between you and Dad?” I asked in a very low voice.
With surprise in her eyes, she stopped her work for a while. Then she said, “Susan, look at this thread (线). We can hardly see it, but it’s really there. It makes the quilt strong. If life is a quilt, love should be a thread. Love is inside.”
I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month.
After they were back, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the road every day. They were so kind to each other and it seemed they loved each other so much.
After two months my father still couldn’t walk by himself.
“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Susan, don’t worry about me,” he said. “I just like walking with your mum. I like this kind of life.” Reading his eyes, I knew his deep love for my mother.
Now I understand that love is just like a thread in the quilt. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.
